Silly Question for Moms with Little Girls....

So I have twin girls, 11 months old. I also have a 3 1/2 year old so all this 'girl' stuff is a little new to me. I have a double duty with it all too! So my first question is when did you cut your daughter's hair and how? I took my son for his first haircut when he was 10 months old and kept cutting it because he's a boy - I wanted him to have short hair. His hair straight so the long look was not working for him. My girls' hair is straight and thin - pretty normal hair for 11 months old I think but it's starting to get long on the sides growing over their ears. My husband thinks they look 'unkempt" because of their hair and I'm trying to tell him that we just need to wait for it to grow out and that when girls grow their hair out it goes through an "in between" stage that usually is not that great. So I don't want to cut it because I want their hair to grow long but maybe it could uses a trim? Maybe if I trim it and keep it short now it will allow it get to be all the same length? Someone also told me that if I cut it now it will grow in thicker, any truth behind that? Do you take your girls somewhere to have their cut or do you do it?
My second silly question is what order to you layer clothes when little girls where tights? So I have a couple jumper type dresses for the girls where they where a onesie type shirt under them. Do you put the tights on first and then snap the onesie over the tights or put the onesie on first? Thank you!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Wow! Thanks for all the responses. I think I will hold off on cutting their hair for now. Their bangs are not in their eyes yet but I did start to pull them back in barrets. My girls have left them alone but I worry about sending them to daycare with these tiny barrets in their hair. I worry one will fall out and another kid will pick it up and swallow it. These tiny ones are the only ones that will stay in their babyfine hair at this point. Headbands do not work with twins. I have tried the cute ones with the bows or floweres- many times - and they always try to take them off each other ;) As for my question on the tights...very interesting that the responses were split! I guess there is no right way. I have been putting the onesie over the tights but that only looks cute with certain onesie/tight color combinations. And for the record, I have only put tights on them twice for special occasions - this is not an everyday thing.
Thanks again!

I personally wouldn't cut their hair. I don't like bangs so I would never cut then on my kids unless they really really wanted them. I think thin stringy hair looks cute short but short to me is below the ears so I would just let it keep growing.

Yes, you have to wait through the silly "baby mullet" phase. In another year, it will look really cute. :) Wet it with water and comb it behind their ears with a little mousse, etc, if you want it to lay more flat around the ears.

It will NOT grow in thicker if you cut it. It'll grow exactly the same as it's growing right now, and you will AGAIN be faced with the "make it through this" stage. Trust me. Just let it grow! :) I have two girls...six and 18 months...and my mother is a veteran retired hairdresser.

I think it looks better to snap the onesie over the tights, and it keeps the tights from falling down between the knees.

I guess after reading all of the replies.... The best answer is that there is not a right answer. I cut my son's hair at one year of age, did not do my daughters until age three. When hers grew out, I just used the stretchy headbands that went all around her head to keep her hair pulled back. As soon as it got long enough for a pony tail, that is what we did.

As far as onsies/tights.... I always did the opposite of some. I onesied, snapped and then the tights over the ones. I guess I always felt that the onsie was like underwear and should not be seen. I also tended to use a lot of ruffled or Gymboree' tights that had cute things on the butt or matched the outfit. Can't be hiding the butt of those tight$ with a silly onsie.... I also always bought my tights big enough that they NEVER slipped down and did not need a onsie to hold them up.

I have a 15 mo old. She has fine hair that is getting long, but she also has ringlets. So I am going to let it grow. :) But having straight, thin hair myself, it does look better when it stays trimmed. Otherwise, it gets stringy. I don't think a little trim would hurt. Also, there is no truth that the hair will grow back thicker. It just looks that way because the dead ends are chopped off. Gives fine, straight hair more body.
With my little girl, I snap the onesie first, then do the tights. I think that waistband on tights is irritating.
Hope this helps!

If the onesie is part of the outfit, I'd definitely put it over the tights... I find it really annoying when little girls tights are constantly falling down. The onesie keeps the tights up. Heck, even as a teen/adult, I still sometimes wore cheerleading trunks over my tights/hosiery to keep them up!

Nope, no truth to that. If cutting hair would make it thick, we would all have thick hair.

I always cut my kids' hair myself. Saved a lot of money that way.

