Hello. I have an almost 7-month old that I started on solid foods at about 6 months. He eats the basic rice, oatmeal, green beans, sweet potato, and peas. I make his baby food and am thinking about the next veggies to prepare. Also- I ususally only feed him solids at one time during the day- sometimes two. He is breastfed. I am looking for ideas on feeding progression.
Thanks.

for the first year all of his nutrition comes from breast milk.. the solid foods are just practice for eating food later.

I kept mine on 1 meal of solids until almost 8 monhts.. then we did breakfast cereal and fruit and dinner cereal and veggie.. somewhere around 9 months they go to 3 meals a day.. breakfast lunch and dinner.

I did not make baby fruits it is a lot of work and does not yield many servings. It is pretty easy to cook a batch of sweet potatoes for the baby.. (do you freeze the baby food in ice cube trays ?? that works great)

by 9 months try cherios or the baby "puffs" some kids immediately put the cheerios in their mouths.. other kids hate the texture of fingers foods..

If he hates the finger foods - wait a week or so and try again..

I liked the beech nut baby foods... the beechnut dinners have very simple recipes (chicken carots and peas etc) no spices or anythig..

Hi J.,
My little guy is going to be 6 months old in a few days. I also prepare his food. I have made carrots, sweet potatoes, greenbeans and peas (which I made last night). I also tried squash but I bought the wrong kind. I started to make fruit now too since I am going to increase his feeding from one a day to twice in about a week. Do you freeze your baby food?

Steamed carrots or califlower comes out really smooth. Mashed banana, homemade applesauce or homemade pear sauce is yummy. You can also puree fresh canaloupe - it comes out watery, my babies loved it! Cooked beets puree really good too, but are such a mess and stain so I never did them much. My kids never cared for homemade broccoli baby food because of the grainy texture, but you could try it. I would stick with the cereals like you do and just try some new veggies/fruits and stick to that until 9 mo, when you can introduce some cheerios, toast, mashed beans, cheese etc.

Try carrots, easy to puree. Then start introducing the not-so-sweet veggies (anything that doesn't give gas or intestinal discomfort).

In addition to what you mentioned above, my son also really liked squash. I have generally bought his food and have only made a couple things. He is now 10 months old and is actually progressing rather slowly with texture. He still does not want anything lumpy and does not really want any finger foods except for a vanilla organic teething buscuit that I found. Now that he is 10 months old, he eats green beans, carrots, sweet potato, squash, corn, rice, barley and oatmeal cereals, and pretty much any kind of fruit - as long as it is pureed. He still gags on anything with any kind of texture. He only recently started taking little bites of puffs, but, still makes a disgusted face if he gets too much of one in his mouth. The ped. told me not to worry about and to just follow his lead and take it slow as far as progressing to stage 3 and finger foods. He does do 3 meals a day now and about 24 ounces of formula. So, I guess every baby's progression with food is different. I actually worried for a little while about the fact that he only still wants purees until I talked to some other moms who said their babies had issues with texture and a very sensitive gag reflex too. It made me feel a little better. Good luck!

My pedi told me that she could eat as much veggies as she wanted, so I'd offer them either right before or right after breastfeeding, several times during the day.

I made my own baby food for the most part, and just checked with the lists of forbidden foods to be sure I wasn't giving her something inappropriate for her age. I put it in the blender with waster until it was silky smooth and she gave me no problems eating it. The more flavors you can get your child used to the better.

Best wishes

I also have a little boy I'm making baby food for, he was born June 22nd this year! I made food for my daughter as well. I have the book Super Baby Food by Ruth Yuval, I always reccomend it when a parent has a food questio. It has amazing info in it (sometimes too much). For each month it has foods that can be introduced to the baby and a sample feeding schedule. It's great! Obviously it is an outline, and at this age solid food is a supplement to breastfeeding for nutrients, but you're working toward your child being a healthy eater by age 1 with a diverse amount of foods. I don't have my book on me right now, but if you have specific questions about foods and amounts after all the other responses you get, please feel free to send me a message and I'll be happy to give you the basics of what the book says for 7 months old. I know asparagus is a food on there, and egg yolk (but no egg whites), and I think it was eating solids 2-3 times a day with breastfeeding about 4 times a day getting about 32 oz. Hope this helps!

Try avocado, it is loaded with the healthy fats that are escential for baby's developing brain, you can add applesauce,or bananas to sweeten it if he doesn't like it. I also have the Super Baby Food book, it is by Ruth Yaron. I used it for all 3 of my breastfed babies. She is very health conscience and even makes super porridge for her babies starting at 6 months. This porridge consists of beans (protein), veggies, brewers yeast, and breastmilk. Never did try the mixture, but I did add brewers yeast to the oatmeal for added nutrition. And the avocado's are a first food, very easy to digest. Get the book, you can use it for years. It even has toddler recipes, and everything is homemade.

Hey J.,
So my Daughter is was born in the same month as your son in 2008, I just took her for her 6 month exam today and asked out Dr. the same question you are asking here today. She is already eating a fruit at lunch and a veggie at dinner (2oz each), plus bottles. Our Doctor told us to wait another week, then up her to three times a day, when I asked her how much, she said as much as it takes to fill her up, just watch for her full signals. She said that it depends on the baby whether they want a bottle and food at the same time but to try to get her to drink some formula before or after she eats.
At 3 months she was eating rice cereal (Dr. recommended for spit up issues- to try and weigh down her food a little) At 4 months she was eating stage one foods at dinner, at 5 months we switched her to twice a day, and now I guess we will be going to three times a day. (time to buy stock in baby food!! lol)
We use the Earths Best organic jarred foods, I really like them, the stage two are 79 cents a jar at Target and come in so many flavors and combinations (more online). Plus they are organic which makes me feel like I am feeding her more healthy.
Also we were told to offer a sippy cup of water or watered down juice to prevent constipation. She is only 6 months but actually does really really well with her sippy cup. Its the suppy cup nipple we put on her Advent bottle along with the handles that attach.

Good luck, and feel free to write me if you have anymore questions sense our babies are the same age.

A. :-)
