Sleep Habits of 14 Month Old

My darling baby girl is 14 months old and she sleeps 12-14 hours at night. I am NOT complaining :), however, I am slightly concerned. She also gets a nap in the am, usually 1-2 hours after she wakes up for about 1-2 hours. Her afternoon nap is also about 1-2 hours, sometimes 3 hours. She eats normal, acts normal. She's a happy healthy baby. She's is active while awake and just started to walk about 2 weeks ago. She's not sick right now. Is it normal for her to sleep so much? My husband says its a growth spurt and that since she's walking she is wearing herself out more. I'm inclined to believe him, but I'd like a few other opinions. Thanks!

What can I do next?

Can I borrow your baby? Mine sleeps for about 12 hours at night, but already doesn't want to take ANY naps during the day.

Pretty please?

In all seriousness, I think some babies just sleep more than others. :-)

Read some of the posts here, and thank god she is such an angel. Yes, each child takes what they need. Give thanks, and enjoy.

I think we should have a raffle... who wins your baby for a week; I'll switch you :) I saw another mom wanted to borrow your sweet little girl, too... I'll fight her for it :) heh heh, but, it's true, some babies just have sleep habits like your daughter and everything is fine. I'd say if it is still this way after 2; still taking 2 naps instead of one, especially, then go see the Doc. :)

A doctor visit is never out of the question. Just to be on the safe side. My 7 month old sleeps about 12 hours a night, and takes 2 1-2 naps a day. It seems like he sleeps more when he's growing. He's already in 12-18 month clothing because his little legs are so long! Good luck!

Hi D.~
I definitely wouldn't worry about this. My son was and still kind of is on this sleep cycle where he sleeps most of the day. He sleeps less at the sitters and on the weekends I let him sleep when he wants to. I figure with the other kids around he gets caught up in the excitement and ends up sleeping when they sleep. He snoozes more on the weekend. Especially if she's walking/running and very active, she will most likely sleep like this. I would just mention it to your pedi on her next visit. It sounds like she's pretty healthy and is eating well, so I wouln't worry about it.
Good luck, P.

My daughter is 16 months old and we just went through this same thing a couple months ago. She slept for atleast 13 hours at night and took two 2 hour naps a day. She couldn't stay awake for more than 2 hours at a time making it very hard to get anything done outside of the house and had me wondering if something else was going on with her. It lasted for about 6 weeks and now she sleeps about 11 hours at night and only one nap during the day for about 2 hours. I guess she just needed the sleep and so does your little one. Enjoy all the quiet time while you can!

Hi D.! I'm thinking that if it was me, and as long as she is a happy and healthy baby, I'd probably call my pediatrician and just ask him/her this question, or wait and see if this goes on for more than a couple of weeks. Also, if you're still wanting a work-from-home job - I've found something I love! Check it out at www.healthyplanetandhomes.com

Every person needs a different amount of sleep. Children do sleep more during a growth spurt. If she has always been a good sleeper then she may just need more sleep. You can also call and inquire with the pediatrician or maybe your insurance has an "Ask a Nurse Line". It could be called by another name here. It is a phone center manned by RNs that you can ask questions. They can answer or give guidance in what to do if they feel that you need to see a doctor. In MO they would also call back in 24-72 hours depending on your question to do a follow up call. You can check with your insurance provider to see if this is a service that they offer.

From experience, as well as all that I've read, I wouldn't worry about your daughter sleeping so long. However, if you are really concerned, call your pediatrician. They are there for you, so I wouldn't feel any qualms about asking them whatever you want to know. I will say, enjoy this sleeping habit while you can...it will change before you know it!

Is this a new development, or has she always slept a lot? Every child is different, so it's probably normal for her (and YAY for all the time you have to do 'your stuff'), but you might at least ask her Ped. if it could be a problem, especially if it just started.

I think that is probably normal. Mine did that at 1 also and so did my other, older children when they were babies. When they get closer to 2 they will start sleeping less and less.
At 12 - 14 months they still require alot of sleep as they are still growing tremendously but at age 2 they begin to slow down on their growth so their sleeping habits begin to lighten. Enjoy it while you can.

COMPLETELY NORMAL - not even related to a growth spurt, just normal sleep needs for a child her age!!! Just an FYI - children generally drop the morning nap somewhere between 14 - 16 months, give or take, so she may soon only nap once a day in the afternoon. My daughter dropped her morning nap at around 15 months and then just took a 3 hour afternoon nap. My daughter also had and still has (she's 2 3/4) great sleep habits. If you think it would make you feel better, call your ped to discuss this, but it's completely normal.

I've seen sleep charts in pediatricians' offices that list how much sleep little guys should be getting for their ages, and she sounds like she is right where she should be. So many kids don't get enough sleep, then act like monsters all during their waking hours (like mine).

Don't worry, my son was about the same and he dropped is morning nap soon after that. He is now almost 2 years old and still sleeps about 11 hours at night and takes an early afternoon nap of about 2 hours (sometimes 3). It is also true that they sleep more when they are getting ready for a milestone too!

Can our children change sleep habits for a couple of weeks so I can catch up on my sleep? ;-)

My son dropped the 2nd nap a day at 10 months. He's 17 months and sleeps 10 to 11 hours at night, but only take usually one 2 to 2.5 hour nap per day.

Sometimes I wish he'd take more of a nap, because I know he's tired! I'm jealous! :-)

You almost perfectly described my little guy's sleeping habits up until a month ago or so. He's 15 months old and we just switched him to 1 nap a day (he sleeps about 13 hours at night and 3 hours in the daytime now). Can't give you an official "normal" diagnosis, but I will say that we were pronounced perfectly healthy at our 15 month checkup. Enjoy the time "off the clock"!!

It's totally normal! My DD was sleeping that much at her age, and in fact STILL takes 2 naps of almost the same duration and sleeps about 12 hours at night. Just consider yourself blessed and remember that a lot of their brain development takes place while they're sleeping! :)

Hi D.,
Your husband is right. She's wearing herself out more now that she's started walking. And she probably is going thru a growth spurt. This will be a good excuse to go shopping. :) Take advantage of it, because once she turns 2 or 3, she'll want fewer naps, and will hate bed time! I have 4 children myself. They ALL went thru this! Have fun and good luck!

My daughter is 16 months, and she has up until a week ago, been sleeping from 6:30 pm to 6:30 am, with a 2 hr nap in the am (around 9am) and another nap at 2:30 or 3pm, last 1 to 1 1/2 hours. Now she has started sleeping from 6:30pm to 8am, and then taking a 3 hour nap around 11. So she sleeps a lot. I mentioned it to the dr at her 15 month appt, and she didn't think it was a problem, some kids just sleep more than others.

My older son was exactly this way - it was wonderful! My younger son has never been too keen on two naps a day and converted to just one long nap in the afternoon very early on. The older one transitioned to one nap somewhere between 16 and 18 months. Both of them always enjoyed a solid 12 hours at night. Enjoy it while it lasts!