"Unkempt?" At 10 months old? Can I respectfully suggest that your husband lighten up a bit? I hope he doesn't dwell on their appearance that much as they grow. That's unhealthy for girls.

Give it a trim if it will make you guys happy. It's only hair. Hair grows.

K., you are sweet - I'm not trying to be curt to you, but your husband irritated the heck out of me.

My daughter is 18 months and I first cut her hair at a year old. She has very fine, very straight hair and I have found that regularly trimming the ends slightly has helped her hair to start to thicken up and also grow faster.

I did have them cut bangs in for her because I can't stand seeing her hair down in her eyes....drives me nuts!! She will not keep a headband on, so there really isn't any way for me to keep them out of her eyes without bangs. I figure we can grow out the bangs when she's a little older if I want to .

As for the tights....I always put the tights over the onesie.

With my oldest we cut her hair at 9 months, but she has abnormal hair growth and it grows uncontrollable and I just couldn't take it anymore. She has bangs and now I just cut them at home until she is old enough to actually care about her hair.

With my youngest I have yet to cut it at 19 months, and just pull it up into one pony tail on top or two tiny piggy tails on the side. (My husband hates both of them, but it keeps it out of her eyes). She barely has hair and what she does have is very thin and fine-total opposite of her sister.

Also with the jumpers. I put the onesie over the tights, it just seems to help hold the tights in place better, but I have seen both ways. It is just a matter of preference I think.

I always cut my kids hair myself when they were younger. With the boys it is a boy cut as you described. With the girls I cut to the average. In other words the really short hairs I left alone, the long hairs were cut to the middle. When they were really little you could call it layers but by the time they were one it was heading towards a long bob.

I had hairy girls, by the time they were one they were sporting pony tails. :)

Oh tights over onesies. That way you can pull down the tights without undoing anything for a quick diaper check. :)

My daughter had fine hair just like your girls. She went through a stage where yes,it looked kind of scraggily=) Now she has shoulder length hair without bangs. It was totally worth it. She is in dance and it is so easy to do a bun and wear it the way they want for the recitals.Until it fills in get some bow barettes or pull it up on top with a rubberband. Just keep working with it. hang in there=)

Cute questions! Our daughter was not one to allow barrettes or headbands when she was young and I hated when her hair was in her eyes. So I always kept her bangs trimmed. When the length was looking a little straggly, I would very slightly trim the ends so there was a nice line at the bottom. But I'm a former hair stylist, so there ya go! It's almost like I just couldn't keep my hands off it, really.

On the flip side, my SIL let her daughter's hair just grow and grow. It looks good now at 6 yo, but probably didn't look good until she was about 4 yo. And yes, it did look straggly to me. There's really no right or wrong, it's just a personal preference. (And no, there is no truth to 'cutting it now will make it grow in thicker.' However, when hair has a nice trim at the bottom, it does appear to be thicker than if you have various lengths going at once)

At 6, now our daughter has all one length, long hair. It was a bugger to grow those bangs out, but she did need them when she was a baby/toddler.

Finally, I always put the tights over the diaper, then the onesie over the tights.

My daughter is 3 years old.. for a while I cut her hair on my own... I would just trim the bangs while she sat in her high chair... she was really good and would sit still.. however I'm certainly not a hairdresser...so last year .... when she was 2 we started taking her to a hairdresser that my husband knows... she was afraid at first... but the woman was good with her... she has bubbles, toys, and a dog.. we would go every 6 weeks or so... and sometimes the hairdressers would sing songs like Barney... which worked well... and she felt more comfortable..

onesie on first and then tights over that

We didn't cut DD's hair until she was 3 year old. Mainly because she was born with an amazing head of hair & it was so beautiful & kind of her "claim to fame", so let it get really long. I finally got sick of it, it was butt length when we finally cut it, and now we let it grow out & then cut it before summer. We took her to one of those kiddie hair salons.

As far as the clothing, I didn't do tights that much because of our weather, but when I did, it was tights under onesie & jumper over it.

Hope this helps :-)

I think you are looking for one right answer....there isn't one. :)

I have two little girls. Both have the thin stringy hair, no curls. The first didn't get her hair cut until she was 3. I kept it long and no bangs. She loves it and it compliments her face. She has also let me style it since it was long enough to put a top knot in.

