Should I Be Worried About an Extra Small Adult Tooth?

My 8-1/2 year old son has lost several baby teeth and his adult teeth have grown in normally, although slightly crooked. He lost his far left incisor (tooth next to the canine tooth) about 3 months ago. He's finally getting the new tooth in, but it is super tiny. It's about 1/3 the size of the baby tooth. Should I be concerned? Neither my husband nor I have a history of tooth abnormalities.

We recently moved to a new city and he isn't due for a dental checkup until October. He did have x-rays last year and the dentist never said he saw anything abnormal in his front teeth. There was an issue with a back molar growing in crooked, but it corrected itself.

Anybody have a similar experience? What did you do about it?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you everybody for your input on my question! I took our son to the dentist today, and she basically said the same think A.K. answered. It's a peg lateral tooth. Based on x-rays, it's the only one that is this way. He'll get a cap in a couple years after the other adult teeth around it have come in. Nothing to worry about. Phew!

I would take him to an orthodontist. I paid for three sets of braces and the difference it made in my children's health has been well worth it.

we just took our son to an orthodontist adn the detailed panaranic exrays are like none ive ever seen at a regular dentist. I'm wondering if maybe this tooth doesn't have enough room to come in and is being squeezed so that more than normal is submerged. Depending on if he will lose another beside it soon or if the ones areound are all adult he might need braces. I would think a few months wouldn't matter too much but this is the age now that kids are getting their first sets of ortho work.
I am not a dentist so obviously use your discression .

Just make sure his last x-rays are transferred to the new dentist for the October check up. By then it may not even be an issue and even if it is, at his age the dentist will be able to correct and/or make a recommendation for a specialist.

Blessings....

I agree...8.5 years is old enough to be going for a consult to the orthodontist. Much more advanced panoramic ex-rays of the mouth. Please select a doctor who you trust and has a great reputation.

I would take my son to the orthodontist - they do wonderful screenings and x-rays...my son was 9 when he got braces and 10.5 when he got them off - made a HUGE world of difference for him - confidence, etc. is there a possibility that he may have to get another set in a few years...

Congrats on your move! Hope you find a ton of great things to do!!

My son has one of those teeth, in the same place as your son's! We don't know what caused it, either, and his dentists have never been alarmed (he's 16 now, and we've switched dentists 3 times; insurance issues). He'll need braces soon, and I think they might put a crown on his little sliver tooth, so it's the same size and shape as the others, but I'm not sure. I guess we'll find out.

Go to a dentist.
One of our children had and extra tooth. It was removed.
Later braces were in order.
Non of this is urgent, but a dentist should explain it all to you and
advise what to do.

Hello, I'm a dentist...it's nothing urgent, when he has his checkup in October they can check the tooth and advise you...when he is older(if it is what we call a"peg"lateral) he may after braces get a dental implant or a crown to make the tooth appear the right size. I wonder if the other lateral on top is coming in the same way or only one?
I'd second the idea of an orthodontist around this age, if there is any need for braces. But you can always go after his October visit to the general dentist.
