I have a 10 year old nephew who is really having some trouble. He lives with my mom (his Grandmother) and she doesn't know what to do anymore. She has tried a couple of different places to help him, but he gets kicked out becase they aren't equipped to handle his disorder (mostly the violent comments). He supposedly has ADHD, bipolar, and possible Aspergers. His therapists tell her his needs to be in a long term therapy treatment center, but he is on Medicaid and most don't take it and my mom isn't so sure she wants to do that anyway. Does anyone know of any really good places for therapy in the Dallas area or any other ideas for her?

What can I do next?

Brain Balance seems good but it is quite pricey. They are an educational service not a medical service. You can read the book Disconnected Kids by Melillo to learn more about it. There are a couple of chiropractors who do similar programs who take insurance, not sure about Medicaid. Consider changing his diet. IgG testing can show food sensitivities and removing those can often help a child. The Feingold diet is helpful for ADHD too. Dr. Bock's book, Healing The New Childhood Epidemics: Autism, Asthma, ADHD and Allergies may be helpful also.

I would definitely try Brain Balance. Its a learning and treatment facility that works using play therapy, exercises, diet recommendations and gives at-home instructions for those on all levels of the autism spectrum. I'm sure they don't take Medicaid, but you should at least check them out. Go to www.brainbalancecenters.com for more information.

Have you check out The Depression Bipolar Support Alliance? They have peer support groups, social functions, and educational nights. I know they have a group for adolescents. It is free. The website is http://www.DBSA-Dallas.net. Give it a try. I'm glad he's getting help so young. I also have Bipolar disorder and ADHD and wasn't diagnosed until I was 39! It all makes sense now. I'm in a great group, but its all adults. If I hear of anything else, I'll be sure to let you know. They are both very difficult diseases, your family is in my prayers.

check out LISD SEPTSA. Lewisville ISD Sepecial Education Parent Teacher Student Association. They offer to help to all those in the area, not just families inside LISD boundries. www.lisd.net under community partners I think will find a link to their website. There are MANY families that deal with the same issues and have already walked in your shoes, many of them are willing to offer advice to save another family the same headaches they went through with their own children. They also have a directory that lists many drs and groups in the area that our families have already found helpful.

Best of luck!
