Sex Offender Parent at My Dd's School

If there was convicted sex offender at your child’s school do you feel entitled to know who they are? They are not allowed within XX ft of the school unless they are dropping off or picking up their child but Rachael D’s question got me wondering. I have been a bit bothered and feel that I should know incase it is one of my kids classmates parents and with the whole birthday parties and etc. I’d hate to find out the hard way it was one of my DD’s friends parents. We haven’t had a situation where they have gone to one of their houses without me BUT it is still early yet in her 12 years they will be there.

If you feel that you have as right to know, who do you ask? The principal, the teacher?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you for all your responses. And Yes Mandy B I am a Christian however I am not judging anyone simply asking a question. I also am very aware about the jail bait dating situations and I know there are 2 sides to every story, unfortunately this person will probably never be able to voice their own side, so ill probably never know.
I do frequently check the Esorn and watchdog sites. I also get notification to offenders within so many miles of my house. However my DD’s go to a private school and there is a WIDE range of area to cover, we have students come from 20 miles away to go to our school and we have been notified by the school that we have a sexual offender parent who had been volunteering during lunches but will no longer be allowed on school property unless it is pick up or drop off for their child. At this point I would feel better this parent did not have a child the same grades as my own.

You are allowed to know of any "registered" sex offender Google it online and you can find the site to look at...In all honesty I wouldn't be worried about the registered offenders! I'd be worried about that parent that has not been cought yet...

Look it up on the internet if you want to know. You can get a map and it will show you where they all live and will tell you their ages and the time of their crimes and what the crimes were. I think you'll find a lot of nothing... That's what I found.

Every community has a sex offender registry. Look it up. If they are not on that list they are not a registered sex offender they are the victim of rumors. You know, gossip, to make everyone go aahhhha ohhhh.

What I am saying is before going on a which hunt first figure out if there are actually witches in the area. Once you have found the witches then see if they have kids in your kids grade.

Problem solved.

I don't think I have the right to know. If they did their time, they have paid back society according to our current standards and that should be it. What about their child? Why should that child be shamed by everyone knowing what their parent did? What if all the sex offender had done was sleep with his girlfriend who was a year younger? Why should that ruin his child's life?

I think it depends, like others have said if it's a case of a guy having sex with an underaged girl no I wouldn't consider him a threat to my child. But if it's a child molester yea i might be a little worried but not to the point of parinoid...people make mistakes and sometimes deserve forgiveness, don't so many of you claim to be Christians? Yet you are so quick to judge and not show grace.

Sex offenders' identity is public knowledge. I'd start with doing a search of your general area & try to narrow it down that way. I'm not sure that the school is necessarily able or going to tell you who it is. Just remember that this person does have a kid at the school, and has to be picked up. Not to mention, you don't know if a) what you are hearing is fact b) what type of crime he supposedly committed and c) when & where it happened. He could've been an 18 year old having sex with a 16 year old. I don't consider that a dangerous person. Do your research before believing hearsay.

How would the school know that there is a convicted sex offender that is a parent? The teacher and principal aren't going to know. You are the only one who could go on the computer and look it up. However, be very careful. You don't know what the circumstances are. Sex offender and child molester could be two totally different things.

I totally understand.
I agree to look up sex offenders in your area.. It can also show you where they live..

Here is the deal.. A teenager that has consensual sex with a person younger than them.. can be a convicted sex offender.

He could now even be married to that woman and have children, but STILL be considered a sex offender. I cannot see that this person would be of harm to your child.

Be careful not to gossip about these things. You never know who you are speaking to or who they are friendly with.

Also do you think the child of a sex offender should be shunned? Should be shammed by the sin of his parents? Just be careful.

You should have received a letter already. As stated below, it's public information - so look it up. And make sure he is registered.

But at least you know about him. It's the ones who have not been convicted or have not registered that scare me.

His poor kid. ugh....

The school has to keep some form of confidentiality. Crazy as it is!! I bet you would be able to find out a lot of good info on the state's sex offender registry. It will tell you what the crime was and other info on it. It is free for public use. If you get info that does not sit well in your mind then you are armed to go address the principal.

It is public information and I do think we have the right to know, but I do not know if it is the school's responsibility to publish that information. I also think it depends on the offense, a 19 year old who had sex with his 17 year old girlfriend... not gonna be so stern about it.

I don't know who you would ask, but I suppose calling the school is a good place to find out. What you can do is look up all the parents you know and people in your neighborhood on your states sex offender registry for starters.

*There are 15 registered sex offenders within a 3 mile radius of my home. I am actually surprised, I figured there would be more. My last residence there were like triple that.

if they are in contact with their own children they most likely not a level 3 or 2. they are probably a level 1. they probably got convicted as a teen messing around with their SO. if i ever found out that there was a level 2 or 3 dropping children off to my daughters school i would have a word of concern with the principal and the school board.
i have a friend that is a convicted sex offender level 2 and it was from being with his 17 year old girlfriend (sexually) when he was 19. so you really need to make sure that the person is a real threat to your childs safety. most level 2's and all of level 3's are not to have contact with children here in CA. however other states have their own rules and laws on it.

You definitely have a right to know. I'm just not sure if the school is the one to give you the info though. Quite some time ago I registered online and gave my address & I get updates of anyone moving into the area, etc. who are registered sex-offenders. It gives the person's name, record, address and even a picture of the creep! The updates I get come from ____@____.com hopefully it will help you find the info you are looking for. Good luck from one Buckeye to another!!

I feel I'd have the right to know. I would ask the principal. I do not know what he is legally bound to do. Perhaps you can search this person...I believe he must be legally listed as a sex offender, so you could perhaps find his name and address online...?

A person can get on those lists for so many reasons that have nothing to do with molesting kids. I do think that sometimes the people looking at those lists just make assumptions about the people on them. I would want to know if someone was convicted of kidnapping a child and raping them, or molesting the. I would want to make sure my child was not in the same vicinity as them at any time. But I have always told the kids they do not have my permission to go with anyone that I have not specifically told them they have permission to go with. Even my BFF, they know they are not allowed to go with her or her husband, no one, that if I am having someone else pick them up I will personally tell them. They know they are not allowed and that they are supposed to tell the principle or a full time regular teacher that they know is an actual teacher about it. After I say that show about that girl being abducted by a substitute on some crime drama I told them they can't go with any teachers either.

So, if I have my child educated and they know to not go off with someone they have a better chance of not becoming a victim.
