Severe Diaper Rash Help

My 10 month old was on antibiotics which we completed 9 days ago and she still has diareah (forgive the spelling) but worse off she has what seems to be an incurable sever case of diaper rash. She is raw and sometimes slightly bleeding when I clean here. I have used Desitin, Triple Paste, Powder, Nystatin prescribed by her doctor, and fresh Aloe. The Aloe calms it down somewhat but can't seem to kick it. Any suggestions of anything that has worked for you? Thanks

What can I do next?

probitics in her milk or juice twice per day to put the healthy bacteria back in her gut. It will also help boost her immune system.

For the rash, if it not yeast..a good layer of neosporin with Desitin creamy gobbed on top. Don't be afraid to put on too much. The more the better. My ped suggested it when we had the same problem with my first son and it has worked liked a charm ever since.

From expereince only I will tell you to skip the wipes. Use viva paper towels, and make an astringent of baking soda and warm water, and soak your paper towels in that. Sqeeze out the access, and wipe clean. Avoid all soaps to wash your daughter...that just adds to the rash. Also I found that if you put milk of mag on the rash, it brings out the acidic in the rash(ask your ped)...mine told me to gently put some on the rash....cleared up the red very fast....it will not burn them. Also, the desitin overnight cream is great for extra relief. Yogurt on the rash will help also...just plain. The probiotics is what cures that....also with her being on antibiotics, you need to clear the rash from the inside also....get her some probitics(found in yogurt), and or in powder form at your local health food store....she will be in great shape by thurs. The antibiotics are removing all bacteria from her body....even the good, so you need to replace this with good bacteria....Most likely she has a yeast infection from the antibiotics or the start of one, so just take care of it. Also....let her naked whenever poss. Let us know.:)

I'm quite sure it's a yeast infection caused by the antibiotics. Check the inside of her mouth to look for white patches there, too. The doctor who prescribed the antibiotics can prescribe an anti-fungal medication to you (most likely over the phone) if you call and describe the situation. It's very common but important you treat the yeast and not just treat it like a diaper rash. Good luck!

Dear M.:
Are you still a nursing mom? Your diet is important to help this situation. My infant had a serious case, my pediatrician told me to go with cloth diapers (I had a diaper service to relieve my extra work). He told me to undo the clean diaper while she was sleeping (that was a real technique) and I used Caldesene powder which worked for me. I know that there is a product on the market today that has pantothenic acid in it and is used for diaper rash, but I do not know the name. A relative uses it for her infant and it works great. Good luck.

My son had a severe diaper rash like this when he was just about your daughters age. Boudreaux's Butt Paste worked wonders. One application and it calmed right down. Also, try bathing her in Aveeno Baby or Burt's Bees, it's very gentle. They are a bit pricey, but worth it. Let me know if these are any help=)

Most likely you are dealing with a yeast infection now. You might want to try giving her some yogurt to help fight that off. I'd had yeast infections the entire length of my 1st pregnancy. When I had to see another Dr. when I was expecting my twins, they explained that I should eat atleast one serving of yogurt a day. It worked--didn't have to fight off one infection. Also, skip the wipes and use a very soft paper towel and plain water to wipe her for the next few days. Letting her "air dry" for a while will do her little bottom wonders as well. Hope this helps!

Give your baby a bath with some baking soda in it. let your baby sit for a 10 minutes then get some air to her bottom. i would also try the bordeaux butt paste which you can buy in the store. If that does not work call the doctor. they may also be able to give a prescription for the diaper rash. You may also want to try aveeno oatmeal bath. sorry to hear she is not feeling well. make sure too to give her some yogurt so she does not get a yeast infection, since you know us girls get it from too many antibiotics. You could also do the brat diet bannanas, rice, apples and toast to help get rid of the diarreha. good luck

Hey M.,
My son used to get awful diaper rash whenever he was given an ab. It would cause blisters basically that lasted for days. So we used A&D ointment on him and that worked great! Also, when she is going onto an antibiotic buy Florastor Kids, its a probiotic that is added to whatever it is your child drinks and that helps keep the intestines functioning properly. My son is now 4 and last time he was on ab I still had to give him the Florastor because he was still getting very loose bowels and complaining they were "burning" his bottom. Hope this helps!

She may have a yeast rash and not a diaper rash - use some Lotrimin - if it is yeast you should notice improvement in a day or two. My kids never had a diaper rash - always got a yeast rash, and it is common after finishing antibiotics. Hope she feels better.

