Hi ladies, I am in need of a little advice. My husband and I have a horrible mattress. I can barely stand up straight. We know we need to buy a new one - yet there are so many different ones. I don't want to spend the money only to have regrets later. Do any of you have a mattress that you would recommend? Thank you!

I know you have a ton of responses all ready...but, I was just talking to my chiropractor about this issue a few days ago. He suggests a medium firm, no pillow top and a great warranty. He said that all of his clients that have a sleep number or memory foam love them, but that they aren't necessary for a good rest.

I stayed in a hotel that had sleep number beds and did not like it at all. If you want to try the temperpedic-type mattress without spending the big bucks, my parents got a mattress topper and put it over their 20 year old mattress. They love it and when they get around to it, will probably buy the whole mattress. My mom is always complaining about everything being too hot, but she hasn't about that mattress topper. Good luck!

I didn't like how far I sank into the temperpedic mattress and it was hot in the summer. I have a baseline sleep number mattress with a memory foam topper my husband found at Sam's club. I really like the set up. You can still adjust the firmness but still have the cushion of a temperpedic type mattress.

I've been happy with my Tempur Pedic. My parents have one also and so does my sister. I think they make them a little softer these days, which is a good thing because ours is a little firm for my liking. My husband weighs more than me (I'm pretty petite) so his body weight helps him sink down and have it curve to his body more, which works well for him. He loves it and has no complaints. I've enjoyed it as well, but I'm glad they make them a little softer now (I think).

Just after getting married two years ago, my husband and I went through the same thing. I have bad back pain and we wanted to spend money on a good quality mattress. We spent weeks looking. We ended up purchasing a king-sized sleep number bed...about $2500. THE WORST MISTAKE!!!! My back pain is worse, and the bed sucks! It sinks in the middle and is so uncomfortable. The company's solution.... You should've purchased a higher-end one. We got a 5000 series, definately not the lowest. They go up to 7000...which is comparable to the actual price. I would rather sleep on the couch. Sometimes I do.

We have a tempurpedic. It takes about a month or so to get use to it. It conditions you to sleep on your back. We have had our 3 or 4 years now. What I like most is that you don't have to flip it. It also holds in body heat so you sleep with a sheet or a light blanket. A bottom sheet is all thats really needed for sleeping with an indian/mexican blanket on top and it keeps me very comfortable. I bought the pillows too. I have to use a thin pillow underneath to raise my head so my arms don't fall asleep due to upper kneck and shoulder issues. I would recommend it but remember--it takes time for you to get use to it. Hope this helps.

You already have a ton of responses, but I noticed one thing missing...We have a Tempurpedic bed and for the most part my husband and I love it. It did take about a month to get used to it because it just feels so different. But what I wanted to mention is that it is very uncomfortable if you are a tummy sleeper. My husband likes to sleep on his stomach, even though he knows that it is bad for his back. Sleeping on your stomach on a Tempurpedic matress will REALLY hurt your back, so if you are a tummy sleeper I would try something else.

Hello!
Just my two cents after all your responses : ) We were in the same situation in March.
We found the sleep number set up we would have liked too expensive. I guess if one could buy at one of their sales it would not be too bad. We have two sets of friends though, who swear by their sleep number beds and would never go back.
I found that the tempurpedic mattress adjusted too slowly to a change in position when I tried it in the store.
We ended up buying a latex mattress from the Roomstore that we both love. It is just right and right right in price as well.
Hope this helps!

We've never tried the Tempurpedic, but we love the sleep number bed. We had a 30-day money-back guarantee so that is what got us to try it. I don't think I could have spent the money otherwise. I'm sure they still offer it. My husband always woke up with a back ache. A friend with years of similar complaints told us about it and we have enjoyed it from day one. My husband never knew he could ever wake up without a back ache. We've had it for 8 years or more.

I think mattresses are a personal thing. Some people like hard, some like soft, etc. My advice is to make sure you can return it after a trial period. We had the same problem with our old mattress and just bought a new one. It is really hard to tell if you like a mattress while laying on it for a few minutes in the store. (Or should I say if your back will like it in the morning.) Just make sure you can get your money back if you don't like it after a trial period.

