OK, let me begin by saying, i haven't changed any of the brands of food that i buy, my daughter is on a strict diet for weight gain, so i have to be extremely consistant in the food she eats. also, she has eaten cheese since she was about 7mo. old and has never had a problem, until sat afternoon. i made her a grilled cheese sandwhich(which she's eaten plenty before) and everywhere the cheese touched on her face broke it in a cherry colored rash. i tried benadryl& cortizone cream & had to wash both off right away because it made it worse. the only thing i found that worked was mixing baking soda & water and dabbing it on the red spots with a washcloth. my question is has anyones' child gone through this & if so, what was the cause & what did you do about it?

What can I do next?

my daughter did that with mac and cheese. I don't know what caused it, but it went away eventually.

My 2 1/2 year old daughter has had this with Ranch and ketchup and a few other things (red just exactly where it was on the skin so it made an exact pattern on her skin). I wipe them off and the redness usually goes away within 5-10 minutes. We've gotten her tested as she has had an aversion to milk and other seemingly-allergy issues. Initial tests showed no allergies, but the allergist believes she still has some. I've sort of given up trying to figure out why and so far she seems to be growing out of some of the allergies.

Hi C.,
We can develop allergies at any time for seemingly unknown reasons. Histamines can accumulate in our body to the degree that our natural anti-histamine reactions cannot overcome them. If your daughter continues to have chronic constipation it is not surprising that this occured. She is unable to get the waste out of her colon which can allow it to be reabsorbed into her blood stream, thus causing reactions that might not have occured occured. Others have helped constipation by getting enough good bacateria (a quality pre-biotic) into the digestive system, along with lots of pure water. I would keep her off of all dairy (milk is for baby cows, afterall, not baby humans) and give her body a chance to rebuild the healthy resistance to what she is showing allergies to. There are lots of things that could be done to help both your precious children if you're interested.

Hi C.,

I have not read any other responses to your post so I might not be adding anything new by saying my daughter was like yours and she was tested for celiac disease. At first I thought her problems was milk and cheese but it was an intolerance to gluten and then many other allergies and sensitivities to additives, colorings and environmental factors. Your local library might have the book called "Is This Your Child" by Doris Rapp MD who is a board-certified environmental medical specialist and pediatric allergist. Good Luck.

Maybe the manufacturer of the cheese changed something in their ingredients? It wouldn't surprise me one bit! I think I would just stay away from that kind of cheese for awhile. Maybe try it again in a month or so. Since she just had a skin reaction and no trouble breathing or anything, I wouldn't worry too much.

Hi C.,

No "for sure" answers here from me, jus t wanted to sazy a couple of things: I have started sort of following the diet Susie L mentions--no wheat, dairy or sugar (we've emailed each other about it before), and i notice I feel better, even though I "cheat" a little.

I also notice that in your post you say your DD has eaten cheese since about 7 months old; then in your "A little about me" section, you state that at 8 months she was diagnosed with failure to thrive with chronic constipation. Could the beginning of eating cheese have had anything to do with those things? Did she drink cows' milk before then and thrive? The culprit could be a preservative or added ingredient in the cheese, rather than the cheese itself.

It might be interesting to see how she does without any cheese in her diet, or without any dairy at all. I know we worry about calcium, but there must be foods other than milk that are high in calcium; or maybe a supplement might be the way to go.

Good luck, and let us know what happens!

I just wanted to say that this happened to my 3 yr old son awhile back. It only happens when he has the cheap imitation cheese. The kraft singles don't affect him. He has been refusing to eat cheese for a few months now. I think he has it in his head that he's allergic to all cheese and I tried to explain the situation to him. He is very precocious and thinks he knows everything! He has never had a reaction to any other cheese or milk product. The artificial, oil based slices also affected my two year old and he loves any kind of cheese. I think it's something they put in those cheap slices. We are sticking to the good stuff from now on! Lol!I am going to have a talk with their doctor about it next month. I don't think it is anything to get extremely worried about but better safe than sorry. Hope this helps! Have a great day!

My grandson went thorugh this, and we found that he has a severe dairy allergy.

First, if your daughter needs to lose weight, both dairy and wheat are thwarting your efforts to help her. I know this because I have been through it.

About a year ago, I began seeing an Integrative M.D. (an M.D. who combines traditional medical practice with a more natural approach). Her advice has turned my life around! Within one week of beginning her diet for life, I began losing weight and inches, and ALL of my chronic health issues began to subside. After nearly 35 years of chronic migraines and fibromyalgia, I have been pain free for 15 months, and I'm once again able to be active and happy. About 90% (maybe more) of this is due to my diet, and the other 10% (maybe less) is due to supplements that I take. I know this because I am currently unemployed and on a very tight budget. I have had to forgo my supplements for prolonged periods of time, and haven't had a setback.

Back to my grandson's dairy allergy: As soon as all dairy was removed from his diet, he was fine.

I will be glad to send you the outline for the diet I am on. I have been working with my doctor on text for a web site or facebook group page to promote healthy heating, so I have a good outline all ready to send out.

My doctor began her career as a pediatrician who specialized in treating children with developmental and behavioral issues, anywhere from mild to severe. She was concerned with the traditional medical community's recommendation for so much medication, so she began doing research on treating her patients through diet whenever possible. My diet plan is the diet she came up with for all of her young patients. As the parents began to see significant improvement in their children, they began to make appointments with her to discuss their own health. She now has a family practice, and hundreds of patients who have seen tremendous improvement in their health. She raised her three children on this diet, and her 102 year old father has been following this plan since he was in his mid 70s. Two years ago, he spent his 100th birthday celebrating in Spain. He has only recently stopped traveling extensively.

Let me know if you want me to send you the outline for this diet. At first glance, it seems like it's hard to follow, but it really isn't at all. I still eat out in restaurants, and I enjoy most of the food I've always loved. I've just learned to do without the foods that were making me sick.
