Sippy Cup Recommendation PLEASE!

My son went through the same thing. We just started giving him a real cup and watched him like a hawk. Now, he did go through a phase where he dumped the whole thing out.. So, maybe you might want to think about that first.

I think all the advice on the previous postings is great. I had this problem with my son, now 16 months and am using the Nunk sippy cups. I just wanted to add one thing. I have a friend who has a boy, now 3 years old, who never took to a sippy cup. She ended up using straws in plastic cups too make the switch a fun thing. I know she found some at Target. He now drinks out of cups with out a straw.

Try the Nuk sippy cups. The drinking part is very simlar to bottle nipple, will feel the same in the mouth but is shaped like a sippy cup. it is silcon. Pretty cheap to buy. Walmart is usually the place that carries it. Hope that was helpful.

I have a few different kinds, Gerber, Nuby, and some of the cartoon ones with Dora and Cars on them. What I can suggest, because I had the same problem with my son is if you take out the safety valve, they get the fluids much easier. Now granted, you will have to watch where he puts it down, so it doesn't get spilled out, but maybe that will help.

Walmart has a brand called Nuby I think it is. They seem to be the easiest to use for beginners. The disposable ones flow easier too but be careful because they can pull the lids off easily. Good Luck!!!

Although sippy cups are convenient because kids can carry them everywhere - we started our kids on cups with straws. To get them to learn how to use a straw - we used capri suns. I'm not big on giving juice - we usually only do milk and water - but capri sun pouches were great. Because they were sweet - our kids wanted to use the straw to get it. We could press the pouch to make the juice come out - our kids would suck and and after a few times - the realized that if the sucked on the straw - they could make the juice come out themselves. Once they had mastered the straw - we started using cups and straws at the dinner table. (we still use sippy cups often, but try to use regular cups at meal time - our kids definitely drink more when using a straw vs. sippy cup)

Each child takes to each sippie cup differently.

I found the most success with Playtex. It's only 3 peices (making easier to manage and wash) with a cup, lid, and plastic suction. If you turn it upside down, it won't spill either. They're about $6 for two.

I've tried using Avent since they make such nice milk bottles as well. But those are no good. The plastic suctions wore out fast so that after a few weeks, the cup would leak. They were difficult to wash and too many parts (4 vs. 3).

I have gotten some Nuby's from Target, I think Wal-Mart has them as well. The flow can be pretty fast on them. It was the first one that my twins took to when breaking them of their bottle habits and we put a small fortune in sippy cups. Hope this helps!

My son struggled with the sippy cup introduction as well. Here is what we tried. I used the Gerber small sippy cup with two handles and a soft spot. I removed the valve from the inside of the cup until he got used to from first drinking from a sippy cup. I also offered him watered down juice for a while. He wasn't fond of drinking milk from a sippy cup at first. You have to watch him like a hawk though because the sippy cup isn't spill proof without the valve.

Another brand that he liked at first was the Playtex style with a straw. It was the style that the straw rolls/folds down into the lid when you are traveling. The cup was recommended for older kids but he did great because there is no resistance when he sucks. Again it is not spill proof. This style cup doesn't have to be tipped up to get the liquid out.

My son uses the NUBY sippy cup. It has a soft nipple and the cup is curved so he is able to grip it well. Walmart and Target carry them but look for ones with a clear cap/lid. Some don't have them.
They also have one with a hard spout that has a valve for fast/slow flow. That one works well for older kids who have more teeth. Hope this helps! T.

be carefull with the Nubby... on my mommy board... Several of us INCUDING myself have noticed that the Nubby are not safe!!! no clue why they are still selling them..

I thought they were great... I infact Bought Get this about 15 different kinds... Insulated... big ones.. little ones.. name it...

but when my son started CHOKING cuz the little inside top part of the part he was sucking was in his mouth and milk was everywhere and he was gagging on the silicone tip It was not!!!!!

I got the playtex cup.. They were great for us! then he went to the hard type and is doing really good on the hard kind.. even the hard kind with a straw.... Stay clear of the soft silicone!!!

