Hi , my daughter has always had a slow time having bowel movements. On a good basis she will go every other day. Her appetite has never been good but she is breastfed and I find that she will use the breastfeed as a way to "hold her over" enough to where she doesn't have to eat a whole meal. We just got over a cold where she was only having liquids and barely any solids she had a normal bowel movement 3 days ago and her appetite had picked up. Now on day 4 of no bowel movement were finding a low appetite again and refusal of foods. Yesterday she had a cup of prune juice , 2 servings of blackberries lots of water some milk and regular foods. She takes biogaia the probiotic in her milk when she will drink milk but this doesn't seem to help. It affects her appetite when it goes on this many days and we are out of season here in Toronto of her "go to" constipation fix which is fresh slices of peaches. What foods can I encourage my PICKY daughter to help bowel movements ? she's not really into whole grain pastas she can taste the difference and will not even take a bite. Vegetables are sometimeish depending on what they are yesterday she loved some boiled carrots and hated her boiled asaparagus .. Any ideas ??

What can I do next?

Sometimes getting too much fiber is hard on them too. Our pediatrician has us give the kiddo's Miralax every day for 4 days when they're blocked up. If it's bad they drink it twice per day for 4 days then drink it once per day for up to 10 days.

But they have blockages than can get to the point of possible surgery. I'd ask the doc if Miralax is something they'd be comfortable prescribing.

We mix it in grape Koolaid and the kids drink it right down.

What's wrong with frozen peaches, let 'em thaw. You can also give apple juice, prune juice, . Having slow BM'S may be normal for her. Appetite may slow down because she is still full , no pun intended, until she gets rid of what is already there. Pasta I would stay away from until she goes, making sure she gets plenty of water , it helps the flow of things. If you are going to continue breastfeeding, watch what you eat as well.

Cherries are a great laxative - you might be able to get some frozen ones.

And try taking her off dairy completely for a while and see if that helps - dairy is, as my mother would say, the great constipator - it's like glue for the digestive tract for some people. It doesn't sound like she drinks much anyway, so try to eliminate milk and cheese (real yogurt with live cultures like Stonyfield Farms is good) and see if that helps. Maybe try some plain yogurt with thawed, frozen cherries mixed in?

Prunes themselves. Oranges and orange juice. For myself if I'm having tummy troubles I start eating a bowl of cereal and that helps the fiber in most cereals help bind tthings as well as move the out.

Give her a graham cracker everyday . It helps move things along . Also , warm liquids are better than cold . If she likes warm apple juice , start her day with that (not full strength, add water). good luck :)

My son gets bad diarrhea when he drinks a glass of apple juice really fast. I don't buy apple juice, never have, but when we are out at a restaurant, he will order it, drink the glass down, and then gets diarrhea.

I finally understand why the doctor was telling me to give my constipated 6 month old apple juice.

avoid carrots at all costs. You need to stick with the "p" foods, peaches, pears, plums, peas, etc.

But if she isn't going at all, give her some apple juice. It will flush the system quickly.

How about pears? The doctor told me pears are a great way to keep my son regular. He loves them. Will she eat canned peaches? They do have them with regular juice versus the heavy syrup. I also have a problem with my son wanting to eat.