My youngest is 19 months and it is just getting long enough to go over her ears. We don't plan on cutting it for a long time.

We took our oldest to my stylist (at Fantastic Sams) and she sat on my lap. We got a certificate and a swatch of hair to keep. She loves to get her hair cut now, about once every 6 weeks (around my haircuts).

Tights: I prefer putting them on over the diaper and then fastening the onesie top over them. This keeps them up and from sliding down. It also keeps my youngest from taking them off.

Have fun with your little girls. It is SOOOOO much fun. :)

Tights first then snap the onsie.
The other way the tights fall down and I don't like the look of the stretched out top of the tights-sloppy looking, imo. ;)

My DD got her 1st haircut at 3 (I just trimmed the split ends off).
DS got his the day before his 1st birthday.
Both for the same reasons you stated.

When my DD was that age, my mom made her several super soft stretchy headbands w/ pretty little flowers or ribbons.
I also always put a touch of lotion in her hair to be able to style it.
HTH!

My daughter was pretty bald for a long time so her first haircut was not until a few months before she turned 3! At that time it was starting to go into her eyes and we were going to be in a wedding in a couple of months so we got her evened out and trimmed up. Since then I've gotten her hair trimmed every few months to keep her bangs out of her eyes and to help distinguish her bangs from the rest of her hair.

As for the tights, I always put them under the onesie so help hold the tights up.

I didn't cut my daughter's hair until she was almost three years old. I would put little baretts in her hair to make it look cute while it was growing out. She got used to the baretts and never pulls them out. She now has beautiful long hair that is all the way down her back. She never wore tights when she was a baby so I can't help there but I would agree with Lee that you snap the onesie on the outside to hold up the tights.

Tights, panties or onsies, then dress. That way the tights will not bag down in the crotch.

Cutting hair or not cutting hair has little to do with how it grows according to professionals I have asked. Hair grows according to the genetics that govern that ability. One of my friends had 4 girls and not one of them had hair even touching their collars at 2 1/2. They each asked her at some point why their friends all had hair and they didn't.

Trimming her hair will only make it look more fashionable. It may be that it needs to have a little pony tail on top or tiny little pig tails as the hair gets a bit longer to keep it looking more tidy. Just put a tiny bit of hair gel on your hands as you are brushing it and it will lay down and have less static. That will make it look tidier too.

We cut it so it would grow out better with one dd, the other had wavy/curly hair so didn't matter as much. I'm not good at cutting hair so had it done by my stylist or at a kids place. Onesie first then tights, I agree that you don't want to see the onesie over the tights! When potty training use baby legs legwarmers instead of tights, much easier.

My oldest did not get a haircut until 4. My youngest was a little younger but not that much younger.

I have always left it to a professional. I would never want to butcher my daughters hair and have it not grow out even etc. I think it would be penny wise and pound foolish. It all evens out in the end.

I also want to set an example to my girls that hair is not do-it-yourself. Maybe I ought to explain that one. My oldest daughter has a friend who is constantly cutting her own hair and has been since about 3 years of age when she CHOPPED it off (yes the day before picture day...) I've always told my girls to leave it to the professionals. If I were to cut it than I wouldn't be following my own advice.

I have an almost 3 yr old DD and we've never cut her hair. It's wavy and has naturally grown into really pretty long layers so we see no need to cut it. We generally pull up the part on top into a small pony tail holder to keep it out of her eyes. I think it's really pretty. :)

Diaper, tights, then onesie.

Can you put a head band on them to hold their hair back? Or barrettes? I gave my daughter bangs around 6 months and before she turned two I cut it to a "bob" style just above her shoulders. My daughter was born with a full head of thick wavy/curly hair. At that age it was easier for me to keep it short. The barrettes would start to pull too much from the weight of it and I was worried about hair loss. She is 5 now and still has bangs, but I have been letting her grow it longer. As long as she takes care of it then she can have it long. She does pull it back in a pony tail at school so it is not hanging in her face.
From my own experience I would take them to a salon (even for a trim) to get them used to going. I have always done my daughters hair and now she won’t let anyone touch it.
As for your other question I could never figure it out either, LOL.
