Has anyone's 6 week old developed dry skin all over, almost looks like a heat rash. I've tried using a different baby wash, idk what to do now, any suggestions?

What can I do next?

Hi M.,
My babies and me suffer from Sensitive skin. In my opinion Cetaphil is the best brand. I use it for myself and also my Pediatrician recommend it. Since Dove is the brand I use for me I tried it on my babies and problem solved!! It work better than Aveeno Baby.

That's pretty normal with newborns.... it's almost like they shed their babyskin. You might use some baby oil right out of the bath while the skin is still moist to hold in the moisture. I'm sure your pediatrician could give you more advice.. but I believe I remember my newborns getting dry like that as well.

My daughter had the same thing. We switched our laundry detergent to a "free and clear" variety and wash all the family's clothes in that. All and Tide both carry it, I believe. It does not contain dies or perfumes. We also stopped washing her with soap. We use a cleansing bar with her still and she is nearly 6 now. Cetaphil is the brand we use.
Good luck!

DId your child just have a vaccine? It can be a reaction to a vaccine and even though your doctor will tell you otherwise, it is true. The skin is a detox avenue for your body. And it is NOT normal for your 6 week old to have a rash all over. It was caused by something!

If washing with just water and using Dreft detergent don't work try pulling dairy and wheat from your diet if you're breastfeeding. My son is now three and we just figured out that is what has been causing his skin problems all this time. Also, when I was b/f and drank citrus (orange juice) he would break out from that too. I wish I had known then what I know now. The nice thing about pulling that from your diet for a while as a test is that it's not going to hurt anything.

Renew body wash and lotion. Safe for all ages.

I would make sure that the baby's clothing is made from cotton only (breathes better than synthetics). Also make sure you use washing detergent that is unscented and non colored.

Hope this helps.

This happened to us. We were already using the most gentle wash we could get our hands on (California Baby). We were advised to only bathe him weekly and wait. It worked. His skin was perfectly clear in two weeks.

M.- what baby wash are you using? what laundry detergent are you using? Try switching to a non-toxic brand- I use Mela-power. It is gentle enough for the whole family yet effective even on my husbands work clothes! Use toxic free baby wash. Just because it says baby shampoo or baby wash- it may have harmful ingredients. I use Koala Pals or Burts Bees. I see someone suggested baby oil- please use a natural one like Burts bees Apricot or Vit. E oil- not a petroleum based product! You will just be adding more toxins to your childs body that they will need to get out. Vacines can indeed also be toxic to your childs body! While drs. will deny any ill effects, that is just an additional toxin added to your child, who may already be getting more toxins then his/her body can handle from our environment/cleaning/laundry/perfumes/lotions etc. Msg me if you need more suggestions! My home has been toxin free for 6+ months!!!

Check with your dr to make sure it really is just dry skin - my son had that problem b/c he was allergic to soap. I couldn't use baby soap of any kind, the only think that worked was Cetaphil (it's a little expensive but worth it). They have a skin cleanser (many women use this as their face wash) and a big tub of moisturizer. I like it b/c it isn't greasy. Also, when I wash his clothes I double rinse to make sure I get all the detergent out. Good luck!

My daughter had extremely sensitive skin, and we stopped using body wash on her. If they are bathed pretty often, at that I young I do not see a point in using soap if you still clean everything well. We did use shampoo about every other time and just cleaned with water and a washcloth.

If you feel the need to use soap try to find the most extra sensitive kind you can. Some people might recommend using natural soaps however those can still irritate sensitive skin. Though the ingredients are natural they can still cause mild allergic reactions and still have an odor or can leave residue. The same with lotions.

Also consider if the baby is being completely rised off with fresh, clean water. Using a baby bathtub will not completely rinse soap off enough, because you are using water that already has soap in it.

We started taking her in the shower(when it was time for one of us to) when she was little. One of us would get in and hold her, while the other one stood outside the shower and reached in to wash her. Of course making sure the temp was ok and her head was out or covered properly. (if you point the shower head down a little straighter, rather than up and out over you, you will have much better control of where it gets on them) It just took a couple minutes and her skin was much healthier and noticably softer not irritated.

Just wanted to add that I second the baby oil of Grandma TM. We always use it, especially in the winters she gets eczima, after her bath(now 4) it has never irritated her skin like most lotions.
