Hi Mama's! I am looking to deliver my first baby at Baylor Hospital in Grapevine Texas. I strongly believe in natural birth and was originally planning to deliver with a birth center in Dallas, but due to a complication I am forced to deliver in a hospital. This complication shouldn't impede my chances of having a natural, normal childbirth but I have heard conflicting information about how natural friendly this hospital is. I would love to hear about your birth experiences if you birthed naturally and how willing this hospital was to allow for your wishes (No IV, No EFM, birthing positions, time with baby immediatly after deliver, feeling pressured to progress within their timeframe...etc.). Thanks so much!

What can I do next?

I delivered both my babies at Baylor Grapevine, and I had great experiences both times. I delivered naturally with both, and I never received pressure from the doctors or nurses to go for the drugs. I had fairly easy labors and no complications so I don't know if that would change things. They did put the IV in my hand, but it wasn't hooked up to anything. It was more of a precaution in case things went south and I needed to be rushed into surgery. That didn't happen so they pulled the needle out right after birth. You can ask, but that might be hospital policy due to liability in emergency situations. I dont know what EFM is so I can't answer on that.

As far as birthing positions, I think they'll listen to requests on that too. They were going to get me a birthing ball or let me sit in the tub, but my labor ended up going too quick for that. With my first, they left me alone for a while and only came back to check on me every so often so I would think you can get into whatever position you want. If you're not hooked up to an epidural, you can move around as much as you want.

They handed me my babies right away. I got to hold them while they finished stitching me up etc, but then they took the baby to clean him up...I have a friend who delivered there more recently, and she said that they now clean the babies up in the birthing room so dad ( and whoever else may be in the room) is with the baby the whole time.

The nurses there are great, and very accommodating. They do whatever you request ( as long as it is within reason and not of danger to you or the baby). I chose to have the nurse take the baby at night to the nursery so I could try to sleep, and the nurse would bring him back in every few hours to feed him. They never tried to push formula or a pacifier.

I can't say enough good things about Baylor Grapevine. If I have another baby, I will go back in a heartbeat.

I hope this helps. Good luck!

I had two kids there and both were with an epidural but both were placed on me after the apgar and I breastfed both while all of the cleanup etc happened. They took the babies after about an hour off for cleanup in the nursery and screening and then were brought to me in my room. My husband was able to follow and watch them.

I've had a natural childbirth there, two years ago, with my 3rd child, and it wasn't even what I had planned! :-) I knew going in that I did not want an epidural. But I had planned on receiving some sort of medication, however I waited too long to ask LOL. My main nurse's name was Mary. She was very friendly, supportive, helped me change into more comfortable positions (until it was time to actually push, then they insisted I be half sitting up; however I didn't ask to have it different). I did not have an IV, immediately after finishing APGAR, I was allowed to hold my baby girl and begin breastfeeding, while the Dr was still cleaning me off.
It was an amazing experience! I had never thought I would have a natural childbirth, I felt very blessed to have the nurse (I will try and find her last name and edit my post) and Dr I did to guide and encourage my husband and I! Well wishes to you and baby! :-)

I did not do nor did I want to do natural childbirth, but I was able to have all of my babies immediately after they were born. I had a c-section w/ my twins, so I did have to wait about 30 minutes. However, my husband was with them the entire time and they brought them to me before I left the recovery area. They were very encouraging on letting me keep them with me at all times. I did have to let them go to the nursery twice a day for change over, but they were gone about an hour or less if I remember right.
I wish you all the best with your upcoming birth and child.
