Six Week Postpartum Visit

How important is this visit really? I missed mine because I was sick and now I have to reschedule. I've find I've been putting it off. I think I'm really just "doctored out". I feel really good and I feel like I don't really need to go although I guess I probably should. Any input?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Okay, so thanks to everyone's concern and advise...I went. I do feel better that I went and I got to show off my little beauty. The doctor checked me out, said all was well and sent me on my way. The best part...I didn't have to schedule another appointment on the way out...woooohoooo. Thanks everybody!!!!

I would highly recommend going for your six-week post partum check. The doctor needs to see how you are healing from your delivery, along with some other stuff. I got my annual pap at my post partum visit (although I ended up pregnant 8 months later, so the whole "come back in a year" thing didn't work for me!).

I completely understand being doctored out, but I think it's really important to go. You will also get the "all clear" for ALL activities if you are healed.

Good luck!

With my last baby I did go to my 6 week postpartum visit and I was very disappointed. He didn't check me or anything. He just said how are you feeling and gave me some birth control pills and practically kicked me out the door!!!!!!It was a waste of my time! And- I actually had some concerns..... but hopefully you are blessed with a good doctor....It normally is really important to go back to the doctor for your 6 week check up, but if you are feeling fine, then I think it is your call!

It is pretty important. I understand you feel "doctored out" I had a high risk pregnancy that involved multiple doctor appointments and then spent extensive time getting blood work done after the baby and going to her visits (she is healthy, but was jaundiced) so I feel your pain. However, the six week post-partum visit allows your doctor to make sure you have completely healed and that your uterus is back to its normal size and position (sometimes they migrate while you are pregnant and post-partum). The last thing you want is to get an infection or an injury because for some reason something was not healing properly and you took yourself off pelvic rest. (Even though sex might be the last thing on your mind right now, I felt a certain peace of mind that when I was ready, my body was too.) For me, it ended up being a wonderful visit to bring my daughter to see the first person who "gave her a hug." And my OB was thrilled to see her too and not have to order any more tests for me!

I had midwives for my pregnancy so I enjoyed a reason to go see them again. :) I guess it makes it easier when you have a wonderful group of people caring for you. Also with midwives they check out the baby as a newborn as well. SO- when she was 3 days old a midwife came to my house (that's right, they make house calls) she made sure I was healing fine, and weighed the baby and stuff- I didnt have to take my baby to the ped. when she was brannew for a weight check! At my 6 week postpartum visit (I went at 8 weeks) I got an IUD and a physicial. Also, they weighed my baby, so it was exciting b/c I knew I would get to see how my baby was growing!

I would say go. It's the last one for a yr.

Personally, I'd say it's very important to go. At my first post-natal visit I had a bad pap-smear, I ended up having Dysplasia (pre-cancerous cervical cells) and had to have cryo-surgery to clear things up. Of course, with my second pregnancy things were peachy... but one can never really tell unless they're checked out. Best of luck and congrats on the new baby!

Definitely go! They just want to make sure all is well with your body and with your emotions. And also it's a good time to discuss birth control, if you haven't already. The best part is you get to show off your beautiful baby!

I think this visit is very important. I had an abnormal pap smear as some of my other friends did as well. My came out fine but you do want to make sure that you don't have any infections and that everything healed as it should have.

Please go because many things could be going on in your body and you may not know. I didn't go and ended up pregnant again.

I missed my six week check-up but went in at 10 weeks. The check-up itself is important especially the pap smear. You can never be too careful. If nothing else go to your reg doctor for the test.

2 pieces of advice: Better late than never!! and Do it for your kids!!
My post partum exam was like 2 months late cuz we moved from FL to NC at the time it was due, then the clinic here didn't have any available slots for a long time.
Nobody likes going to the Dr, but one thing I've learned from my mom...GO! She was always scared of doctors, and hardly ever went, and now she's in bad shape. It makes me sad cuz she can't enjoy her grandkids. I SWORE never to do that to my kids.
So if you don't do it for yourself, do it for your kids (and grandkids)!!!

It is a good idea to go, I have five children and can understand having "better" things to do than going to the Dr., especially when you are feeling good. It really doesn't take long and is worth getting checked. Congratulations on your new Baby!!!

I didn't go when I had my daughter. I just couldn't find the energy for another pelvic exam. It was 10 weeks post partum when I was at the doctors for something else. I asked the nurse the very same question you just asked. I said I was already back on my regular period, sexually active, ect, so what exactly did the doctor need to check out? She said I was probably fine, but that she couldn't tell me not to get the exam. Well, I have had another child since and I did have my post partum and of course everything was fine. I'd say it's really your choice if you think you need this exam or not. You know your body better than anyone else.

I think this appointment is very important. Its just to make sure you healed correctly and everything is fine. I understand what you mean by doctored out. My pregnancy was considered high risk so I saw my doctor more then I would have liked. It dont take to long. For me I had to reschedule because my cycle begun the week i was suppose to go for my check up so mines was a 7 week check up. My doctor check me and told me she cant even tell I had a baby which made me feel real good. and she said my baby was pretty. (she happen to be out of town when i had her so it was the first time she saw her) I say go.

well your doctor will want to do another pap test to make sure everything is still ok, he will want to check if you had to have an episiotomy to make sure that is healing correctly, and he will also check your internal organs to make sure that they are back where they are suppose to be and that you are healing correctly on the inside. This is also a good visit to talk about birthcontrol and your options and if you have any questions. I would definitely keep the appointment, make sure everything is healing properly and then unless you have problems you won't have to see him again for a year.

Go and get it over with. It doesn't take that long. Doc needs to be sure everything is ok down there. Also, its a good chance to thank you Doc for bringing your baby into the world!

It is honestly the quickest visit you will ever have. All they do is check to make sure everything looks okay downstairs, make sure your emotions are being handled, which I'm sure they are. Plus with mine, they weighed the baby and told me how much weight he had gained and how great of a job I was doing. It was a real ego boost. Told me I was doing everything right and to keep doing what I was doing. Plus, after this one, you don't have to go for another year unless you get sick. YAY!

After both my kids, I didn't feel like going to the doctor any more either, especially because I needed to take the kids with me to the appointment. However, this visit is very important. The OB checks to make sure your uterus has gone back to normal size and that any bleeding has stopped, checks to make sure that any abrasions or cuts in the birth canal have healed properly and determines when you are able to resume sex. You shouldn't let this go any longer. Once you go, you can rest easy and really enjoy your new little girl.

Well this visit is where you talk about depression and talk about contraception. You may feel fine but you could still be depressed. I was. He asked me some questions and then figured it out. Nothing bad though. But the doc will talk to you about birth control (if your tubes arent tied) and which ones you can take that is if your breastfeeding or not. Really you need to go to this visist. I forgot the doc tooks at your "stuff" to make sure it healed correctly. Especially if you had an episotomy? (guessing on spelling) u get it. He will look at it and make sure he doesnt see any signs of infection and what not. This appointment is important. Please dont put it off.