When you bathe her, let her crawl around naked to let it air out. Don't use scented wipes. Use "free" of scents and everything, or use a plain cloth and water. Start giving her foods that will firm up her BMs like cheese products and bananas if that blocks her. Bananas works as either a loosener or firmer depending on the child. Give more clear fluids rather than juices as the acids may be annoying her too. The best thing that worked for all 5 of my kids was pure corn starch. My mother and my grandmother used it years ago as well. Let her air out a lot. Lay towels down on the floor so if she pees you can catch it.

If she has bad rash, do not use Desitin or anything like it!!! I did that when my son had a mild rash (just very red and sore looking, no bleeding), and he screamed in pain!! I felt awful. The best thing that worked for me was washing his butt after each poop with white, antibacterial soap and my hands (no washcloths), air drying, and a thin layer of Aquaphor.
However, if it not going away, it may be fungal (yeast)infection that may need a prescription cream to heal it. I would see her doctor ASAP!!!

Hi M.. I don't personally know about severe diaper rashes but a friend of mine had a daughter with one. It was just as bad as what you described and she had tried everything she could think of to get rid of it too. What finally worked was mixing in neosporin with her triple paste creme. It helped heal the sores. After a week or so she saw definite improvement.
Hope this helps....good luck!

We had one like that after augmentin. I'd take her to the doctor. If she has open sores, it is an invitation for a serious infection in her diaper area. Most likely it is yeast and she'll need a prescription cream. Don't mess around with this one.

For a usual diaper cream, I like Burt's Baby Bees if you are using disposable diapers. I have a special cream for cloth diapers-- Grandma El's I think it is called-- but if you are using disposables no need to special order that!

Try going to the healthfood store and getting some acidophilus. You want the gelcap form that has the powder in it. You can open the capsule and add it to their drink. Stay away from dairy products. You will want to let her go naked on a blanket to let the air get to it. What's happened is the antibiotic has killed all bacteria including the good bacteria that is found in the stomach.

It definitely helps to keep her out of the diaper as long as possible and I also used my blowdryer on low setting to get the area very dry. There is a presciption cream called Vusion, very expensive, so ask your doctor for samples or a rebate card, but it seemed to do the trick. I t took about aweek or so to cure my son. Oh, and try not to use baby wipes, I was using sterile gauze/ cotton balls to clean him until the sores healed. Hope this helps.

I just a very similar situation happen where my daughter's diaper rash despite many different types of treatment did not heal. I would suggest that you take your daughter to the doctor's to have them take a look at it. I did and found out that she had a yeast infection (not the kind that women get but a skin yeast infection; I would have never know this had I not taken her to the doctors). The yeast infection will not heal with the diaper rash ointment. My doctor told me to use Lotrimin (this is an anti-fungal cream used for jock itch/athletes foot). I have been using this since Friday and the rash has completely healed. I am not sure this is what your baby has, so I would suggest that you have her seen by the pediatrician because most diaper rashes should clear within a couple of days and if not, she should probably be seen. Hope this helps. Also, some helpful tips in the meantime....the wipes might be further irrating her skin so try not to use them rather run her bottom under warm water to clean her bottom and try to let her air out if you can several times per day by not wearing a diaper. Good luck...I know it's painful seeing your little one in pain.

Diarrhea is one of the hardest words to spell! haha. Stick her in a cool tub often to clean her diaper area w/ a wash cloth and water. Let her dry and go naked..apply the dr prescribed Nystatin...Stick w/ that...and let her crawl around some more while that kinda dries. Before you diaper her, slather her w/ the triple paste, or butt paste to protect her skin from further injury. Yep..yogurt sounds good too.

It sounds like she has a yeast infection as others have mentioned. Nystatin is an anti-fungal and will help with this better than any over the counter anti-fungals. I agree with the poster who said to skip the wipes - they can be irritating. Use a plain washcloth with warm water, keep her naked as much as possible to let the area dry out, and slather on the Nystatin. The yogurt and/or probiotics might help too to regulate the bacteria levels in her system. Best of luck!

Hi.

Aquaphor Healing Ointment (Advanced Therapy) and powder did the job for us. When my daughter had diaper rash, I would apply a thick layer of the ointment at every diaper change and then sprinkle powder on top. It created a nice thick barrier between her skin and the pee/poop. Also, fresh air is great for drying the rash. If you can leave her diaper less for even a small amount of time that would help. I would recommend keeping her on a wood/tile/linoleum floor though... easier to clean if she makes a mess. ;)

My pediatrician had us use a clotramizol (generic Lotrimin) cream on my son's diaper rash. Yep, that's the same stuff you put on athlete's foot. Any generic brand works fine - clears up diaper rash in just a couple days. Put it on by itself three times a day when you change her diaper. On the diaper changes when you're not using the lotrimin, use some diaper cream just to protect the area. Good luck!

