my 14mth old son has always been a good sleeper/napper, and has been in a routine since 6 weeks old.. this routine has obviously adapted as he's moved through different developmental phases and it would seem he is now trying to drop his morning sleep.. usually 2- 3 hrs after waking in the morning and usually goes for 1 to 1 1/2 hrs...occasionally he would miss this nap and i would get him to have his afternoon nap at 1.30pm instead of 2pm... but he is so cranky by 12-12.30 that lunch is difficult and when he does sleep it's for two hours and he wakes up around 3.30pm and can't make it to usual bed time of 7.30pm... so i'm no longer sure of how to direct the napping time..do i still try and get the morning nap when he just lies there and talks or do i try and bring afternoon nap closer to lunch time, but then how will he last the afternoon without being too tired and cranky...and does this mean an earlier bedtime?? very lost and have no idea what other mothers do at this point...thanks

What can I do next?

Hi A.,

My daughter was usually really good about taking late morning naps, then one day she just decided that it wasn't for her anymore! So what I did was I pushed lunch back to an earlier time, about 11:30ish then after lunch I would lay her down for a nap. She usually stays alseep until 2:30 or 3:00. In the morning I try to keep her really busy, take her to park or something, so this way she is READY for a rest and relaxation time! If she sleeps no later than about 3 o clock she is also more than READY for bedtime at 8:30! Good luck. This too shall pass! :o)

My daughter is 18 months. She awakes no latter than 7:30 in the morning. I give her an early lunch at around 11 am. At 11:30 she takes a nap. She will awake at 2:30 and is back down for the night at 8. Sometimes I let her have lunch after her nap. I keep her busy in the morning so that when it is nap time she is worn out and ready to go. I think one good nap a day is the way to go. Try putting him down eariler and see how he does.

When my son did this we adopted an earlier lunch time, 11-11:30, then he went down for a 2-3 hour nap around 12-12:30. This didn't seem to have an impact on bedtime.

Good luck!

Hi, I'm chiming in with my twins(15months) nap schedule. I hated to see that morning nap go but now we have a great schedule of up at 7am-ish lunch 11:30-ish and nap 12-2ish and bedtime at 7pmish. It's been a wonderful thing. These are my 5th and 6th kids and most of my kids went to this type schedule after a while. it's not written in stone but it's working out for the time being. LaurieK

My Daughter wen through the same stage. We put her on a sleep schedule at 4 months and were in sleep heaven. Then she began doing the same thing.
This is what worked for us:
I moved lunch up a half an hour(though she has always eaten on demand) and put her down for her nap between 12 and 12:30.
Then in the afternoon when I knew she was getting tired or a little overwhelmed we put music on in her room and told her that she needed to stay in her room and play until the music was over.
This gave her some alone time and me a break. There were even times I would go in and she was asleep. Of course she was on the floor since she was in a crib still...I would pick her up and put her to bed. We have also put on a DVD in her play room with the same encouragement to stay.
We did have to move bed time up, we just put her down when she was showing signs of being ready. Minor adjustments.
Now she is three and we are adjusting the time the other way...a little later in the evening. She goes down between 7:30 and 8...when she was 14 months it was 6 - 6:30.

Good Luck!

Its normal that he isnt wanting to take a late morning nap. Some babies give them up all together, and only have the 1 nap in the afternoon. To help lunchtime, I would try giving lunch a little earlier, followed by an early afternoon nap. When my daughter was his age, she continued to take a late afternoon nap between 4 and 5, but I wouldnt let her sleep longer than an hour. She also went to bed between 7:30 and 8:00. Each child is different, so his bedtime may need to be a tad bit later. Hope this helps some.

My daughter basically dropped her first morning nap at about a year old. She used to wake up at around 830 and then take her first nap at 1030 or so. she'd wake up in time for lunch at 12, only to go back down around 2ish for a second nap. Now, she takes one nap right after lunch. Usually around 12:30 or 1. That nap can be anywhere from an hour to two 1/2 hours, depending on how she feels. I'd try the nap after lunch. But go with when he feels tired!

I have 3 kids and my youngest is 15 months. My suggestion is, if he is not sleeping at his morning nap then let him stay up and try to get him to sleep close to lunch. Then put him to bed by about 7 or 8pm in the evening. My 15 month use to take 2 naps a day too and it really does very on his naps. He always takes a morning nap, at the same time he also wakes up at 6:45am and morning nap is at 9am. Sometimes he does take anywhere from a 15min to 1 hour nap at about 4pm and goes to bed anywere from 6 to 8pm. Try just the afternoon nap first.
