Hello Mama's and Dads,
Anyone every given their child Singular? My daughter has been sick with bronchitis 4x this year and they want her to take Singular (chewable) and I dont know if I want her on this.

1. Has anyone given this to their children? How did you like it? Any side effects?
2. Did anyone use other forms besides medicating thier children? A specialist to find out what the actual problem might be? I want to heal her, not cover up the problem with medications.

Help!!!

Thanks :)

What can I do next?

My son has been on and off of singular since he was 4 (he is now 10). He has asthma like conditions that are seasonal. We have had no side effects and it does keep his lungs clear and the cough is gone. He is able to participate in sports better and run faster for longer periods of time because of it. He was not bad enough to use any other medications or even any specialists. A couple of his friends also take it for asthma, and they have had no adverse effects either.

Good luck!

My son was on singulair when he was about 3.5 (he was on it for maybe 6 mths). I was told that we would either see a big difference or none at all. It helped, but nothing that was dramatic. My son had Allergy induced Asthma.. and doing some allergy screens he wasn't really showing up with walloping alleries!

When they just kept putting him on more and more medicine, we went the 'natural' route and tried a pediatric chiropractor based on seeing another kid with HORRIBLE asthma, never having attacks. It worked.. my son, now five, hasn't had a neb, steroid or attack since March of 2005.

We definitely didn't have any bad reactions from it, but like you, I wanted to help his case, rather than just treating every symptom he had. He was so OVERLY medicated and just couldn't recover anymore.

Email if you want to chat.

Our daughter tried both Zyrtec and Sinular for chronic sinus infections which often led to bronchitis. She didn't get much relief from them. I think her issues are all allergy related but she didn't respond to either medication. You're right about trying to find out what's causing the bronchitis. Does she start out with a runny nose, gets the post nasel drip and then starts to cough? You might consider taking her to an allergist and/or an ENT. That's the recent advice we got from our doctor - our daughter sees the allergist next week!

(We had no side effects with either medication.)

Good luck!

My son is on this medication. It has worked wonders for what is called cough varient asthma. He does not have the typical wheezing and would not respond well to inhalers or nebulizer treatments. His cough sounds like croup (seal bark) and loud.
It would turn many heads in public, and would draw negative attention to him at school. For controling this, it was great. Prior to this medication, he would typically miss 7-10 days of school per year due to the lung spasms caused from a typical upper resp virus.
I would recommend seeing a pediatric pulmonologist for any recurring problem that involves the lungs. I found, in my experience that the GP's are quick to medicate, without really offering alternatives. The alternative would be that when the cough would not clear, antiboitics would be given because they would assume an infection was causeing the cough that would not go away. I consulted a pulmonologist and after much trial and a lot of error, took the singular as the only thing that would work.
My son has been doing so well for so long now, I'm considering taking him off of it to see how he responds. He has had some conduct problems that may/may not be associated with this medication.
Talk to a doctor to weigh the pros and cons, and double check that there is not an underlying issue that may be going undiagnosed.
I would proceed with caution, and get another opinion.

This is a response that I gave several months ago to a person who asked the same question but it was related to asthma. I know that my friends response applies to all respitory problems. There has been a great deal of research on the connection of home cleaning products and children with respitory problems like asthma, bronchitis, pnuemonia, and allergies. I have been giving my 8 month old vitamin suppliments for two months now and her immune system is pretty strong considering she is in day care 4 days a week. I am doing all I can to avoid drugs for anything thing she gets. So far so good. Let me know if you want more information. I can send you some research info and Deb's contact info.

Hi,

Name is Deb Villarese. My heart poured out to you when I read what you are going through with your child. I can especially relate to the drugs and their side effects.

