At what age did you start weening your baby from the bottle to the sippy cup? My daughter is 9 months old and I have not started this process - am I way behind with this?

Hi C.!
My youngest child, who's 4 now, was introduced to the sippy cup at about 6 mos. When we started feeding him the fruit and vegetable baby food, we gave him a sippy cup, with diluted juice in it. He still had his formula bottle in the morning and at night. As well as other mothers here, he took easily to the Nuby sippy cup, because he could hold it like he held his bottle. We kind of introduced him to the new foods and juice around the same time, but give each food at least 3-5 days before introducing a new food...as to look for allergies. Good luck!

i tried practicing with my daughter using a sippy when she was about 6 months old, but it was a waste of time and juice. she didn't show any interest in using the sippy till she was about 9 months old, that's about the same age she figued out how to hold her own bottle too. so once this happened, i would give her juice, water, etc in her sippy, but still give her formula in a bottle. as she got closer to 1 yr old, i started giving her the formula in a sippy during the day and a bottle at bed time. then when we switched to whole milk, we just used the sippy, even at bed time...most of time she uses the NUBE brand sippy cups, they have soft spout, but she has several different ones she uses though.

My son just had his 1 year check up and the doctor said he'd like to have him on a sippy cup by 15 months.
So far, I've not had any luck with any sippy cups. I think I've tried every brand out there.
Good luck:)

I have read you can start trying as soon as they become independent sitters. I started my son around 6 months too and it took him a month or so of trying before he took to it. Picking the right cup might be the biggest challenge. My son rejected all but the NUBY brand. I think b/c they have the soft top (like a nipple) they made his transition easier. As far as age goes...I know my day care suggested when he should start using a sippy cup b/c they wanted him to be off the bottle by the time he moved up to the next level class room! This was around 9 months, I started sending him cups to school. At that time he was still taking a bottle too. Around a year we removed all bottles. Good Luck!

Normally I think they say about 6 months, but I wouldn't worry about being behind on this, it's really tough to do at that young of an age, or at least it was with my 3 and the little girl i babysit for. the key is that most doctor's feel that a child should be off a bottle at thier first birthday. the younger you take away the bottle though the easier it can be, though eliminating the comfort a baby finds in sucking by taking away the bottle can cause thumb sucking and nail biting and other oral fixations, so it's kind of that whole rock and hard place thing. buy some cups, the ones with the silicon spouts, they have really cheap ones at walmart sold individually, no idea what the brand is though but those worked best for me because the kids still had to suck on them and it felt similar to a bottle in thier mouth. but if your dd hates them don't worry over it, give it time, she will eventually take to a cup regardless. good luck.

Hi C.:
My daughter picked up on the sippy within a month -- we introduced it to her at 7 mo. with water only. Go for it! It's fun watching them try to figure it out. We didn't substitue the sippy for the bottle though. The sippy gets water or juice, the bottle gets formula. She's done very well with this. She's 15 mo. now and drinks her sippy all day and still gets one bottle before bed. One piece of advice -- be sure to clean the sippy VERY thoroughly every day. It easily grows bacteria in the spout. Good luck!

I was told with my own child, and suggest to others that the only thing that goes in to the bottle ever is formula or breast milk. Therefore, juice and water supplements if used, no earlier than 6 months, go into a sippy cup. You are by no means behind. You simply start introducing a sippy cup with water or juice, or formula if you like, to your child throughout the day. Maybe as a between meal snack, or just have a sippy with water out so if they want a drink they can get one or they can just start to play with it. Increase the time spent drinking from the cup over the next 3 months, in hopes that by the time your child is 12 months old, you can switch from formula in a bottle to Vitimin D milk in a sippy cup. Big kids milk comes only from big kids cups and the bottles are gone. Easy change.
It sounds simple, and for my child and many others it is. Although for many, it is not. You may want to buy a variety of different cups to try. Your child may be able to drink better from one verses another starting out and may make for an easier transition. Best wishes!

hi C.! with my first daughter, i weened her from the bottle at 16 months and onto sippy cups. when my mom found out she rebuked me for this. she said she hates how people now a days force their babies out of the baby stage too early. i believe she was right in a way. so with my second daughter, i was in no hurry to ween her at all. i would offer her one, and sometimes she would use it, and sometimes she would not. but it was not a stressful situation for her at all. she took to it by 2 years old on her own completely without anymore bottles and it was easy as pie! listen to older people. they are wise!! LOL. good luck to you and the decision you make about your precious baby!! God bless you and those you love, H. B.

C.,

Children all develop at their own rate, and there really is no "way behind," unless your child is still using a bottle going to college. Relax. I nursed my guys until they were two, and then switched to a sippy cup for travel and a regular cup at the table. Some kids never us a bottle or a sippy cup. Your child will show you when she is ready.

Congratulations on your lovely family!
Best wishes,
K.

My daughter weaned herself off at 1 year. They have sippy cups that have a very soft spout made by Nuby. It makes an easy transition from bottle to sippy. Then you can introduce the firm spouted cups. My daughter has behavior problems and is 4 yrs old (she throws her cup all the time when she gets mad) so she still uses both of these kinds of sippy cups.

Hi C.,

I'm S. and I don't think you are way behind because I found that children do things at their own pace. Although I weened my son off the bottle at 11 mths cold turkey one night. I just took it away from him because I kept finding big holds in the nipple. GOOD luck

I think it's time for the cup : )Most pediatricians suggest offering the sippy cup by 6 months, but it takes a couple months for your child to accept it. just offer it to her everyday as often as you can....you're not behind though, don't beat yourself up : ) My daughter is going from the breast at 8 months to the bottle now, but she also takes the sippy cup. The more you offer the cup the easier it will be to wean the bottle over all which should be done by 11-12 months.

Good luck to you and God Bless !

No, you're not to late and it's not too early to start trying. All you can do is try. I think my daughter caught on around 10 or 11 months. Some don't get it till 12 months. Try her and if she doesn't get the sippy cup concept hold off for another month and try again. It never hurts to try!

Good luck!
