Shark Teeth

I help my five year old son with his teeth brushing everyday and on Saturday I noticed something very distrubing that I had not noticed before. Behind his baby teeth, there was the beginning of a permanent tooth growing! My little boy looked like a shark! I looked it up online and discovered that it was indeed called Shark Teeth. The article said that sometimes the dentist has to pull the baby teeth and sometimes the permanent tooth pushes the baby teeth out. Anyone have any experience with this?!

So What Happened?

Well - I took him to the dentist and he recommended extraction. By the time I did take him, another tooth had began to come in, so the dentist wanted two removed. They said they could do that while we were in the office or we could reschedule. I was afraid that my anxiety would transfer to my son, so I opted for them to do it while we were there. When Trent came out of the exam room, he smiled at me (sans two bottom teeth). He told me he was very brave. I'm glad he was, because Momma was about to fall apart! *smile*

I was that way and so is my son. His dentist said not to worry about it; the baby tooth will eventually let go. Many other children in my son's class had the same thing happen.

Hi yes, my son too had "shark teeth" nothing to worry about. The dentist did say that the teeth were supposed to push the baby teeth out but since they grew in behind that didnt happen. maybe in your case this might still happen. We eventually had to have the teeth pulled and all is fine.

Yep.
My daughter had that. Unfortunately, the new teeth were growing just behind the babies so they never did push them out and barely even made them loose, so I finally asked the dentist to pull the babies out. Not really a big deal-- my daughter was a trooper. She got 2 new Webkinz from me for being so brave!

My daughter had 2 of her teeth come in this way, and the first one really freaked me out. Our dentist wasn't concerned, and the baby tooth eventually fell out. What I did notice was that for a while the baby tooth was pretty loose, then as the permanent tooth grew in some more, the baby tooth became less wiggly, so when your son's tooth is loose, I would encourage him to wiggle it a lot, or eat apples and other chewy things to help it along.

Has happened to my son a few times. The baby teeth came out on their own eventually.

My daughter had that happen with her first perm tooth. Don't get alarmed. At her check -up our dentist assured me that it normally corrects itself. One perm tooth takes the place of two baby teeth. It will typically push out the baby teeth and then make its way into the correct position. Have your dentist take a look at his next check-up if you are concerned.

My sons friend had this in his four front teeth....the back ones grew in, the baby ones loosed up and were out in a few months and the ones behind were there. Just make sure you brush real well since it is hard to get the teeth behind the teeth. Call your pedi dentist but I have heard and seen it.

I am going through this right now with my 7 yo son. His "big" tooth is about completely in and his baby tooth, while loose, is still there (lower front tooth). I called my dentist office and they told him to "work" the baby tooth as much as possibe and if it's not out in a few weeks, it might need to be pulled :-(

My oldest who is now 16 had this problem as well. I think he may have only pulled 2 of his own teeth. The rest the dentist had to do. My 10yo dtr has had this problem as well a couple of times. Now we are looking at some of her teeth that are not loose and none growing behind them. These are her baby teeth on the bottom front. We go to the dentist on Wednesday so we will see what happens.

Yes, we went through this last year - I ask mamasource about it too. According to my dentist, It's very common and they will only pull a baby tooth in rare circumstances such as if the gum becomes inflamed or infected, etc.

Just brush well and encourage your son to work on loosening those baby teeth with his tongue.

i haven't had any experience with it but the dentist told me that sometimes certain foods will help loosen them up, like apples, chewy bread etc etc. if you have to have them pulled you can always talk to your dentist about laughing gas or something similar. my son had to have a tooth pulled and they used laughing gas because he was very nervous about it. he ended up helping the dentist by wiggling his head back and forth to get them out..he also laughed thru the whole thing...lol

This happened with my now 18 yr old when she was about 6 or 7. She had a permanent tooth growing in behind one of her bottom front baby teeth. I asked her dentist what he suggested and he said to leave the baby tooth alone that the adult tooth would most likely push it out but that if the adult came in more than half way and the baby tooth hadn't moved at all then we would need to pull the baby one. Luckily, it did come out on it's own but it was a close call. I was starting to get concerned because the adult tooth looked like it was growing in with a slant toward the inside of the mouth but it straightened out once the baby tooth was gone. I would just go with your dentist's recommendation as to what to do. Good luck!!

This happened to me back in the fall, and I freaked out. My dentist, however, wasn't very concerned. He kept telling me to call back if the baby teeth hadn't fallen out in x weeks - it started at 5 weeks, but I was calling back every week, I think.

Anyway, somewhere around the 4th week, the first tooth fell out, followed quickly by the second. His permanent teeth were kinda far back, since that's where they grew in, but the dentist said they would push forward and line up with his front teeth. And now about 4 months later, you can't even tell they weren't there all along.

I know it seems freaky and the thoughts of orthadontia have probably started rolling in your head, but try to calm down and give it a month. My son's baby teeth weren't even loose when the adult teeth started growing in! If, in a month, there's no change in the baby teeth, call the dentist. Until then, teach your son how to wiggle his tooth and try to get him to eat lots of apples (advice from our dentist).

I hope this helps! If you have any other questions, feel free to contact me :)

When I was around 6, my parents had to have the dentist pull a few of my baby teeth because the permanent teeth were coming in behind them. The baby teeth were just not loosening up in time. It was NOT traumatic for me. As I recall, it was quick. They numbed me up first, got the baby teeth out, and I was waiting for the tooth fairy. :) I have been kind of prepping myself and my seven year old for this possibility since she has not lost 1 tooth yet, but thus far I haven't seen any permanents surfacing.

Also, I have a friend whose son had this issue. They did nothing and just let the baby teeth loosen up on their own. His permanent teeth were already fully grown behind them. Because of this, his teeth (permanent) were severely crooked because they did not have the chance to move in to the proper positions since the baby teeth were there.

The dentist trip is no big deal, and from talking to other people- I gather that this is common.
