Son Standing up to Pee...

Hi. My son will be three in February. He has been potty trained for about four months now. He started out sitting down all of the time and was a fast learner. After he flushed his "pee cup" from his potty seat down the toilet and we had to have the toilet removed to retrieve it I started to teach him to stand up to pee. (He still uses the potty seat when he has to go #2.) At first he would only stand up and pee if I aimed for him, but I've been making him "push it down" for a couple of days now. I really want him to be able to go to the potty by himself but he is making a disgusting mess of my bathroom! I would like to hear from other moms who've experienced this. At what point should I expect him to be able to go the potty without help? Thanks so much!

What can I do next?

When I potty trained my son, I sat him on the toilet seat backwards. As he grew tall enough, he was able to go standing up. But living with a husband and a teenaged son, the aiming training is still a problem. So I keep wipes by the toilet, and make them clean it up....

You might try putting a few Cheerios in the toilet water before he pees and have him try to "shoot" them.
This might help him to aim better.

Personally I'd keep him sitting at home and let him pee standing up when out in a public place. My boys are 9, 11, and 13 and they still make a mess. It smells and it disgusting. Also it ruins wood cabinets (just so you know).

I have twin boys so I know what you mean. I trained my boys with cheerios. Yes, Cheerios.lol Your probably like What!! I put cheerios in the toilet or potty chair and let them stand up and aim for them. It's fun for them but also training them at same time.

I've heard of people dropping a cheerio in the toilet and telling the child to aim for it. They think it is great fun.

It's just part of having a boy, those fun disgusting bathrooms!! My son had help standing for about the first 6-9 months. I would stand behind him and lean him forward so the pee went in the toilet. We have a long seat so it gives him lots more room. Finally, I had him start doing it by himself about the same time he could pee standing up without using the stepstool. He was probably almost 4.

Hello, My son will be 3 in January. Sometimes he likes to stand to pee and sometimes he likes to sit to pee. It is nice when he stands when we are out and about. He stands on his tiipy toes. Most of the time he makes it in. I know how frustrating it can be because I have a 15 yr. old to and that can be just as bad. LOL Be patient and the time will come. He's only going to be 3. GOOD LUCK

He will need your help and supervision for at least 6 months and after that, he will still need you to help wipe until he is about 5.
Have you tried having him stand to pee in his potty or just the toilet? He might be better able to get it in the toilet.
I've heard of people using Cheerios, putting one in the toilet and having them aim for it. It will take him a little practice.
Meanwhile, make him help with cleanup. I know it will seem like it is more work, but it will motivate him to try harder not to make a mess. And whenever he drips on the toilet, make him wipe it off with a swab of toilet paper.

My son is almost 8 and he still sits down to pee. He use to stand up but it no matter how good a boy's aim is, there will always be a splash out of the toilet. After discussing it with his grandpa, he decided when he was at home he wanted to sit down in the bathroom. The only time he stands up to pee is at school or in public restrooms. I really don't see any reason why guys have to stand up to pee. I have noticed that any guy who is at my house, leaves some sort of mess in the bathroom that I have to clean up and it is disgusting! So anyhow, if your son is more comfortable sitting down and can do that on his own, I wouldn't push the issue of him standing. Good luck!

Cheerios are your new best friend in this arena !
I kept a Dixie cup of them in the bathroom, and told my son
to put one in when he had to pee. Worked instantly !
The plus to this - not only does it keep the bathroom neater and cleaner, but you are fostering eye-hand coordination !

I have encouraged our son to sit... and always "hit the water", "I want to hear you hitting the water"... I have also encouraged my hubby to sit - "how often do you get to sit and take a break" GUESS WHAT??? The toilet seat is never left UP anymore!

I like the cheerio idea that many MANY others have posted!

Hi B....I'm probably being redundant, but are you aware of the cool thing they have at Wal Mart (and probably other places).....a training urninal!?! I wish I'd have had one with my boys. It's like a potty chair, but for boys to learn standing up. I'm not super familiar with it, as my most recent is a little girl, but I though, how neat is that? Why didn't someone think of that when my boys were younger!?!?! Good luck!!