I can almost guarantee you she/he has a yeast infection, not a diaper rash. Is it red and raised? Ask your local pharmacist after describing what it looks like. They will probably recommend an OTC topical creme called Clotrimazole. It will clear up quickly. In the meantime, change the diaper frequently, & blot baby totally dry before diapering. Moisture isn't good for a diaper or yeast rash.

It does sound like yeast may be a factor, but if you tried Nystatin for an adequate time frame and it didn't clear up the rash, it could just be that due to the ongoing diarrhea, she just can't get a break for her delicate bum skin to heal! I know you are doing this, but I would just be hyper-vigilant in changing her diaper the minute you realize she has anything in her diaper, because as I said, diarrhea can definitely wreak havoc on a sensitive little bum...

Also, instead of the many "paste-y" diaper creams that required too much wiping to get off, thus further irritating the condition, I always used A&D Ointment, which became commonly known in our household as "butt cream"... :)

Since it is an ointment, it seemed to be the most soothing for my son, and believe me, we tried them all... I would just douse his bum with it, making sure to cover the whole area pretty thick, so it would continue to "melt" onto his skin while warming in his diaper. And since it can be bought anywhere in a generic brand, it wasn't expensive to keep a bunch on hand.

Good luck with whatever you try... I know how desperate you can get for something to work... hope your baby feels better soon!

We were in that position several times with our daughter who suffers really evil diaper rashes. Our doctor prescribed ketoconazole which works fabulously. We use that first, let it dry for a couple of mins, then slather on the desitin and then top of with baby powder. Additionally, when she was a pre-walker/crawler, we would give her naked days where literally most of the day i would lay her on waterproof crib sheets around the house and just let it air out.

Hi M.,
Go natural! Life Start by Natren is a pro-biotic that you can give to infants - toddlers. It will help to get her system full of the good bacteria that the antibiotic has taken out of her.
I'd stick with the aloe and/or check with the healthfood store to see what they might have.
Good luck! It is so hard to deal with that sore hiney - and you feel so bad for the child.
Jane

I'm sorry if I make this very abrupt, I don't have much time, but I wanted to address your question. If the diaper rash also has pimple-like bumps, my son's Ped. told me to use the 7 day basic Miconazole (vaginal antifungal cream). If there is no bumps, I found success for my daughter with the lanolin cream (breastfeeding cream). I hope this helps!

I remember when my son was a baby and he would get this recurrent diaper rash thing. After going through every lotion and even fungal creams, what finally cured it was putting his bottom under warm water running from the tub for a minute or so. The trick is also to make sure you do not smell any urine on the skin. Do this several times or whenever there is a diaper change. In three days or less his rash was gone and it never came back. It is something how I thought my son's skin was clean, but it wasn't until I made sure the urine was off the skin. The diarrhea thing can also be a culprit to the skin as well, so obviously frequent diaper changes are in order. Also step up the water intake. I think dehydration can cause a strong urine

She may actually have a yeast infection from the antibiotics as well as soreness from frequent diarrhea.
Try letting her bottom soak in some ivory dish detergent and then blow dry on low setting with hair dryer.
It works. Repeat as needed.

Butt Paste works awesome! You can get it at Wal-mart. As for the antibiotic - this would be a similar case as when women take antibiotics and it gives them sometimes a yeast infection. Give your child yogurt to help balance the natural bacterias in her body.

As a preventitive measure for the future, I recommend you wash her with soap and water instead of using baby wipes. Desitin seemed to work best with my kids. She may also have a yeast infection due to the antibiotics. Have her physician look at her again.

Hello, I have 3 suggestions as I have a little one that gets severe diaper rash as well and have found these things to help her

First give her an oatmeal bath - Let her sit and play and by morning its a whole lot better.

Second it sounds weird but it works our doctor said that for women olive oil is very good in the area down below. Mix equal amounts of olive oil and water together shake well and apply. I bought a $1 spray bottle and keep it in there and shake it up and spray when I do a diaper change.

Thirdly I use Lotrium (yes jock itch stuff) neospraon, and destin again equal amounts I store it in an old baby food gerber plastic container mix together and apply works great as well.

I have found for me that the oatmeal bath, then I spray the olive oil solution, and then I apply the triple paste works best for my little one.

Also at night when they are in the wet diaper the longest apply the olive oil or vaselonie to protect the skin and it will keep as well.

Hope it helps, good luck

M. you have a ton of good suggestions but I must say that Burts Bees Diaper Cream is always with me. It is all natural. My son had this issue for a few days and I applied the Burts Bees every time I changed his diaper. I also would use warm water on a paper towel instead of wipes. It can be a pain but it is well worth it. The bad rash was gone within 2 days. Also, with the yeast rash, Lotrimin is a good choice put on 2-3 times a day.
