Sleeping with a Pillow

Hi Moms,
I have a one year old son and am wondering at what age is it ok to start allowing them to sleep with a heavier blanket and a pillow? Right now I just dress him warm for bed and put him to sleep with a baby blanket. During playtime, I sometimes put a soft pillow on the floor and he loves to lay on it and rest his head when he gets sleepy.

What can I do next?

I started to give my son a pillow once he was able to get up on his own. Meaning like stand up! I first started off with a little soft pillow and then moved up at he got older. My son now 2 sleeps with a full size bed pillow and a blanket. Hope that helps. D.

I gave my son a pillow at about 1 year. It isn't very fluffy or anything. He started waking up in the middle of the night and woudld not go back to sleep. And, as we know we're not supposed to, we brought him in bed with us. Each time, he would steal our pillows and sleep on them. So, I thought maybe he was just not comfortable in his bed. I know I am not comfortable without a pillow. Once we gave him one, I think it helped. He has slept on it ever since. He is the same, loves to lay on the pillows in the living room too. He will even lay and relax and watch cartoons with a pillow too. I let him do this sometimes in the morning when he is tired, but he doesn't usually take morning naps anymore. I say, give it a try, it definitely won't hurt him.

I was too afraid to put my son to sleep on a pillow at night until he was 3 years old. He slept so soundly and I was afraid he would roll over and not realize he couldn't breathe. That was just me though and my situaiton. Even at 3 my son really didn't like using a pillow. He is now 4 and just starting to like it. I think every situation is different- you know your child. I don't think he is ready for one at 1 though. I would wait awhile!

I gave my daughter a pillow at about 15 months. I bought a small travel pillow (walmart or kmart) and took about 1/2 of the stuffing out. At first she didnt sleep on it. But after about a month she started sleeping onit. Now she is 2 and she always sleeps on her pillow ( I kept the stuffeing and stuffed it back with most of the stuffing.

I always covered up my daughter with a blanket. As soon as the baby can roll over and lift their head - blankets and pillows are not a problem/ I would give the baby a warm blanket.

I gave my son a pillow at around 18 mths which is when he switched to his big bed. I always covered him with a light blanket at night when he was in his crib. I think they say the risk of SIDS is gone at around 18 mths old.

Hi J.,

I started my son with a travel pillow at about 18 months. It isn't as high as a regular pillow so his neck's not overly bent. He's had a blanket in his crib since he was probably 12 months, but he always kicks it off. As long as your son can move the blanket off himself if he wants to or push the pillow aside, I say go for it. There's no reason we shouldn't let them be comfortable, too! Good luck and Happy Holidays!!!

I have a 19month old and I let him have a pillow at 12 months. If he is able to lift is head on his own steadly and strong should be an issue then he should be ok. As far as the blanket I gave my son one but he always kicks it off so I still dress him warm.

I gave my son a pillow fairly early because he had reflux and the wedge was not high enough. As far as the blankets go my son has 3 or 4 in bed with him. A home made fleece one, a baby size version of the home made one, one of those heavy ones that have satin around the edges and another fuzzy one. Plus he has his sheets and a blanket on his big boy bed. Now obviously he doesn't use all the blankets. He has them on his sides, at the foot of the bed etc. The pillow is fairly flat. I notice that when he is on his side it's perfect for his shoulder height from the bed so his head isn't kinked...
Hope that helped! Good luck!
Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!