A handful of Cheerios always worked for me when potty training both of my boys..let them throw them in and tell them they get to sink them. Then they would try their hardest to aim and sink. Just a little silly trick that worked for me. Good Luck

Do you use a stool for him? My sons stands on a stool in front of the toilet. Which makes it so when he pees it goes straight down. Also he has a much bigger area of the toilet to aim into because he is standing higher up. When I have seen him go he usually isnt even using his hands he just leans over and goes. Good Luck!

Good luck! Some adult men still have aiming issues! One fun idea is to toss a was of toilet paper into the toilet and then have your son try to sink the "ship" with his pee. Sometimes this works and it becomes a game. It may be funny for your little boy to watch his pee fly around the room, but hopefully sinking the ship is more fun!

I have 2 sons that are now 27 and 25. One had better aim than the other when they were little. My younger son needed help in the bathroom longer than my older one did. Hang in there; he will get it eventually.

Nothing wrong with sitting down to pee, my husband sits and he is 71. :-) When our boys were little I would put a circle of bright colored nail polish in the stool and they thought it was funny if they could hit the target.

My son was 2 in September and was also sitting to go to the bathroom. His pediatrician had an issue with this and said if he is using the toilet then he should be standing to pee. I have the same issue as you also he is too short to reach the rim. So I bought a stool for him to stand on. Well that raised him up too much and now he thinks it's great to stand there and move back and forth to watch the pee move. So if you get any great ideas I would love to know them also. I am a single mom and his father chooses not to see him so I am trying to figure this one out on my own.

Although not quite as messy about it anymore, our 6 yr old son still misses the toilet sometimes, not often. Anyhoo, your son is not even 3 so it's normal that he is doing this but have you tried one of the toddler seats that you place on top of the toilet seat? That way he could continue to sit down, just give him a stool if he can't get up there on his own. I have a friend who would tear off a square of toilet paper, throw it in the toilet and tell her son to hit it!! The good news is, my 14 yr old no longer makes a mess so it gets better at some point! Hang in there! You could also have him help you with the clean up.

I have 4 boys and a husband... talk about disgusting bathrooms!!!! <gag> I used to throw a cheerio or two in the toilet and they'd try to sink them.. it worked great! But expect the gross bathroom mess for pretty much ever! When my boys were 3 or 4... they would be going potty standing up, and then they'd turn to talk to someone (they always went with the door open when they were little) and their stream would follow them as they turned! UGH! LOL! The joy of boys. =)

I have a 3 and 4 year old boys, and I know what kinds of gross messes they can leave in the bathroom. I tell them to aim for the hole on the bottom of the potty. Some people try putting dissolvable stickers or a regular sticker on the bottom of the potty to aim at. After seeing the messes they make, I now encourage my boys to sit down. Until they can clean it up, I don't see it as necessary.

My mom said she always told my brother to sit down. He learned along the way to stand on his own because our Dad wasn't in the home.

I encourage my boys to use their own bathroom. I put a small towel on either side of the potty to catch the overspray. Often by the time I notice it, it's dried on the potty or the wall or floor. I have also tried putting my puppy's training pads beside the potty. I bought the generic ones, cut them to size, and put them on the floor. I think the generic ones were like $0.50 each. It was worth it to me because reaching behind and beside the potty to clean up pee and the smell of pee is really gross.

Let him sit down to pee if that is what he is most comfortable with. He will learn to stand up in time. If you want him to stand, try having him stand on a stool and put his hands on the back of the toilet. This way he will be bending over the toilet and he won't have to aim as hard.

I have two boys 6 & 15. both boys learned sitting on the potty, just like they would have done it on the potty chair. My older son sat until he was 4-5 and discovered that boys stand to pee. I wasn't too happy about that. Sitting is so much less mess. My younger son prefered sitting even after he found out about standing. It is only in the past 6 mos. that he prefers to stand, although he knows if he goes in the bathroom with the carpeting, he must sit down. Once when he went with me in a public women's restroom, you could hear him shout from his stall if he 'could stand' here. lol (I made sure to clean up after him, a pet peeve I have.)
So save yourself a headache, see if he will sit down for awhile. Until he can take care of it himself.
