My son (16) has had severe hives all over his body for 5 months now. They start in the fall and hes had them mildly the past couple years and they always go away within a short amount of time. This year he got them really really bad in September and they have not gone away. He is on sterroids which I know are horrible for him but no doctor can figure out what the issue is. He did food tests and seasonal allergy tests and nothing came up. Anyone have a similar experiances and got any answers?

I suggest that stress can cause hives. What is his life like? Is home stable and.meeting his physical and emotional needs? What is school like for him? Does he have friends and a satisfying social life? Perhaps an appointment with a counselor would help.

I agree with teh others that it could be stress. I get stress-related hives and they tend to get pretty bad. Look at his life and see if he's stretched too thin - school, friends, extracurriculars, etc.

Good luck,

My friends daughter gets stress related hives. Hers started in Middle School. She would obsess about school work and being at the top of her class. If there was a major test she would break out and would have what looked like welts on her face and body. She's in college now and still has the same issue but not as bad. I've told my friend that she may need to see a therapist on how to deal with stress but she thinks it would stress her out further.

Check to see if there is anything that is bothering him. Also watch to see what is going on with him in his life when he breaks out in hives. It really could be stress related. Good luck to you both..

My daughter gets hives due to cold weather. She has been diagnosed with Cold Urtiaria. This sounds similar to what she has experienced. Here is a link with info...

I had hive really badly and they were stress related. Once I changed some things in my life they went away.

At the time I was working 4am to 12:30pm plus a part time job so I was not sleeping. I was also in process of purchasing my first home by myself. When I had an anxiety attack (I really thought it was a heart attack, same symptoms) that put me in the hospital that's when I had to slow down and they went away on their own.

You say they start in the fall, my guess is that maybe something is going on in school that is really stressing him out. Could also be lack of rest if he gets up early and does a lot of extra activities.

Added: I took Claritin for hives, but I don't think they make it anymore. It was the ONLY thing that helped give some relief. Ask the pharmacist if they have it in prescription form and/or talk to the doctor.

Have these doctors tested him for other conditions like psoriasis? Other conditions can mimic hives. You might want to schedule an appointment with a dermatologist at this point if you haven't done so already.

Is he on any other medication? My mom took a certain medicine for years and then one day she developed hives. It took over a year for her doctor to figure it out. Once she switched to another medicine, the hives went away.
