Skin irritation/Rash

My 22 month old son has a rash that is on the fold of his leg where his diaper attaches and it is spreading up on his stomach. It is also on his bottom and on the back of his leg behind his knee. It isn't really red it looks like raised bumps on his skin. I have been using Balmex, Desitin and Arbonne's Diaper Rash Cream as well as powder to see if it would clear it up. So far nothing has really worked. I'm not sure if it is a heat rash or Yeast Infection or if he is allergic to something...possibly Chlorine since we have been swiming a lot. How long should I wait to have it seen about or do you know of any other things I could treat it with. He doesn't seemed to be itching it or bothered by it. Thanks so much.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks so much for everyones quick response. Hopefully I'll be able to get in with the pediatrician tomorrow to find out for sure what it is. I'm thinking it's either a yeast infection or a heat rash. I'll let you know what I find out.
Blessings to all.
P.

My doctor told me a of a concoction that worked for my little ones. I have 10 month old twins and one of them had a bad rash last week. It's a paste made from Balmex, Mylanta (the acid reflux liquid), Lotrimin AF (antifungal cream), and Cortaid 1% (hydrocortisone). It worked beautifully. If that still doesn't work, take him to the doctor and they can prescribe Vusion. That works like a charm, but try the paste first.

Hi P., Sounds like what my daughter had last Summer while she was still in a diaper. If so, it's fungal and can be treated w/ athlete's foot cream. I showed the rash to a pharmacist and she reccomended the cream. She was on the money.

Could it possibly be eczema? My son had it and it sounds like the same thing. It is brought on by allergic reactions. My son is allergic to most laundry soaps and bath soaps. Chlorine could do this to your son's skin too. I would say refrain from swimming for the next week and keep it dry. Go on and have the doctor check him out, but in the mean time use a low hydrocortizone on the spots. Because my son is allergic to most perfumes in soap, we were instructed to wash him in white dove soap and lather him up twice a day with cetaphyl lotion (I think that is how you spell it.) You can find that in the face wash aisle at Wal-mart. I put the hydrocortizone cream on twice a day as well. The doctor may prescribe an ointment. If he hasn't shown signs of this before it is probably the chlorine, so watch out when you wash clothes in bleach. Obviously, I'm not a doctor, he will know best, but these things may help until he can be seen.

it sounds to me that your son has a yeast infection. my son had the same type of rash for about a week and when it wouldn't clear up with diaper cream or powder i finally took him to the doctors and that is when i found out it was a yeast infection. i would definitly recommend you contact your sons pediatrician and see what they think. they did tell me that i could treat it with over the counter cream but i opted for the prescription instead. (the prescription was actually cheaper that the over the counter creams). hope this helps.

sounds like a yeast infection. My daughter had something similar when she was about 18 months old. She ended up getting a staph infection along with the yeast infection. Just to be on the safe side I'd take him in. If the bumps look like pimples then take him in. That's what the start of staph looks like. Good Luck!

Sounds like a yeast rash. Call your pediatrician.

Also, my dr recommended corn starch (to dry) & maalox (for the sting) mixed together into a paste. Works miracles.

Sounds like Exema to me. My little guy has it. Apparently caused from Allergies. Everytime he eats too much Chocolate, it flairs up. If it clears up and comes back - that is probably what it is.. but see you Dr. He can tell you for sure.

Good day P.,
I would definately stay away from powder. It clumps and paste causing rash to worsen. It it moist? The affected area, a moist rash? Most likely yeast. We have to dry it out first. Babies bodies will cycle, anytime you know he's not due for a poop leave him to air out in a towel, while in the swing or his carrier. If he urinates you can always wash the towel.by the end of a day you may have a load of towels. After his bath let him air dry. Creams do heal protecting the area from the burning urine can create but can also hold in the moisture from the rash.Creaming a little less through out the day and airing a little more might help. Definately cream before bed and nap (again bloking the urine to make contact). Keep check on him that if he does urine you replace the towel and let the little fella's area breath a lttle.

Along with all the other great advice you've gotten, you may want to try changing his diaper. He may be super sensitive to the glue on the tabs.

It sounds like Excema to me. Both I and my son (he's 2)have it. For both of us, it usually starts in all the places where sweat builds up first, which seem to be the same places that you had mentioned. As an adult, mine sometimes starts up with stress as well as heat. Usually it doesn't bother either one of us as long as we take care of it quickly, we both use Gentle Touch Excema cream.

Anyway, I do think you should have a doctor look at it anyway just so you can make sure because if it is excema, then some of the creams and definitely the powder is counter-reactive to what needs to be done to cure the excema. Hopefully, the doctor can steer you in the right direction.

I would see a doctor if I were you, my son had that & it turned out to be food allergies. It's better to be safe than sorry.

My daughter’s 15 month check-up 2 months ago coincided with a rash that she just developed on her inner thy like what you described (I tried Balmex and other diaper rash creams, but nothing worked). My pediatrician said to use a little bit of over-the-counter Cortisone cream (Walmart brand is really cheap). I applied the 1% lotion and in 24 hours it was completely gone. My Ped said that if it was a yeast infection/rash, the cortisone would make it worse, and I’d have to get a prescription cream. Try a wee bit of1% Cortisone and it should clear up!

Hi P.,

I would just take him in to the Doctor to be sure. It's not worth trying things when you don't know what it is.

Dear P.,
Sounds like a yeast infection to me. My son gets the same thing. I make sure he has yogurt everyday. My pediatrician prescribed Nystatin and it clears it right up. You put it on 4 times a day. It is hot here in Florida and the bacteria just builds up. I would take him directly to the doctor.

Good luck,
S.

It could be a number of things. I would try the Aveeno oatmeal bath and the Aveeno lotion on his legs. If that doesn't seem to help then I would take him to the pediatrician for an antibiotic.

Good luck.

Hi, my daughter had something similiar she gets it when she eats something acidy, and she also got it when I was giving her orajel for her teeth. If it is red at first then turns into bumps then it may be a stomach problem. I just put my daughter in a warm bath and it helps.

My daughter often gets mild excema behind her knees, and we use Aveeno hydrocortisone cream on it; it clears within a day.
However, she is older and never had it on her bottom--you may just want to check with your ped. first to be sure.
