Hi all,
I would love to take my son to a swim class but am having a hard time finding a place with a swimming pool that teaches infants and also comes recommended. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks much.

Hi -

I took my son to the PAV YMCA in Berwyn when he was 7 mos for the mom (or dad) and baby class. At that age it is just a water acclamation class - kind of like a play group that happens to be in the water. It was a lot of fun. He is 3 1/2 now and loves swimming. Someone else posted in regards to the changing room at the Y - and she's right, it is a challenge. Lifetime Fitness has large family changing rooms that are probably a lot easier with a little one.

Hey there... I have taken my daughter to the Oak Lawn Park district splish splash class.. it's held at the high school on central. It's very casual, you of course are in the pool with them the whole time. You can bring a toy for your child if you want. They have noodles and belly boards and I brought swim wings. They sing songs. It's mostly free time with little direction. It was nice since my hubby could come and sit on the side, take photos and help get Jenna out of the pool & dried off. Good luck and have fun!

I second the Bolingbrook Park District. My son started swim lessons there when he was about 6 months old and he loved it. We went up until he was just over a year and plan to go back again when the weather gets nice. They not only teach swimming skills, they do a lot of fun activities and also teach water safety. It is a great program.

Hi! Not sure what area you are looking at, but Lockport Townships Community Wellness center at the high school offers an Infant Parent Swim for 6wks to 3 yr olds. The next one start on March 8, which I have my daughter enrolled. Good Luck!

We did mom and baby classes at the Palos Park District during the summer right by the Police Station. I now live in Bolingbrook and LOVE the swim lessons offered there.
good luck

It's fun to stay at the YMCA! My 8 month old and I take our lessons there. The only drawback is that the locker rooms never have a good place to put the baby down so that you can get out of your wet suit and then get the kid out of its wet suit. I mean, you can't put them down to play on the wet floor...gross! I bring my husband with so that he can hold the baby while I go in to change, and then I bring her in to change after I'm done. Good luck!

Do you have a local YMCA? Or a Lifetime Fitness? Both have great programs. Good luck!

The Bolingbrook Park district has an EXCELLENT swimming program for infants. They have a nationally-recognized infant swimming teacher who developed their curriculum and each infant teacher is trained in it.

Lincoln way central and East campus both have mom and tot swim lessons. My kids go to lessons there and love it. they have 1:4 ratio of kids to teacher. The last session for the season is starting within the next few weeks and then they start again until May or so.

Good Luck!

The American Red Cross and the AAP don't recommend swim lessons for kids under 4. If you decide to take him now all the high schools teach swim lessons.

When we lived in Lockport we took our then 9 month old to their Park District program at Denick pool. She and my husband enjoyed it.
