I hear the Moby slings are terrific and verasitile, I saw another woman using it at the aquarium while walking 2 other toddlers - and boy is that the ultimate test...the baby seemed comfortable and the woman stated she was...I am not due til November, so I won't be able to tell you how it feels til then, but if you get it, please let me know....I've ordered mine and can't wait to use it! ;-)

I loved my Hug A Monkey sling. As my babies grew I was still about the use the sling. They could sit on my hip when they were older or ride on my back. I miss it now that my daughter is two and a half. My brother and his wife just had a baby in February and they begged me for my Hug A Monkey!! lol I bought one of the organic cotton ones.

I love the Mei Tei. I can put my 13 month old on my back and do dishes, or whatever without having him on my front. So that would work out good for your 10 mth old. Otherwise I love the ring sling. they can be adjusted.

Hi Tracey
Go to babywearer.com
they have a wealth of information about slings and other types of carriers
I have a ring sling and a mai tai and actually prefer the mai tai after my son turned 4 months because the sling was painful on my shoulder whilst the mai tai was like a soft back or front pack and you can keep your hands really free.

I cannot tell you how much I LOVE Moby Wraps. They are comfortable, colorful, and offer many different wrapping choices as your child grows. They are not as expensive as some slings, and you can make your own with absolutely no talent (like me!).

Check Moby Wraps out on their website, but if you'd like to make one, here's a quick rundown. Buy 5 yards of Jersey fabric at a fabric store. Cut it longways down the middle so you have two 5 yard pieces. You're done! That's it! Now you have one for you and one for a friend.

I also have a BabyBjorn (expensive and UNCOMFORTABLE!) and a BabyHawk (beautiful, but kind of awkward). I didn't start using the BabyHawk until my daughter was walking, then she didn't want to be in one anymore. I'll try with baby two.

The Ergo is working really well for us. My kids are 4.5 months and 20 months. The head cover is great to provide extra support for my younger child when I need to bend down for his brother. It makes a great sun shade as well when we're walking outside.

mothering magazine (a warm and wonderful resource in itself) has a great 20 page booklet about babywearing and slings. It is actually on sale at the moment!

the babyhawk is the best! (www.babyhawk.com) it's much better than the Ergo, lighter, easy to put on, you can wear it on your front or back. it folds small so you can stick it in a diaper bag. it doesn't have buckles, just ties, so you don't need to adjust any "settings" for different size adults wearing it. it's from newborn to 40lbs. i've used it extensively with my daughter, now it sits in the closet as i'm pregnant, but I plan to use it even more with #2, once she is born in Oct :)

If you are looking for a sideways sling, the slingling is pretty good too. the one thing I don't like about it, is that it hangs on your shoulder, so you are not really able to lift that arm up and down too much, that's why i prefer the carrier. Slinglings are on mamabargains.com sometimes for 60%, you just have to watch for them.

good luck!

I got an Ergo Baby Carrier with my third and swear that was my favorite purchase (next to my Arms Reach Cosleeper). I STILL use it and my son will be 2 in a couple of weeks.

PS I was looking at the Baby Hawk and can tell you I saw a major piece I would miss about my Ergo...the napping hood. The times I most often still use the carrier is when my son is sleeping. With the napping hood, his head stays against me...not flopping around plus it shields him from light. I have nursed him while in public in the Ergo Baby Carrier because the hood is such a great, useful part. Nobody could see! :) In addition you can wear the child on your front, back and side.

If you are breastfeeding you may want to consider a ring sling, as they are really adjustable.

I've also heard that the maya wrap is great, but haven't tried it yet.

If you want more of a carrier and something that will be less back/neck pressure as the baby grows the beco carrier is great. It puts all the weight on your hips and you hardly feel the baby. I just got one for my 6 week old as she already weighs 11 pounds pounds and the ring sling was getting harder for long periods of time.

Hi,

My only sling experience is a Hotsling. It is not adjustable so you have to measure/size before you order (they give directions). I had read that for first-time baby wearers the non-adjustable ones are easier. I have friends though who love the adjustable ones that wrap. My sling was a lifesaver with the baby chasing a busy toddler. If you know anyone you can borrow one from to try out though that might be a good idea.

You've gotten some very good suggestions for baby carriers but you might want to try them on first. Check out www.quirkybaby.com. The owner knows everything there is to know about baby carriers and if you don't mind driving to Princeton, you can go to her for a consultation and try on all the different carriers to find the best one for you.
