Sleeping with a Pillow?

Hi, I am just wondering when you should/could start using a pillow for my daughter to lay her head on when she sleeps. She is 18 months old, right now she sleeps in her crib without a pillow. She walks very well and has good coordination. But she loves to lay her head on pillows, when she's on our bed(just to visit/play, never sleeps with us) or on the couch. I'm thinking I can give her a pillow to sleep on when she moves to a toddler bed. Am I correct? I'm not sure what the rule is on this. Thank you.

What can I do next?

I gave my son one at 18 months...I had one that was really flat and not real fluffy and he loves it..if you have an old warn down one they are the best mostly because its not going to give them any extra help to try and get out of there crib. Good luck :)

Hi D.,
My son is 15 months old now and he has been sleeping on a pillow for probably 4 months now. He loves it!
So I guess if you think your daughter would like one and she is ready you should definitely get one.
Good luck

My son is 20 months. He has had a full size pillow in his bed for at least 6 months. He didn't use it for a while and most of the time he ends up on the other end of the crib, but he loves it. It has a pic of his cousin on it (it was a photo gift from WalMart). I have never seen any issues with it at all.

she's old enough. Just make it a kid size one the isn't extremely fluffy. My son got his when he was 3 and moved into his bed, but that is only because he didn't care to have one. I think she would be fine.

I gave my son one at 20 months because he had a cold & the Dr. said he'd do well to sleep on an incline...

By that age both of my boys were using pillows, but they were also in a toddler bed. I don't think I ever put one in the crib, but I don't see how it would make much difference. I think the rule of thumb is that they have to be big enough to alter the way that they sleep if they feel uncomfortable. At 18 months I would say that most children are capable. You could try it at nap time since you are a SAHM and watch her to see how she does. This might help ease your mind.

I spoke to my kids doctor about it and her only concern was having anything inside the crib my son could use to help climb out.

yes, your child is ready for a pillow. shes 18 months? as long as she can physically move/reposition herself (has no physical/serious movement inabilities), then shes ready.
