Shorten Nap or Later Bedtime for 2Yo?

My son takes a 3hr nap during the day, and used to sleep about 12hrs at night. That seems to be decreasing. We've already moved his bedtime back to about 7:45pm (used to be 7pm) a couple of months ago. He wakes up around 7am which varies and sometimes depends on his younger brother. The reason I ask about bedtime is that he takes about 30-45min to fall asleep. He's not crying or anything, just rolling around in his crib or talking or singing. Partly, I think he just needs time to settle down before he can fall asleep. We do a bedtime routine, which includes about 20-30minutes of books before going in his crib. I try to get him down for nap at 12:30pm, but sometimes he doesn't get down until 1:30pm because of our schedule or if he goes to mother's day out. Any thoughts?

What can I do next?

Immediate nap after Mothers day out and same time give or take everyday. If he falls asleep fine, if he doesnt thats ok too. Its just for rest you dont have to sleep to rest! I let my kids even play for 2 hours in their room alone, its still rejuventaes them for the day. If he is sleeping cut it back from 3 hours to 1.5 to 2. If he doesnt nap that day put him to bed 1 hour ealier. Its a jugglin act but my kids dont nap i put them to bed at 6 or 7, if they do they get to stay up till 9 but nap is only 2 hours at most

I am surprised he still sleep 3 hours. My oldest was done with naps earlyier than his friends. Poor me! lol. Depends on what you want from him to what you decide to do. I just want to warn you that if you decided to shorten his nap to get him to sleep quicker he will have cranky times towards the evenings as he adjusts. Sometimes I wondered if I could stand my son the last few hours before bed. lol. Good luck!

My son just turned two and has started doing this the last few nights. We have just let him be, and laughed at what we hear. I am treating this like a phase and letting him rest, because I know that he is tired. At daycare he gets 1.5-2 hours of nap, at home, 1.5-3 hours and the length of naps don't seem to affect the nighttime chatter right now. He is happy, not crying, and seems to be enjoying his alone time.

It sounds like he is under tired for bedtime. You can choose to shorten nap, or go later bedtime, perhaps. 3 hr nap probably is a bit long, and he may be trading night sleep for day sleep. Based on our little guy, he was doing about 2 hrs at that stage; I would have to wake him, or he would not be ready for bed and have small wakings at night.

My 2.5 yr old daughter is frequently sitting/laying in bed talking to herself in the dark an hour after we put her to bed. Even if she's not asleep yet, she is resting so that is good. [She goes to bed 8ish and wakes at 7:30. She (usually) naps 2 hrs in the afternoon.] I wouldn't worry if I were you. Also, it's okay if naptime is not at the exact same time everyday--within an hour of variance is reasonable, and it can help b/c he is flexible. Sounds like things are great! way to go Mom.

I think the bedtime between 7-8 is fine but the nap would definitely have been too long with our younger children to get them down at a reasonable time. I think 1 1/2 - 2 hour nap is plenty and won't interfer with sleep. Anything longer he just won't be sleepy that early.
