I almost took myself to the ER last night. I have severe lower back pain and constipation now for 2 days. I am due August 31st. It was so hard for me to sleep last night and I am sure that it will be the same this evening........HELP! Will a suppository do the trick? Is the back pain due to the constipation? HELP!!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

So it only lasted the 2 nights and I called my doctor and they asked the specific's and said that there was nothing I could do, maybe take a tylenol and try some back exercises.....as far as the constipation goes my dr. said fleet enema or dulcolax suppositories......THANKS for taking the time to reply. I am feeling much better now. C.

That's exactly what I had when I went in to labor. Call the doctor NOW! That sounds like labor exactly.

I had really bad lower back pain during my first pregnancy due to a tipped uterus. Part of it had to do with my uterus stretching my SI joint. Whenever my daughter would go through a little growth spurt, I'd basically be immobile, unable to sleep or find any comfort, for 36 - 48 hours. IT would wake me up in the middle of the night. The only thing I found to alleviate the pain was getting a pregnancy wedge pillow and using it as an incline for my back, as opposed to a wedge under my belly or knees. Then I'd also put a pillow under my knees and a few behind my back, so basically like a lounge chair in bed. Take a couple Tylenol as often as I could and not move. I got a lot of reading done since it was all I could do. Like I said, it would flare up every 2-3 weeks or so and then just go away. It lasted my whole pregnancy and I did end up having back labor with my daughter. Saw the doc several times about it, but they said it was just part of pregnancy and there was nothing to really be done.

In terms of the constipation, because I know it's uncomfortable - my doc said to take Citrucel to alleviate it. It seemed to help me a lot. I also skip my prenatal when I start to get constipated because the iron just exacerbates it.

I hope you can find something to help!

I know this is no help right now when you are in pain, but you will need to check with the Dr. before you try anything major. He can order a stool softener at the very least. But most of all he will be able to tell you what is safe for the baby. I try to make a checklist of all the possible remedies and try them one at a time...with moderation. Did you drink water and take a gentle walk? Did you have a high fiber meal of salad, bran muffin, fresh fruit, and popcorn?? Cherries are the best for muscle cramping and constipation while pregnant! Buy a bag of fresh dried cherries and munch away!! Try others kinds of fruit if they are not your favorite. But if you keep the quantities moderate and drink water you can't really go wrong! Have some yogurt if you can do dairy, because it will improve future conditions. Celery juice does wonders! And take a warm Epsom salt bath if the Dr approves. The back pain could be the constipation or a combination of factors like position of the baby, so do a little of all of the above until you find relief. Maybe a heating pad on low!!
I sleep with two or three pillows between my legs to relief pressure!! Experiment with positions that take the weight off! The rubber ball on the back is a great lamaze trick to relax the muscles!!Lean back on a big exercise ball to help with breathing! More oxygen equals less pain!!

call your care provider... im sure everything is allright. your baby is probably moving ( the back pain) and as far as constipation goes, a lot of moms have that.

your care provider will surely have some calming answers for you.

sure that it could not be labor. I had back labor with my 2 daughter and it was worse than regular labor.

I would talk to your OB/GYN. It may be early labor in disguise, or it can be a more complex problem. I am concerned about the amount of stress this might be causing you and the baby.

Try magniesum citrate, Fleet enema, prune juice all which I think are yucky but effective. Consult your OB/GYN though before anything.

Try doing prenatal yoga. I would call the doctor about the pain, but for the constipation yoga totally helped with my second pregnancy. I just had a dvd, I think it was Kristen Ikel. It helped a lot. Good luck!
