Hi Mama's,

My question is about my 4 1/2 month old son. We started him on rice cereal on December 22 and he really loved it. His dr. advised us to keep with the rice for other week or so (this was on Dec 28th)and then go to Oatmeal. We started Oatmeal last friday night. He really seems to enjoy this also. We are going to start veggie in another month. This brings me to my question, when should we start feeding him a morning meal? After we have gone through all of the veggie? I know it is to soon right now but I just wanted to get a round about time frame from all of the other newborn/infant parents out there. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Get yourself the book "super baby food" You can find it at any book store or online. It goes month by month explaining the best foods for your sweet little one and times to start those foods. It even explains how to feed them, and how not to feed them and what time of day to feed them, how much to feed them...basically any question possible is answered. It was my kitchen Bible for both my kids. If you don't already have it, GET IT! Today!
Have fun with your baby and don't rush things!

With both my boys we did rice cereal first for 3 to 5 days, then oatmeal, barley, and then finally mixed cereal. This took us just under a month to get through these. We started out with a small amount of cereal at breakfast, lunch, and dinner. At around 5 months we introduced veggies the same way as the cereal. 1 veggie for 3 to 5 days as children do have allergies to fruits and veggies. There are alot of fruits and veggies out there so this process takes a while but it's better to be safe than sorry in my opinion. We did veggies first as I have heard horror stories about doing fruits first and we made the right decision starting veggies first as both my boys love them still today at 5 and 9.

Use your best judgement and adjust accordingly...nobody knows your baby better than you do.

Good luck
S.

My peditrician suggested starting a morning meal at about 6 months, then about 8 months adding another meal then by 10 months having our daughter eating 3 meals a day. She is 11 months now and she does very well on it, she is completely on solids (even table foods now). At six months I just started introducing vegetables and moved to a mixed-grains cereal and/or oatmeal with bananas (just for some extra filling). This allowed us to eventually eliminate one bottle. Now she has just recently switched to whole milk and we have eliminated another bottle. All in all I think its just what works best for you. Consult with your doctor though at your six month check up, they really do know what's best! Good luck!

As soon as we started cereal we offered it as "breakfast" right after the morning bottle. Once we got to veggies, we offered them as lunch or dinner. Seems like mine were between 5 and 6 months when their bottles and baby food came at the same time (or just before) family meals.

I wondered the same thing myself. I am not sure if there is a right or wrong answer to this question or not. I think it is up to you based on your child's behavior and preferences. I started cereal and veggies at four months once a day at dinner time. I just recently (at 6.5 months) decided that i wanted to get my son on more of a "three meal a day" routine so I started with cereal in the morning (in addition to the veggie or cereal that I was already giving him at night for dinner). Then soon after I added fruit or veggie at lunch. Now he is eating his bottle first thing in the morning, cereal at his next feeding (with formula) then a fruit at lunch with a bottle, a late afternoon bottle, and then dinner (veggie or veggie with a meat) and a bottle for dinner. Then bed time. Its working great and he seems to be sleeping longer at night.
