Our school has been plagued withthis horrible cold/flu. I has been hitting the kiddos hard. All three of mine have had double ear infections and massive sinus infections. Mlovely DH thought it be best for them to sleep in with me the whole time they were sick. Not really, but he would stay up later then me and the boys would watch cartoons in my room cause they felt icky. normally he would have none of it and move the older two back into their room.

My question is now, How can you treat a sinus infection without antibiotics? i use the netty pot. and menthol has been all our house has smelled of for over a month now. anyone out there have any home remedies? I hate taking antibiotics for many reasons is why i ask.

Thank you again...I have posted a million today so this will be my last:) hopefully

My daughter (9)got her first sinus infection this year. I took her to the pediatrician, who told us about the neti pot. BUt, instead of the neti pot, she told us to use the sinus rinse. It's in a bottle that you can control the amount of liquid/saline going in. She said it was less awkward to use on kids, than the neti pot. I used it on my daughter and it got better without antibiotics! We were dilligent about it and it seemed to really do the trick! But, if the saline rinse/neti pot just isn't cutting it, antibiotics may be necessary. I just got my first sinus infection of my life, too, this year. It was horrible!! I was miserable. I think kids are more resilient, but they may be pretty miserable, too. I don't like having to use antibiotics unless absolutely necessary, too. Ugh. I wish you a more healthier spring!!! :)

The netty pot is great. I always use saline in squeeze bottle that I get at the pharmacy and then a bulb syringe to suck out the goop. I find using the bulb syringe really works. Plus the older kiddos I make them blow their nose ALL the time. And when the nose is really blocked some Benadryl.
Good luck.

Kiddo fought a sinus infection for almost a month during the holidays - he finally really started to tank and we got antibiotics. (Our "first" prescription, and he's three!) The ped also gave me something to spray up his nose once a day - a little pre-measured squirt into each nostril. Within two days he was almost his old self again. I wish I hadn't waited.

Be careful with neti pots. My ENT told me that In some people it can cause ear infections, especially when one blows his or her nose immediately after.

Apparently, it can force water into the middle ear. It may be helpful to try a sinus rinse (Amazon and drugstores sell one for kids called NasalCare that is a little easier to use and won't cause re-infection.)

This has been a really tough season for colds/flu. If your little one has multiple ear infections you may also want to get them checked for enlarged adenoids and tonsils.

My son has had multiple sinus/ear infections and was sent to an imaging lab to get a CT scan. His adenoids and tonsils are huge and seem to be preventing him nasal cavity and middle ear from draining completely which just causes another ear infection.

I hear you about the antibiotics but if they are in pain, not treating the infection properly will only cause things to get worse down the line.

I treated my sinus infection (I assume it was, I didn't go in) with homeopathic meds. Ferrous Sulfate every 2 hours knocked mine out within 2 days, along with another for congestion. Sorry I can't remember the name of that one, but you'd get help with that anywhere they sell the tabs (Super Supplements, Central Market, etc.)

My neti pot is my best friend when I have a stuffy nose for any reason. I also use echinacea to boost my immune system. Lots of cranberry, orange, and grapefruit juice for extra vitamin C.

Start pumping them full of Emergen-C. I get it and mix it into smoothies when my kids are sick. My ultimate anti-oxidant/vitamin C mixture is a cup of blueberries, a banana, two spoonfuls of yogurt (I use all natural vanilla, but you can use whatever type you might have on hand), and 2-3 packets of Emergen-C pre-mixed in water. I use enough water/Emergen-C mixture to cover the blueberries & banana. I hope your family gets well. As much as I hate medicine sometimes there really is no avoiding it. We are lucky to have it, and as long as you don't over-use medication, like taking it when it is not necessary, it really can be a life-saver.

my acupuncturist says he has good treatments for ear infections. they don't have to use needles either.

stay away from mucous-causing foods like dairy, oranges, and bananas. sugar also causes more phlegm.

For a mother who does not want those disgusting non curable allopathic medicines she must become an adequet homeopath. The Prescriber by John Hodge Clarke a very difficult Englishman whose writings on Homeopathy are still quoted wrote this work in the early 20th century.
I used Dr. Barry Rose extensively. Also English and likely still living.
After that for sore bodies and so on I pick Asa Hershfeld a Canadian living in Los Angles.
These are not the overview books on homeopathy but the bedside diagnosis ones.
Whenever my kids had an ear infection this is what I used and it always worked. Place a piece of garlic uncut and unnicked in the ear not down the canal. Tape over it and within 24 hours no earache.
