Sending My Daughter to School Tomorrow????

This morning my daughter was throwing up. At first I thought it seemed like a stomach virus, but after keeping an eye on her all day (I kept her home from school), I noticed that it was probably due to dehydration. Tomorrow is her last day of school and I really don't want her to miss her last day, but I am tempted to keep her home tomorrow as well to keep an eye on her and make sure she drinks enough throughout the day. She starts camp next week in her school, so even if she misses her last day, she will be back in a week for camp. Is it worth keeping her home on the last day of school? I just really want to keep an eye on her. What would you do? Thanks in advance for your responses!

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your responses! As of now, it seems like I will be keeping her home. She is still sleeping and I don't want to wake her. And by the way, dehydration can cause vomiting!

Has she been able to eat and drink small amounts and keep it down? Does she still feel sick or does she feel ok? Any fever? Is tomorrow a full day of school or just a half day?

I would say if it's just a half day, she does okay the rest of today and tonight, and she feels fine in the morning, and no fever, I would send her. At this point, all you can do is play it by ear.

If she doesn't have a temperature, and hasn't vomited in 24 hours, and there are no other symptoms, then I think it would be OK to send her.

Dehydration is a side-effect of vomiting, not the other way around.
The rule of thumb is that they can return to school a full 24 hours after the last time they throw up and must not have a fever.

Personally, I'd keep her home unless she hasn't vomited since this a.m and is keeping food/fluids down just fine. Dehydration is serious stuff. We had norovirus last week and it took me a couple days to feel even halfway good. You want her to get well at home, drinking fluids, not having to go to ER and get subcutaneous fluids through an IV, which is going to be far more traumatic than missing a day of school.

I was not aware, that Dehydration causes vomiting????????????
But vomiting, can CAUSE dehydration, due to loss of fluids.
How did you arise at the conclusion, that she is vomiting because of, dehydration??? And that her condition, is Dehydration?

So can she drink things and eat normally, WITHOUT vomiting????
Or not?
Does she have other symptoms?????? Fever? Other cold or flu symptoms????

The general rule is: 24 hours without fever or vomiting.
Then they can go to school.

My daughter, had a couple of classmates that missed the last day of school. Why? They were, sick. One had a stomach flu. The other had a cold and had fever.
They did not go to the last day of school.

I'd keep her home in case you are wrong about the reason for her throwing up. Also, if she spends time outside, it maay be too much for her, seeing as she spent the previous day throwing up.

She should have rest and be back to normal, being able to eat and drink.

Hope she feels just fne soon.

The rules at most schools are the same. If she has been throwing up she needs to stay at home for 24 hours before going back to school. And if it is a virus of some sort do you really want to spread that throughout the school? the last day of school is not that bitg a deal. How old is your daughter? I would keep her home if she has something coming up next week and will be right back there.

If she's still not up to it, I'd keep her home. If it's the last day it's not like they'll be doing anything important.

If she's feeling fine and you think it was just dehydration, and she wants to go, then I'd send her.

Now, if it WAS dehydration, then you definitely need to really get it across to her that she needs to drink water. Especially if she's going to some kind of camp!!! My daughter used to not drink enough water then something just clicked in her brain that made her realize she needs lots and lots of water!! I guess talking about plants, animals and any living thing needing water really got thru to her!!

Good luck!!

I'm with DVMMom - if she can keep something down today, feels okay, no fever and especially if it's a half day, send her. If it's not a half day, you could send her only for a half day.

Mothers please. She made a mistake and said dehydration caused the vomitting. Big deal. Just answer the question!

Keep her home. Its not her senior year.

Dehydration does not cause vomiting. Like, ever.

That said, I'd probably send her if she seems fine now...

If she has been and remains fine, I would send her. Our school's rule is 24 hours fever free. If she has no fever and is eating a decent diet and staying hydrated, I think she should go.

If she's been fine all day and is OK in the morning, I'd let her go. Is it a full day?
