Sippy Cup Dilemma

My son is six months old, and I am trying to get him to drink some diluted juice out of a sippy cup. We have the gerber beginner ones with the handles on the side and the stopper to keep it from leaking... and he wont drink from it. He doesn't even want it in his mouth. He just takes it and throws it off the table. I was thinking about getting those Nuby ones, since they operate like bottle nipples, dont leak much at all, and seem to have pretty high recommendations. Problem is... when he was born, he absolutely HATED silicone nipples. He only drinks from latex nipples. Anytime we tried to put a silicon nipple on his bottle, or even a sillicon pacifier... he'd spit it out and give us this look like "Are you crazy??". He doesn't even fiddle with teethers that are made of silicone. I am hesitant to try the Nuby sippy cups because he might reject them off the bat because of the silicone top.

Should I give it a try eventhough?... or are there other sippy cups that have latex-like or true latex tops to drink out of?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

He doesn't hold his bottle by himself yet... is that a problem? How do I get him to do it?

When my son was that age he didn't take to his sippy cup quickly either. I tried more than one sippy cup and he eventually picked his favorite. It's all trial and error. His first sippy cup had no handles, he was used to holding the bottle on his own so I guess it was more comfortable for him. Now he uses just about any one.
Good luck!

My son was very picky about pacifers and bottles as well and we had trouble with the sippy cups but then we found the nuby sippy cups and he loves them. He won't even take a bottle anymore. He was 7 months old and off the bottle. They are only $1 at wal-mart so it's worth a try.

The Nuby sippie cups work great. My son wouldn't use a regular sippie cup at all at first and the only one he would use was the Nuby since it was so much like a bottle. The silicone may be a turn off but since they are so inexpensive, it is definitely worth a try. He still prefers them, but he is starting to warm up to the ones that have the rim like a real cup.

Avent makaes an insert like a sippy cup for their bottles. I used them with my 4 year old. You can purchase them at Target. Good luck :-)

Hi S.,

I am a young mommy too (I'm 22) and my son is 11 months and he just recently started drinking from a sippy cup of his own desire. My suggestion to you is to leave the sippy-cup on the table or high chair, have it visible for him, let him play with it. We tried the Avent ones, the Gerber ones, and the Playtex ones and he was just not interested, so we did a bottle with water with the little training handles to get him used to holding it by himself. Finally, one day about 2 or 3 weeks ago, he got a little interested in my drinking water from a cup, so I tried these disposable ones from the 1st years that have a little more give with the spout so it isn't as hard for him to suck water from. He took it and started drinking from it by himself! It doesn't even have handles, but ridges that make it easy to hold. At my son's daycare the teacher told me that it isn't even that big of a deal until they are 1 to really even try a sippy cup. So, in short, make the sippy cup visible but let your little one go at his own pace. You'll be amazed at what he might do to surprise you!

Good luck!
M.

P.S.
The 1st year sippy cups are plastic- not too hard, not too soft.

P.P.S.
And they are disposable! Very affordable!

I, personally, would not force it on your child. I have found that sometimes when a child is that against something, it is for good reason. For example, a mother I knew made her daughter eat something that she would not eat (I honestly can not remember what it was) but after some health complications found out that her daughter was highly allergic to it and that is what was causing her health issues! I have heard a lot of stories like that. So if your son is very against silicone...don't push it.

I enjoyed reading that it was very cute the way you put it about his distaste for silicone :)

Anyway about your dilema. Every child has their own tastes and paces. My son is nine months old and is finally drinking from a sippy cup. I had been trying and he wanted nothing to do with it at all. Sure he would bang it and hold it. But just keep trying you might want to give it a little break and try again later. He might just not want it or be ready for it yet. And if he doesn't like the silicone i wouldn't get the nuby ones he'll probably do the same thing

My daughter is 7 months old and has NO idea how to use a sippy cup either. She prefers to drink out of MY cup...hehe
It's a little wet sometimes but she drinks water that way.
Even if you get a couple Nuby cups and he doesn't want them now, he may change his mind later. I don't think he's quite ready for a sippy cup...he'll let you know when he is :)

Hi S.
My son is 14 months old now and when we first started giving him water at 4 1/2 mths, it was from a coffee cup, it went everywhere, but he got the taste of it... we then put water in a sippy cup and took the thingo out of the lid (thingo being the bit that stops it spilling, little plastic contraption) and it means that the liquid comes straight out... once he knew the water was in there too, he took to the cup as well... it might work the same with juice or perhaps you try a differnet juice..although babys have great suction for bottles with milk and breastfeeding, I think it's hard from them to drink from the sippy cups at that age, he really didn't get it until close to a year...good luck though..

If you are going to use something like a nuby, (just being honest here) you might as well just give him a bottle. I would try a regular plastic cup and be very gentle with it (and paitient too, lol), children as young as 3 months can drink from a cup (obviosly not by themselves though)....i know its not recommended to use a bottle, but that is esentially what the nuby sippy cups are.

Like someone else said, you gotta try different ones. For us it was the Nuby. And by the way I asked my pediatrician if it was ok to use because I thought the same as the other poster- it's identical to a bottle. But I showed it to her and she said it was perfect. It's not the texture that makes a bottle bad for their developing mouths but the shape and the way they have to suck to get the liquid out. The Nuby is just like a sippy cup except it's soft. I think this is why my son took it eventually. He hated the harder ones. Good luck and definitely stock up when you find he likes!

Edited to add: By the way, the Nuby cups aren't expensive at all. Check Walmart. They sell them individually.

My son is 9 months old and we are still going through this. I've purchased atleast 6 different kinds of sippy cups (including the Nuby one you are referring too) and he refuses to use all of them. Good luck! :)

Hi, the Avent (for the handles and non leaking) and Nuby worked for me. You've gotten a lot of good advice, I would probably give your baby a break from the sippy cup for now. It doesn't sound like he's ready. Don't worry, he won't go to college with a bottle :-) When they are about a year old or so they want to do what the "big" kids are doing -- and that's NOT drinking from a bottle. It will come. Also, my ped said no juice at that age. But all docs are different. Double check. We also found a small water bottle (regular 6 oz Crystal Geyser bottle) and put a sport lid on it from another water bottle. It was and is still a HUGE hit! Looks like a "grown-up" water bottle! Good luck and don't sweat it ;-)

S.- we had the same problem with Leah- sort of- she's not anti silicone, but she was picky about her cup. It's just a matter of finding the cup that he likes. Once you find it, buy them in BULK LOL Because they get lost fast!
