Hello moms- Okay my baby just turned a year and he sleeps longer at night. I just want to make sure this is normal. I know, I know. I can hear all the moms saying "she's complaining he's sleeping?". It's just that it turned on a dime which I know they do. He was going to sleep at 11pm and waking at 6 or 7am. Cut to a month or two later and he goes to sleep between 9:45-10:30 pm and sleeps until 9am. He just started on this schedule two days ago. (A month ago when I let him sleep untill 9am, he didn't fall asleep until almost midnight. ugh). But now.... Okay so apparently he needs more sleep right? Oh and he's still taking at least one 2 hour nap sometimes 2 two hour naps. Thank you

That's wonderful, and normal, don't worry! My daughter switched like a light bulb near her first birthday, too. If you can get him to bed earlier, that would be even better, he might suprise you how long he can sleep (12 hrs is a great goal for nighttime). They do need a lot of sleep at this age, especially when they're getting only one nap. A two-hr nap is pretty typical, and should be paired with 11 hrs of nighttime sleep at least, if possible, and more is better. They should be getting 12-16 hrs of total sleep in a 24 hr period right now. My daughter sleeps 11 hrs at night and has a 2-3.5 hr nap in the afternoon, and has been on this schedule since she turned 1.

I notice when she goes through a growth spurt or some kind of big change physically or emotionally, she'll sleep more for a week or two. Those kinds of changes are normal, encourage as much sleep as possible without pushing bedtime later (due to longer afternoon naps). And enjoy the additonal hours of quiet! Congratulations!

Once they are more active, they will begin sleeping longer at night, even with a 2-hour nap in the afternoon. My twin grandkids were taking a 45-minute morning nap 1 1/2-2 hour afternoon nap and going to bed at 8:30pm, sleeping through until 7:00am when they were a year old.

My experience is that they sleep like that when they are going through a growth spurt. I know both my son and my daughter did it. They would sleep and sleep and then poof - grow and inch all at once! It should not be a problem at all. My kids (especially my daughter) are big sleepers anyway. She still sleeps 10 hours a night and she's 12.

That is his way of saying "I need more sleep" and it is normal especially during growth spurts. You should give your baby a bed time and still with that one time. Such as 7:00pm for bed time and eventually baby will get sleep at the same time and usually wakes at the same time. Such as 7pm sleep, wake up at 6:30am. And 2 hour nap's are needed for baby's growth.
Keep up the great work!

Dear MJ,

Wow! I am surprised that he went to bed at 11pm! That seems so late to me!! My two boys are in bed by 8 to 830pm and up on a dime by themselves at 7am. They wake me up!! My 3 1/2 yr old comes into the room and says "mommy baby's awake" and my day starts. Add to that my just turned one year old takes two 2 hour naps a day, once at 10am and one at 230pm. But I do strict routines though with play, sleep, and eating times. So they know once they are in their beds it is sleep time. If they sleep late, I let them. Especially if the older boy had a rather active day before. Their bodies be the guide. Just like when he goes through a growth spurt he eats and eats and eats! His body will say if he is hungry and I trust he IS hungry or he IS tired. It usually only lasts a few days for my older one. Enjoy the extra sleep and trust that God knew what he was doing when he made our bodies to tell us what they need. Good Luck!

MJ,

He is fine! Babies/Toddlers let you know how much sleep they need and will adjust accordingly. It is possible that he is going through a growth spurt-- How lucky for you! Enjoy the time while you can~

He is more active now and probably using up a lot of energy during the day. So he needs more sleep at night. Enjoy this while it lasts, because once he's used to the new active life, you'll probably see another change and wish he would sleep a little more. They also get to the point where they are enjoying their activity so much that even though they are totally exhausted they don't want to give up and go to sleep.
