Yes you read that right...my son swallowed a button battery Thurday night. Luckily, he told us right away and we took him to the emergency room right away after reading online how dangerous it could be. When we got the er they took him right in and took an x-ray. We could clearly see the battery and thank God, it was in his stomach and not his esophagus or lung. They discharged us telling us to "let nature take its course" but if he had not passed it in 4 days, that he would need to go back to the hospital to see if the battery got hung up anywhere. Well it is Monday now (4 days later) and no battery has been passed as of yet. Has anyone ever gone through this...any advice. If not, please take my story as a percaution. These little batteries were in a TOY CELL PHONE!!! Swallowing those little button batteries can be very dangerous. In fact I was reading online that if it gets caught up in the lung or esaphogus, it can start to burn away at the insides in less than 1 HOUR!!! Scary...

So What Happened?

Well we are going back to the doctor's today to get a script to go back to get an x-ray again to see where it is. I guess if it is not in the x-ray, it must have passed unnoticed and if it is still in there, we will find out what is next. I will keep you all posted. Thanks for your advice/support!

My daughter did that 14 years ago. At that time I was told that they rarely leak, BUT, I had to send the batteries to poison control to be examined and be sure that they did not leak. One of the 2 that she ate took almost a week to come out. They had exrayed her and both showed up on the x-ray. She is a little nutty to this day, but very bright, happy, and tallented. Hope this helps

My daughter swollowed 2 quarters when she was 2 and she passed them. It did take a few days. I would call your pediatrition and see what they say. I know that it is scary but I think all kids swollow something that they are not supposed to. I hope everything works out for you.

I would take him back to the doc for another x-ray better safe then sorry it could have passed unnoticed but I wouldnt take that chance just in case it didnt and got caught up somewhere in the digestive track they will use a endo scope to remove it for his age range they might put him to sleep so he wont move around or get scared good luck and hopefully it passed with out needing further assistance

C.,

It is entirely possible that it did pass, unnoticed. My daughter swallowed a penny, and we were also told to just let it pass. We never did see the penny, but she has not had any tell tale issues and they feel no need to do any looking around. So, we really believe it passed unnoticed. Unless you tore apart his poop each and every time, you might not see it, and it could have plopped down into the bottom of the toilet, out of site in the piping without anyone being the wiser. But, definitely put that call in.

I would say, if you haven't already contacted your pediatrician regarding this, do so today before they close. See what they want you to do.

So sorry to hear you going through this. It's so scary.

Praying for you,

My son (now 14) swallowed a penny when he was about 18 months. His body apparently didn't like it and he hurled it up almost right away. I'd have given him loads of fiberous foods if he'd not coughed it up. I'm surprised the ER didn't give him something to drink to hurry the process a bit. Take him to the pediatrician and see what they say. Chances are, he passed it without your notice.
