I have a 7 week old baby and I think I am suffering from post-partum depression. My OB is willing to prescribe meds, but I am interested in seeing someone who specializes in this area.

What can I do next?

We have one of the national experts here in Chicago - Dr. Laura Miller at UIC. She is fabulous and very understanding and knowledgeable on this topic. Her contact info is:

Hi D.,

I'm so sorry that you're having to deal with this. I suffered too and coicidentally started seeing a natural doctor for an unrelated issue. He asked me about PPD (since I had a wee one with me) and I confessed that I was struggling. He was probably the first one I admitted it to. Anyway, he told me how the little ones sap us of all of our Omega 3s and the first sign is PPD. He got me on a fish oil, Carlson's from any healthfood store, and within a few days I felt so much better! I still take it now that both of mine are in pre-shcool.

Good luck to you!

Hi D. ,

Your already on the road to recovery asking for help . I also have ppd very mild but never the less its still ppd . I never had this with my other 2 children but for some reason got it with my daughter . I havent seen anyone yet , but my ob and gp gve me meds and that has help , but what i found is that with the right support from family and getting out and doing things for myself (like walking, working out ) also has help .

I wish you the best of luck and remember your not alone . Please feel free to contact me if you need a friend .

Dr Fatima Ali and Dr Syed Ali have a shared practice in Wheaton. They specialize in patients with depression etc.
They are fabulous and can also provide referrals to specialists in talk therapy. Depression typically gets treated by both medication and followup visits to monitor how the treatment is going and talk therapy appointments both with the psychiatrist and the talk therapy expert.

Congratulations on being a Mom and I hope you get speedy help!
Please know that exercise (when it is okay with your obgyn to resume) can also help in the battle with depression.
I am a yoga teacher and others have had success with other types of exercise because the endorphins from having exercise act in a positive way on the brain.
Please understand that I am showing you multiple things that will help you. Please do write back and tell mamasource that you take steps to get help for yourself!

D., bless your heart. PPD is very difficult and the timing is really bad. I hope you get the help you need. Please look at the webpage for the Illinois Post Partum Depression alliance. there are specialists there including psychiatrists:
http://www.ppdil.org/ppdhelp.htm

I am a therapist on the panel, and although I don't see Valerie Davis Raskin on the panel, she is known as the go to psychiatrist for questions on reproductive issues and depression. She has 2 books out on the subject, and I think she trained Dr Miller, already mentioned.
She has a small private pay practice in River Forest. When I have clients with PPD or any depression in the reproductive years I try to get them into see her first.
That being said, I agree Dr Miller is good, and I also hear Dr Ann Sarpy in Oak Park is good.
I strongly suggest you also get a good therapist, since the most proven path to recovery is the combination of medication if needed plus psychotherapy.
Blessings!
Betsy
