Similar to iPod Touch?

My 8 year old wants an iPod touch for Christmas. I have one and it is great, but I am not willing to buy such an expensive item for a child. Does anyone know of a cheaper knockoff version ($100.00 or under) that has a touch screen and you can play games and music on it? I've been looking around online at MP3 players, but aren't sure if you can play games on them?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for the refurbished iPod idea. I might try that.

My 10 year old wants one too-it's all he says he wants. But then in the next breath-he said I would have to get one for my 11 year old as well because he doesn't want to share-which is understandable.
I'll be watching the Black Friday ads as it doesn't seem like there are too many alternatives-aside from a tablet.

Nothing will come close to the iPod touch.

Did you know you can buy reburbished ipods on the Apple website? They are a lot less $$ since they are used but they are completely checked over and are in great working order. I believe they still have a warranty also. Just a thought since your son/daughter really wants the ipod and there really aren't any good alternatives I can think of!

Why don't you check out craigslist? I know in my area there are a couple already up for sale, also check ebay or amazon, sometimes they have the refurbished ones (I think apple might even sell refurbished) worst case scenario you could always upgrade yours and give her your old one for christmas? Good luck!

If you have one you must know. The games on the ipod touch are free to $3. vs something like a DS when game are $20 to 30. If you have wireless internet it is also a little computer, a DVD, music and well as a video and educational games. Compared to a DS which lots of kids have. An ipod touch is a great value when you can do so much on it. Go less on the next birthday or ask a grandparent to go in with you.

I just saw an add for the Knook from Barnes and Noble.. it showed people surfing the web, playing movies, games, music, etc. I have no idea how much it is, but that may be an alternative.

I haven't gotten an iPod, but in general I've had GREAT luck with refurbed electronics! Personally I'd probably upgrade MY iPod and hand the old one down to the kiddo and we'd both be happy.....

When my older son got one a few years ago for Christmas we had the grandparents and his godfather go in together on it and then that was pretty much all he got from my side of the family. He loves it. However, we made him wait until he was 12-13 because I wanted to make sure he was responsible enough to take care of such an expensive item. Now my 12 year old wants one and I am waiting to see how he handles his new phone before we spend that much on another electronic item. I like the refurbished idea though; I didn't know about that. My younger son got an MP3 player when he was about 8 and it's sitting in a drawer unused. It was a waste of money IMO. We had trouble downloading music and using it. We got him an iPod shuffle instead.

When my children want to buy something that I believe is too expensive, I make them buy it themselves. If you only want to spend $100 then tell her you are willing to give her $100 towards the purchase of the ipod and she'll have to pay for the rest. I've done this when my children wanted DSs and the bigger Lego items. It teaches them responsibility and the value of money.

My friend already bought her son a Samsung galaxy (I think) but it wasn't under $100--but cheaper than an iPod Touch...that's why she bought it.

I agree with mommyof1, you'd just be wasting your money purchasing something else. I wish Apple would come out with something for kids not so expensive...ugh!

Polaroid makes one that is on sale for $60. I don't know much about it, so you might want to look up some reviews on it.
