My 3rd grader's class wants to make ornaments, but for a cause such as the troops or a childrens' hospital. Does anyone have experience with this?

What can I do next?

My nephew is in the army. Last Christmas he was in Iraq. My daughter's brownie troop did a lot of things and sent packages over to them.

One of the things that we did was color pages and put them in Christmas Cards

We sent over a lot of home-made goodies - things like cookies & brownies.

We made a snack out of chocolate, pretzels, cereal, etc - put them in baggies and sent them over.

They really appreciated what they got - being so far away from home

When you send something over - go to the postoffice - they have free boxes and no matter how stuffed or heavy they are - the shipping price remains the same.

Good Luck & Merry Christmas

T.,

I'm sorry to rain on your parade, but I saw a report that said if you want something to arrive to any of our troops overseas in time for Christmas, you would have had to send it yesterday, the 4th. Unless you were going to pay some outrageous mail fees, I'd start thinking about the hospital route. Maybe try calling the closest hospital and talk to whoever is in charge of community services?

Good luck, and what a lovely sentiment.

Check out Operation Buckeye. They send boxes of needed materials to troops. The class could collect needed materials or sponser a box for only $10. That way they could include a personlized card.

First, ask around your school or church/place of worship to see if anyone has a family member in service. If not, go through the USO.

Hi T.,

I just read the "you would have had to send it yesterday" post and I say if the kids want to send to the troops, then send to the troops. You can always put in a note that you got a late start. Also remember that Orthodox Christians (e.g. Greek Orthodox, Russian Orthodox) celebrate Christmas on January 7. You could tell the troops that this is for "Russian Christmas".

How nice that they want to do something like this!

I used to teach preschool and have helped make ornaments for YEARS. Do you want contact names for military or children's hospitals? I can get BOTH!

Do you need ornament making ideas, too?
