Small Bumps on Toddler... Baffled.

My 17 mth old daughter has small bumps all over her torso. They aren't red, there are no heads on them, they do not hurt her, but after a couple of weeks having them she has started to scratch them occasionally, mostly in her sleep though. Honestly it just makes you think of goosebumps when you manage to see them. (I say manage because unless you get just the right light and angle you can't tell they're there unless you're touching her skin.) Anyone know what it might be? The most we can figure is that its dry skin because of winter which we have been keeping lotion on her.

Lil extra info before anyone asks: she isn't on any medicine, I haven't been using anything different to wash her or her clothes, and she hasn't had any new food.

Thanks for any feed back!

Was she sick at all recently? This happened to my son when he was 2 and it was deemed a "viral rash" by the ped. It happened a short time after he had a cold. The rash lasted for a few months, but eventually it went away. But what you are describing (goosebump-looking, not red at all, torso area) is exactly what he had. Didn't bother him at all, thankfully.

Molluscum maybe? Take her to the doctor to be sure. I wouldn't put anything else on them until you see the pediatrician. Hydrocortizone can actually make molluscum worse.

It sounds like eczema. My 17 month old has this currently on her sides. Like you I cannot see the bumps but can feel them. My pediatrician recommended aquaphor or cetafil lotion.

It may be a heat rash if she is getting too warm as she sleeps. If she is wearing the footed pjs, they may not breath enough and lock in the sweat when she gets too warm. Our kids would get real sweaty in them. If you think that might be it, switch to cotton pjs and try putting some cornstarch (instead of baby powder) on her after her bath and see if it helps. Johnsons and Johnsons has baby powder that is pure cornstarch but you can use what you have in the kitchen cabinet. It is also great when their little bottoms become gaulded from the heat in the summertime.

My daughter has this and it is eczema. The doctor recommended Aquafor cream or Gold Bond. Gold Bond has a version with menthol that they call "anti-itch". But I would start with the plain Gold Bond since sometimes my daughter said the menthol actually hurt her skin a bit (I guess too cooling).
We also noticed that when she comes out of the bath the patches are redder than the rest of the skin which is not the case when she has not been in a hot bath.

It is a skin virus. Many kids have it. It is typically harmless and will go away after several months. However, it is also somewhat contagious if the skin is broken, so discourage the scratching is possible.

I also suggest eczema. My granddaughter who is now 12 has had eczema since she was a baby. She does have patches of rash that itch terribly but her whole skin feels rough to the touch with little mostly invisible bumps. The allergist said that the skin of someone with eczema can change to being this way. I'd take her to a dermatologist for a diagnosis. Or if she has allergies to a pediatric allergist.

My daughter has sensitive skin and she would have breakouts just like what you described. I took her to her ped. and he gave her a cream. It made the rash go away within a day! I use it periodically when she gets a rash and it works.

Just because you have not changed anything that you can think ouf doesn't mean she hasn't developed an irritation to it. Have it checked out.

Good luck.

My 4yo has small bumps on her arms. You can't see them but can feel them. She has super sensitive skin and it only happens during the winter. It's from the house being too dry and her skin is drying out. If I put a good thick lotion on her every night it goes away. But it's just about impossible to get her to agree to putting lotion on every night. She does scratch it when it gets really bad and then I'm pretty adamant about putting on the lotion.
