Snowsuit for 17 Month Old?

My daughter is 17 months old and I can't decide if I should get her a snowsuit for this winter? I don't really see us playing out in the snow, as she seems to young for that (snowballs, etc.). Just curious on other mom's perspectives/experience.

I did find a good deal on an Osh Kosh 2T -- thinking she could also wear it next year?

What can I do next?

I had my girls out younger than that in snow...it's lots of fun and who wants to be stuck inside all winter! I like the previous ideas of snow pants or even layering because it is true at that age they won't be out very long. And you will definitely get use out of whatever you get with #2 because next winter you'll be out more with the older one. There are little plastic sleds you can by that are seat shaped with a buckle, those are fun for that age! I would also get snow stuff for you, cause with a little one I know I am down in the snow with them helping to make it fun! I was pregnant last winter and was able to wear snow pants lower beneath my belly and my winter coat fit around my belly almost the whole winter. (baby was born in May)

I would get it even if she jsut wanted to sit in the snow. Its a great sensory activity for them when they are that young. maybe just purchase her a pair of snow pants instead and then have a winter coat.

my son did not play outside last winter in the snow. he said it was too cold. If you want to get a snowsuit get one for cheap. may be go to a goodwill or consignment shop. another place to go is BJ's or sams. They usually have them for reasonable. The only other thing i am thinking is what if you would want to take her sledding or her relatives do? Good luck

I wouldn't bother.. once you get her all bundled up she will be too miserable to go outside! Even snow boots at that age are very difficult for them to walk in normally, much less in the snow. If you really want to, wait til the mid-late Jan when everything goes to 50% off! It hardly ever snows before that anyway. I would also try to buy one that will fit them next year, and you can just buy snow pants, not the whole suit.. You may want to get neutral colors too for the snow pants and boots, that way baby #2 can use them too!

Personally, I'd skip it. Get her some thermal underwear and a use her hat & coat. At that age it usually takes longer to dress them than the time they want to stay out in the snow anyway! (At least that's how it was for my son.)

I had muy kids in snowsuits then. My daughter is a summer birthday, so the 1st winter she was in, the 2nd she was out...and we have the cutest photos from that summer, playing in the snow! She had a one-piece snow suit that was terrific. (It may have been a hand-me-down.)

As for what she will be wearing next year...you can take a guess, but you never know. A 2T may be fine for next winter or, if she's growing quickly, she may need a bigger size. At that age my daughter was pretty true to age/size...but by a few years later, she was so tall that we had to adjust how we bought for her.

That first winter in the snow, besides just walking and laughing in the snow, she LOVED the toddler sled we would pull her on....

Have fun!

I don't think it's a matter of whether you child will play in the snow so much, but will your child go in the car, which will be cold until the heater kicks in? Will your daughter be carried outside in the winter? She needs to be warm. And if you don't get something that is too girly, and can be gender neutral, then you might be able to use it for #2 as well.

it depends on your kid. My first daughter loves everything, so we were out in the snow with her. my second is scared of everything, and would prefer to stay inside. so it wasn't worth bundling up my younger one because she was miserable!

anyway, if you go to target, snow pants are only $12! it can't hurt to buy a pair. If you wait until january, you may not find anything, at least not in the size you are looking for!

Also, I already bought waterproof mittens for my girls because last year i couldn't find any! they were not happy with their cotton stretchy gloves in the snow... they got soaked.

if you don't even want to spend $12 because you may not get to use them, check out craigslist. Anything from this area will be barely used! haha! or a consignment store... or buy it new and sell it yourself after #2 outgrows them.

Personally, I would buy one, perhaps not new, but a second hand one. Boots may not be necessary, but would still be good. There will likely be some days when you would like to play in the snow or pull her in a sled. Enjoy the snow, get some fresh air, there are some nice days you may want to take advantage of. You can also buy boots second hand that will look like new! Enjoy this winter, next year will be harder with a baby.

I think I brought each of my kids out in the snow once when they were that age so we really didn't need the suit. I think lots of layering would have been good enough. On the other hand you could get one that will fit next year also just in case! It is pain getting them all dressed up and keeping the mitts, hats, etc on.