Good luck!

Go to Sleep America. They have this wonderful machine that analyzes how your body lays on a mattress. Then it prints out exactly what type of bed is best for you. As far as the Temp vs # bed. The sleep # bed kind of sucks. Many of my family members have tried it and actually had to return them because they were so hard to get comfortable. Tempurpedics are great, but very pricey. What we do is get a really great pillow top mattress and then put a tempurpedic topper on top of it. Even the generic brands work really well. The one thing about a temp is that if you have a tendency to get over heated at night anyway it might not be the best thing for you. The great thing is that Sleep America can help you find the perfect bed for you.

I am glad a lot of the expensive mattress companies have some satisfaction guarantees. Whatever you do...be sure you can return it if you do not like the bed.
I have heard that the chemicals in the space foam (Tempurpedic...and or immitators) can be very bothersome to some people. I had a pillow made of the stuff and had to get rid of it.

We have had a Sleep number bed for almost 9 years. We got the contoured neck pillows to go with it nad it is awesome. My husband likes a very hard bed and I like softer. It is worth the money. We have moved it several times and have never had a problem with it. When my mom visits she can't wait to nap on our bed.

Do not buy a sleep number bed. My husband and I spent over $3000.00 for a sleep number bed and ended up returning it because it was so uncomfortable. Go with the Tempurpedic bed. Tempurpedic has different models of the bed so take your husband and try them out.

Good luck,

I just bought a Tempurpedic yesterday! It is being delivered today. While I can't tell you how the mattress feels yet, I love their pillows! I did want to let you know that we got a bunch of free stuff from Mattress Firm when we bought it. Because Tempurpedic sets the price-- all the stores are the same-- they give you incentives to get you to buy it at their store. I ended up getting 2 free Tempurpedic pillows (worth $99 each), 4 free pillow covers (2 queen, 2 standard), a mattress pad (worth $119), a queen-size bed frame (worth $119), and free delivery and set up. Sleep America was willing to give me about the same, but with a set of expensive sheets instead of the bed frame. The mattress was very expensive, but I am hoping it will be worth it since I have so many sleep problems and pain. There are some great reviews of the Tempurpedics on http://www.epinions.com/. Someone else mentioned the chemical smell-- from what I have heard and researched, this will go away within about 30-45 days. The salesman told me it helps to put an open box of baking soda under the bed, or a cut up apple on the night stand. Don't know if it works, but I will update this and let you know once I get it.

Go to Bed Mart in SanTan and talk to Sean. We had a sleep number bed from the beginning of time and loved it. But, when we were ready to upgrade to a king size, we wanted to check out the other options out there now. We always thought the Temprupedic are so hard. Tempurpedic is a rubber foam matress, Sean told us about the new latex foam from Origins, that is cooler, softer yet firm and holds up longer than the older rubber foam. They are spendy but we feel it is worth every cent. The biggest problem we have with the new bed is that we hate to get out of it. Good thing we are both retired.

Hi M.,

I have a Posture-tempurpedic absolutly worth every single penny, i wish I would have gotten the king size.

My dad has a sleep Number bed and I slept in that bed for a month, does not even compare to the Posture-tempurpedic. My dad and his wife stayed with us for two nights and they didn't want to get out of our bed. They wished they would have invested in the Posture-temurpedic bed.

Another reason we got this bed was because i'm a very light sleeper, so when my husband gets out of bed it wakes me up. The first night we had the bed my husband got up to go to work and I didn't even notice. It doesn't transfer motion, with the sleep number I could feel the transfer of motion whenever my husband got out or in the bed. Everyone sleeps differently I would definatly get one of those promos where you could take it back after 30-90 days or so.

Me- I have scoliosis
Husband- Herniated disc in the lower back
Dad- 4 Deteriorded discs in his lower back
DAd's wife- 6 months Prego.. LOL!