I called company and got alllll 15 sent back and got alll my money back... I sent them a pic of the cup and the lid and they examined it.. it was not from him chewing as he had no teeth at the time...

this happen to 3 others on my mommy board..... so Just wanted to pass that on!!!!

I got the sippy cups from Wal-mart that have rubber on the top because then my son still felt like it was a bottle even though it wasn't or try maybe a transition cup for him so he becomes more used to a sippy cup.

Try the Nuk sippy cups, they helped my daughter convert. They have a silicone top just like a nipple. Good luck!!

There are some cups that you can buy that have stages. First it starts out with a tip that is kind of like a nipple and they have to suck. Then you gradually move up from there. I think those work great.

Avent has a good sippy cup. I'm surprised your pediatrician didn't talk to you about this. Even if your son only takes 2 oz. at a meal, I would definately start taking away the bottle. It's just like feeding, he'll drink when he gets really thirsty. Plus, kids this age only need 14-18 ounces of whole milk. That's not very much. I'd bet when you start taking away the bottle, he'll start drinking more milk from the sippy. It may take a week or two, but he'll get the idea.

We use the Avent sippy cups, the spout is soft and you don't have to suck through a straw. I notice that my 19 month old son does not like the sippy cups that have tube like straws, I think they are harder to use. Hope this helps!

My daughter liked the NUBY cups that have a soft top. They are pretty inexpensive, but they don't last real long. At least not for her because she would chew on them. Since they are soft they are a little more like a bottle than some others. I hope this helps, good luck!

Nuby makes a sippy cup with a soft rubbery lid. I found that my children transitioned easier with it because it felt somewhat like a bottle. It also doesn't have a valve so it makes the flow a little easier.

I'm also a huge fan of "Love and Logic." I would just simply say, "If you want to drink that's great, here is your cup." If he throws a fit then that's his problem not yours. Just keep handing him the sippy cup until he understands that's how it is.

First, stop freaking out and adopt this mantra: It's all good if nobody died. Still using a bottle may not be ideal, but it's not unusual at his age. My sister had the same issue. I believe she got some sippy cups with a faster flow (no valve). I would probably toss the bottles and then try out different cups. If your son gets frustrated by not getting enough milk, try a small plastic cup without a lid, supervised of course, and see how he does. Good luck.

I simply took the stopper out of my son's tippy cup when I was transitioning him. I had to keep a closer eye on him with it, but we did that for a few weeks and then I started him on Dixie cups only about 1/4 full of water for a few days. Once he got the hang of not knocking over the cup (and yes, your son is the same age -- amazing to think that he could do it, huh??) we didn't use a sippy or bottle anymore except a sippy in the van. Sucking on those can really ruin a child's teeth structure. I took all of this advice from my friend's mom who has run a home daycare for 30 years. That is what she does with her kids every time. It worked for us!

I tried Avent, Playtex and Nuby without success. By chance my mother had a handless sippy cup from Tupperware, and after trying it for a couple of days my daughter loves it. She's only 10 months old and drinks out of it like a champ! It is called a Bell Tumbler with Sipper Seal. Maybe he'd like it because it looks like a "big boy" cup. Good luck!

A LITTLE ABOUT ME... I'M WORKING MOTHER OF A 17 MONTH BOY AND STEPDAUGHTER 13 YEARS OLD

We ran into this problem as well. My solution. I found a cup that I liked, the insulated playtex, and left out the valve. That way he could get as much out as she wanted. As she got used to the sippy feel I introduced the valve when we would go in the car so it would not get Mommy's van messy and she obliged. This only took about 2 weeks. Something we did with our son was we went camping and honest to God, forgot the bag with his bottles in it. When we left he was asleep in the car so he did not even have one. By the time we realized it we were in the middle of nowhere and the only thing we could find was a sippy cup at the gas station. He fought it a bit and then was fine. He was only 13 months so it was harder to explain to him. By the time we were on the way home he was content with his sippy. I had to call my sister to have her go to our house before we got home and remove all bottle remnants so he would not relapse. It was a great day...a tough first couple nights but well worth it.

Have you tried the straw sippy cups? That's all my daughter has ever liked. I recommend the Playtex and Nubi (at Babies R Us or Walmart), she really likes those. Good luck!