I know will sound like an old story, and yet it also will be a very sad story because over the past 25 years, they, the medical industry still hasn’t come up with any solutions in young children

By the time my son Todd was 1 year old, he had been hospitalized 5 different times with the diagnosis of “pneumonia.” Back then, they wouldn’t let the parents spend the night and the visiting hours were very limited. By the time he was 18 months, my pediatrician suggested allergy testing. ( the kind that they scratch their little body and put the “toxins” in the scratch.) They normally didn’t do it to kids that young, but he was certainly a concern for all of us. The testing actually gave him an asthma attack and he was administered a shot of adrenalin which they really didn’t like doing too often.

Todd was the youngest child to ever be put on an inhaler. I had taught him at age 15 months to self propel and suck in the medicine that was put in the small apparatus. This was long before the portable nebulizer had been made available to the general public. Many times I believe he was admitted in the hospital because he just needed a breathing treatment.

Along with the drugs that kept him up all night, caused very labored breathing, and made him look like the “Pillsbury Doughboy” because it caused such puffiness, I was instructed to remove everything from his room. The only thing in his room was his crib ( which I wiped down every day with bleach water, the vinyl pull down shades, and the wood floor. He had no toys, books, games, and even his blanket and sheets had to be washed daily. The Doctors had me convinced that I was not a “good enough” housekeeper, especially with a child who had such breathing challenges.

We even sold the house we lived in and bought a brand new house thinking that there were some mold issues in the old house. ( I might add, this was in the early 70o’s before mold issues were even talked about)

Because of moving to a new area, I found a new pediatric allergist. He suggested I was creating a toxic environment because of all the chemicals that I was using to “obsessively” clean my house. Bleach, Sparkle, Windex, and even the laundry detergent had a lot of fillers. He suggested that I find a person who sold Shaklee products because they were all natural, did not have any toxic residue. I have to admit that it made a huge difference when I finally found them and started using them. Instead of getting sick every 3-4 weeks, he could last for 3-4 months. Dr Lin was Chinese and he said that all the chemical cleaners were causing a break down in a very week immune system. He told me that allergies were a sign of a weak immune system and that he knew his system was compromised because he was sick with lung problems just way too much.

I then started doing my own research. I found that the thing that built the immune system strong was food……vitamins, minerals and protein. He was a normal 7 year old and his diet was about what tasted good, not what was good for him.

I took him to a Doctor 3 hours away and he coincidently suggested that I put him on a mico-biotic diet in order to nourish his body better and in addition, he wanted me to put him on supplements. The crazy part was that he was going to sell me Shaklee again. These 2 doctors never knew each other were over 150 miles away from each other, one was from China, the other was from Egypt. I decided it was Devine intervention.

I got my own products, followed the program and the diet. A lot has changed since then, but I am here to tell you, that this story has helped 100’s of Moms over the years because it all made sense. Today, My son gets sick occasionally with a virus. He is a pilot for a major airline and lives a normal life.

It changed my life and as a matter of fact, it made such a difference in my life, I felt obligated to tell others. I have a similar story with my daughter with ear infections.

I loved how it worked and how I was able to help others and change their lives for the better which the doctors are so unable to do because they are dealing with drugs and never think to ask about the environments they are living in.

I have now sold the products for 25 years. I market them because I love them and because I can make a difference in peoples lives.

My 3 and 1/2 year old son is on Singulair. He has heavy seasonal allergies in the spring and fall. He took Singulair last spring for the first time and then we've started again just recently. We give it to him every other day. It has helped him greatly with his breathing along with a nebulizer. He takes it in a powder form that we put in his milk at dinner. We have not noticed any side effects from taking it. I was(am) concerned as well but seeing how better my son's breathing has gotten makes me more comfortable with him taking it. Good luck.

my daughter gets bronchiolitis every year since she was 6 mths. She was placed ona nebulizer and was given the meds Albuterol and Pulmicort. These have helped greatly with her breathing and controlling the bronchiolitis. Last year it was determined she may be pre-astmatic and now has to take preventitive pulmicort daily frmo October-April. It seemed to control it last year, but it was only for 1/2 the time that it was implemented. So we shall see this year. But I have never heard of singular.