I really hope this helps with your decision

Hi M.,
We got a sleep number bed a few months ago, and I have to say I love it. After years of waking up with a backache, I wake up feeling great. Also, my hand or arm sometimes would fall asleep with our old bed. No more. My husband has his set at 70, me at 40. Not possible with any other kind of bed. I also like that when my husband rolls over, I don't feel the bed move at all. The only thing to be aware of is that the exact middle of the bed is foam, so if you want to sleep "spooning" the tempurpedic might be a better option. The middle isn't uncomfortable, it just isn't adjustable.

I love my Tempurpedic! My husband used to sell them and as soon as we could afford it we got one of our own, as kind of a housewarming gift to ourselves. You've already read how it takes a while to get used to them - about a month. This is true, especially the pillows. It was worth it to me. Also what everyone says about them retaining heat is true. But we also bought the mattress protector (which cost us $75, but it protects so well, and can withstand the heat of washing and drying on the hottest settings time and time again - we've had it 2.5 years so far) has helped with the heat factor quite a bit. And I love that my kids can jump on the bed (not that we encourage that but...you know the lil ones can't resist) and there's absolutely no effect on it whatsoever. Not to mention, the 20-year guarantee was pretty reassuring to us. Very nice!

I hope your alignment problems get resolved very soon - that can be so painful. (I definitely recommend a chiropractor.) And happy mattress shopping!

Hi, M.. This past January my husband and I invested in a tempurpedic bed. I have fibromyalgia and my husband has had back surgery. It was the best investment we ever made! It was pricy, but they come with a 20 year guarantee. There are different firmness options that fit you. We both are able to get a full nights sleep for the first time in years! I don't flip/flop all night and he doesn't wake up with a back ache anymore. We both can move and even get up and the other one doesn't feel the bed move at all. Our bed was expensive, but in the long run has saved us dollars at the doctor's office, chiropractors and popping pain pills. We went and tried all the other kinds of beds out there and found this one to be best for us. Good luck with your search.

We spent a lot of time in stores resting on the mattresses for 15 minutes as recommended. I would recommend taking one home where you can try it out for 15-30 days to make sure you like it. We have a temperpedic and I regret it now. Next time I am going to spend the money and get a Sleep Number! it really is a personal preference. I know a few people who like the Temperpedic. I feel it is a little to hard.

M.,
I have slept on a Sleep Number bed for a couple of nights and i own a Tempurpedic. The sleep number bed to me feels like a normal mattress that you can change from firm to soft(which is a great feature) and the tempurpedic feels like nothing you have ever slept on before. I love my tempurpedic. I do not however like firm mattresses. I love the support that the mattress offers with out feeling stiff. It does sleep a little warmer than a normal mattress because it uses your body heat to activate the foam. (It is a little stiffer in the winter when it is colder) It does take a little getting used to when turning over. You can't just roll over you kind of have to lift and roll a little but I don't even notice it now. We have had ours for about 3-4 years and have loved it. They have many new kinds now so you might want to try them out and ask lots of questions. We used our tax return to buy it and in my opinion it was the best thing we have bought with our tax return in a long time. Hope it helps!

Hi M.,
You've gotten so many responses so far (wow), I didn't read them all, so I hope I'm not being repetitious.

The technologies for both the Sleep Number and Tempurpedic beds came from the medical and science industries. We used both in my hopital to either prevent or heal pressure ulcers ("bed sores"), and in my experience, both were excellent at doing that.

If you don't have any major health concerns, though, it's all going to come down to personal preference and price. Even with all my experience with these kinds of beds, my husband and I still got just an ordinary mattress from the Denver Mattress Co. and are very happy (even through 2 pregnancies, it's still holding up well!). Ordinary mattresses last up to 10 years, especially if you invest in a decent brand, and turn them regularly.

The only problem with it is that it ruins all other beds. When I go stay with someone else or at a hotel I don't sleep very well because I can really tell the difference between that bed and my bed! I don't know about the sleep number, but my husband and I bought a tempurpedic about 4 years ago and it was expensive, and a waste of money! There are so many problems with it, it says like sleeping on a cloud more like an alter. They say is holds in the body heat boy does it you can wake up so frikn hot it sucks. My back hurts more than ever. My husband loved it at first but as the years have passed he hates it more and more. We have been trying to sell it cause it is so expensive and we cant afford another one until we do. I miss my old bed! I want a new bed.

