So What Happened?

So here is the final result... I waited a week or so then started leaving his sippy cup with his flavored water in it where he could see it and want to use it. It took a few days, but he started to ask for it. Then I just took the bottled away and he did not even notice or ask for them. Its been much easier that I was thinking it would be...thanks for all the advice :)

Hi E.,
I have 3 children 8,5 & 3. When my youngest was transitioning from the bottle to the sippy cup it was very hard. He didn't want it at all and having the other two made it very hard to devote my time only to him to get him to switch. I finally bought a sippy cup from walmart that the nipple was very close to a bottle but it was leak proof. I sat him down and told him how proud mommy was that he had grown up so much. I told him a few times that it mad me happy to see him as such a big boy. Then I told him that big boys used sippy cups and we were going to get rid of the bottles. He didn't like the idea but I did not give in. If he looked for a drink I would give him the new big boy sippy cup. Finally he drank from it (out of thirst) and I danced around the house (like a fool) singing how happy and proud I was of the big boy. For the next few days he would ask for the bottle but when I showed him the sippy cup he asked "This make you happy Mommy?" and I said yes so he drank from it and I danced around. It didn't take that long for him to be very happy with his big boy cup!!!

Hello E.
I did have the same problem with my older daughter, and what i did, i put mustard in the nipple of the bottle, and i told her her bottles were getting old, because she was growing, i gave her the bottle and she made a very funny face and told me mommy, i think my botlle is old, she had some nauseas, but since then no more bottles.
I hope this will help you.

Hi E., have you tried the "Nuby" sippy cup? They have a bottle type spout and they are awesome with the "no leakage" you can purchase them at any Walmart for about $1.97 in the baby aisle. The trick is that the spout is kinda like a nipple. Good Luck M.

I just went through this with my 18month old son. We were at the point where he was only allowed to have his bottle at nap time and bed time. Then we just threw the bottles away. He refused to drink out of his cup at naptime and bedtime for about 3 days, and cried for his ba-ba too. He finally realized that he wasn't getting the bottle anymore and gave in to the cup. It was rough for a few days, very hard not to give in and give him the bottle. I felt horrible when he was crying. But it did work, he doesn't ask for the bottle anymore. I agree with the prior responses that if you take the bottle away, he will take the cup when he is thirsty. I would suggest to buy a few different types of cups to offer him. I even went to a few different stores.

Another suggestion, tell him that he is a big boy now and that you need his bottles for his baby brother.

Good Luck and stay strong!

Have you tried the Avent transition bottles? THey are designed to "trick" kids into using sippy cups. I'm not sure how they work, because my daughter isn't at that age yet, but many of my friends used them... Good luck!

Yes, I have an idea to get rid of the bottle.

Just stop giving it to him. It appears as though if he refuses the sippy cup or cries you are giving in and giving him the bottle. At that age he should not be drinking from a bottle. Put everything in a sippy cup. I guarantee it won't take long before he drinks from the sippy cup. As soon as he's really thirsty and he sees you aren't going to be a pushoever then he will drink from it.

However, that being said - have you tried different kinds of sippy cups? Not all kids take to the same ones. I bought probably 3-4 different styles of sippy cups before I found one that my daughter liked. Once I found the one she liked it was no problem.

She was also 11 months old when I started the sippy cup. My goal was to rid her of bottles at 12 months. So a month before I started giving her one to two servings of her formula a day in a sippy cup, gradually increasing it until pretty soon she was mostly using the sippy cup. On her 1st birthday all bottles were taken away.

Hi E.,
I just wanted to say I totally agree with the others saying just throw them away, I have 4 kids and all of them had there bottle disappear before the first birth day. When They are thirst enough and you don't give in they will deside the cups not so bad. Take him to the store and let him pick out a really cool cup he likes he will be more likely to try it.
and may I suggest starting to introduce your new baby to a sippy cup(no stopper in it) at about 4 months with juice in it.
They tend to be easier to transform totally to it when the bottles gone and some will favor it more that way.
You can do it, put cotton in the ears and throw out the bottles!
good luck
