Sippy Cups - Sayreville, NJ

After reading the question about stopping the playing of games with a sippy cup...that reminded me of my question: Is there a straw-based cup that doesn't leak? I've got some Nuby straw cups and Playtex straw cups...and they all leak. I realize that I may be after the straw cup "Holy Grail" here, but I wanted to ask anyway.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks to everybody for your advice and recommendations! I picked up a Diego Munchkin cup yesterday and am testing it out-so far so good, but the acid test will be after the first run through the dishwasher (most of my present cups started leaking after that), and I am keeping an eye out for the other brands suggested. Wish us luck!

On a whim, I bought a cup with a straw of a sort made into it at Walmart for my daughter (22 months)yesterday. It was a cheap cup shaped like an animal where the straw is the tail. The tail comes out at the bottom, so she drinks her entire cup without a problem. and it has an easy twist on cap (like a thermos)for filling at the top of the animal. She honestly loves it. She enjoys drinking from a straw, but it has been amazing how she can pull the straws out or cause a leak where the straw goes in to make a mess with more expensive models. Since the "straw" is part of the cup with this, thats not a problem. Hope this suggestion helps.

I think Playtex sells one with a straw that doesn't leak. I have a friend who uses it, who swears by it.

I have a set of cups from tupperware that use a regular straw. They ar not leak proof - but they are the best I have found. They only leak if totally upside down or if you shake them - and usually it is just what is in the straw itself that leaks out. They are a few years old - it looks lke now they have an insulated version

I didn't look at all the products on the tupperware site - so they may still be available - but I would go for the insulated ones!!!!

Good luck

This is not so much finding things as finding out things. My sister has a friend who is a speach therapist. she said that sippy cups were not good for children as the palate in their mouth is soft and able to conform very easily when they are small. sucking on the sippy cups is very hard. Try it adults, you will see. the cups that won't allow the liquid to spill when it tips over are the ones that we are talking about. the child sucks so hard that they actually slowly distort the palate and this causes speach imparements. The straws with the crooks in them, the flixible ones that go with cups are not good either. they will allow bacteria to build up in them and that will make the child sick. Yes, even though the look clean, they are not. I used to use one to drink my water from my water cup and i would even bleach it once a week. One day I drank grape juice through this straw and you should have seen the bacteria that took on the color of the juice. Not a pretty sight. Food for thought. the speach therapist said drink straight from a cup when they can, no straws or sip cups. this allows the mouth to develope and and strengthen properly. food for thought parents. Yes! There is such a miracle straw cup! lol Believe it or not, the somewhat cheapy ones from The First Years that come three to a pack are fantastic! They are the ones with characters on them - Thomas the Tank, Mickey Mouse, etc. I've bought them in WalMart and Kohls. They are "Take & Toss 10oz straw cups" Kohls.com has the 3-pack on sale right now for $4.90. I suppose if the cup were to be turned upside down, you could MAKE it leak, but my son has dropped them, rolled them, etc. and I've never had a problem! Oh, just one thing - make sure you insert the straw AFTER you pop the top onto the cup or you'll get squirted with apple juice! Hope this helps.

hold on to your hat, they do DO EXIST. My daughter is 5 so i'm stretching my memory cells here to remember exact where we got those... i remember the cup is slightly bigger than desirable, but having the rubbery retractable straw was a fine trade-off. So, I'm going to describe it, while my brain to tries think, where/name... It's the size of a cup/bottle gym people use and the lid has a flip-up(over) slider thing and a rubber straw pops up, slide it back, straw goes in, cup is sealed. pretty cool. ok, we had a princess one from a dollar store type place and then a fancier one from an athletic gear place, like paragon. Maybe someone else has better shopping advice...

Hi K.,

I feel your pain re: sippy cups that leak! I have found that the best cups I've used so for are made by playtex and Munchkin. They can be expensive so I would suggest going to Wal-mart or Target, they seem to have the best prices on things like that. Good luck.

Hi K.,
We have not tried any cups with a straw yet.. my daughter might be too young for that. I have removed the leak guard from her cups and she does well drinking without them. I clean, A LOT. We have had success with NUBY brand cups, they mimic the softness of a bottle and they were recommended by my pediatrician. My daughter is 14 months old and now starting to do well with harder cups; the playtex ones.

I got one at stop and shop. It is by Gerber. It is insulated, cost about $4. It may leak (never actually checked) however it closes so you can fill it up and take it with you.

Hey K., I have the same problem. I tried about 5 different cups with straws and the one that leaks least is by Munchkin. They sell a 10oz insulated straw cup. They are hard to find. I found some at Shaws for about $5. You can check out their website at www.munchkin.com and it gives a list of all their cups. They do occasionally leak from the straw and around the lid but not as often as other cups I've tried. Doesn't prevent my 20 month old from letting the liquid dribble out of his mouth but my rug and furniture now stay dry, lol. Good luck.

Hi K.,

Our child skipped the sippy cups- we went right to the cup. Several reasons, really, but I worry about plastics and what they contribute to health wise and landfill, too. I shop at the Salvation Army and Goodwill and antique stores and keep a constant eye out for kid size glasses. We have several different sizes, shapes and even ones with little pictures. Our little one loves to tell us his preference and even fills his own glass most of the time (yikes!) and we really haven't had many casualties, though a few spills. I think if they can learn to respect the glass and contents (and rugs!) it can work nicely.

Good luck! Love, R.

You are right- it is the "Holy Grail" search. I have a 5 1/2 yr old and a 4 yr old and we have gone through EVERY sippy cup ever produced- they all leak. If someone tells you it doesn't their kid just hasn't found a way yet! Sorry to burst your bubble! Just be prepared for the spills and hope she learns quickly when it's time for a big girl cup.

Rubbermaid makes one that I have found is pretty good and will only leak if you turn it upside down and squeeze it. My daughter used this since about one year old since she had trouble using the regular sippy cup. She is 22 months now and can use all types of cups (although I still like the ones with the covers)

We love cups that I got through Tupperware. I got them years ago, and do not remember what they are called. They came with four different colored cups and matching lids. You put your own straw in it. You can use a standard straw, or the cute ones that curl or twist. They do not leak (only when upside down), and the lid stays on tight, even when dropped. They are also dishwasher safe. I believe they also come in two different sizes.

i'm not sure why you had a problem with the nuby sippy cup WITH a straw, but that has never leaked for me while putting milk, water, or juice in it. the ONLY time it leaked was when my husband puke orange soda in...yeah, i know, soda is soooo bad for them, but he refuses to listen to me. but anything that's "bubbly" WILL leak from that cup, even standing upright, but as long as the straw is securely put in place in the top, it has NEVER leaked on me at all! as for any other sippy cups with the straw, none have worked for me yet (other than of course the nuby) and the only sippy cup that didn't leak without the straw was the playtex cups. that's what i'm using now. good luck.

Unfortunately all sippy cups will leak a couple of drops at one time or another. What I figured out the main problem is-is making sure you have all the seals in the proper place. Those Nuby straw cups are great, but it's a little frustrating to make sure none of the rubber is folded under or anything. Just be extra careful when you put it all back together. Also we like the little Rubbermaid straw cups. Those are great as long as your child doesn't squeeze it too hard. My 17 month old handles them great without squeezing.