Dont get me wrong everyone is different you may love it. Bed Mart gave us 90 days. However, it took too long to break it in by the time we felt we didnt like it, it was too late.

So if anyone wants a King Size Tempurpedic for $1750 OBO we paid $2300 we would be glad to get rid of it.

We have a Tempurpedic bed and I have to say that my hubby loves it. It totally got rid of any back pain that he had. I don't mind it. I would rather a full wave water bed, but this is a good bed. Here is a HUGE plus for me, it does not get bed bugs. To me that is worth it's weight in gold! We have had ours for years and there is no smell. All of my kids want one! If they were cheeper, I would get it for them. We really considered getting one for our 2yr old because he sleeps so well on it, but we can't spend that much right now on a bed. I would say go to the stores and sit and lay on the different ones and see what suits you best. Just remember with the tempurpedic bed, it seems stiff, but really is not. You have to actually lay there for a couple of minutes and roll over and such to feel the difference. Good Luck!

Yes MA'AM!

I love my mattress. It is not a tempurpedic, but it is like one. It is a lot cheaper (knock off brand) and just as good. We give it to everyone when they come to visit. They love it! I notice a difference if I sleep on a coil mattress (kids room). I wake up hurting all the time. My mom has fibromyalgia and when she sleeps on my bed she sleeps through the night without waking up. Everyone who has stayed on it has their problems temporarily go away.

That being said, my chiropractor recommended the sleep number bed because he said the memory foam breaks down over time because of sweat. We still bought the memory foam one though. I just couldn't see spending all that money on an air mattress (sleep number bed).

I don't have either bed, but am a flight attendant, and some of the hotels we stay in have the sleep number. I can't think of what hotel chain has these beds off hand, but that might be a way for you to try the bed for a night to see if it is something you and your husband like. i hate it. i would rather have a regular spring mattress than the sleep number. The mattress doesn't have any give. it kinda feels like you're sleeping on an over inflated air mattress.

best of luck.

I bought a Sleep by Number about 5 yrs ago and wouldn't trade it for anything. I have a double bed (my husband is dead) and I like to use the whole thing. Sometimes I like it softer than other times so I change the setting from time to time. There is nothing more luxurious than this. Have been told by someone who has the Tempurpedic that it is too hot and yes it holds its shape. But, the sleep by number supports your waist area as well as it supports your shoulders, legs, etc. It adjusts immediately if you move and for the first time in my life, I can sleep comfortable and wake refreshed. I have lots of back problems due to an auto accident and this mattress is the best thing that ever happened to me. Suggest you phone them (800 no) and they will send you a DVD and a $50 coupon. This mattress is one of the few things I have tried that lives up to its ads.

Just a little warning about Tempurpedic or any other memory foam mattress. They retain your body heat and can become very warm or even hot to sleep on. We did not purchase the Tempurpedic because we were warned of this but we did purchase the Sealy Posturpedic with memory foam. It has a pillowtop on top of the memory foam to allow for air circulation. My husband doesn't have any problems with getting too hot and it is great for our backs. I am having some trouble with getting too hot at night but then I am pre-memopausal so it's hard to blame the mattress totally:)
My parents have a Sleep Number bed and they really like theirs. The top padding has broken down and they have had to add a down tick pad on top but they have probably had it 15 years and I'm sure improvenments have been made since then.
Hope you get lots of good advice. Picking out a mattress is harder that picking out a car. Good Luck!

We have a sleep number bed we've used for years and it has been great. When we moved, we put that in the guest room (wanted a nice bed for aging parents, etc) and got ourselves a new bed. We wanted to love the tempurpedics, but were too worried about the off gassing and the synthetic materials. We opted for a real latex rubber bed (not synthetic latex, but the actual rubber from the tree). We LOVE it. You don't have to turn it, don't need a special frame, etc. They can be pricey, but we found a place online that was very reasonable and had good customer service.
