Son Urinates a Lot!

Hi-

I have a wonderful 8 month old baby boy who pees a lot! He is a big boy (90th% height, 70th% in weight), so he is already wearing size 4 diapers regularly. During the day he fills up a size 4 Huggies Supreme every 2 hours. At night I put him in a size 5 and by 3-4 am he has filled it up to overflowing! I didn't have this issue with my other 3 so I don't know what to do. I suppose it is a good thing that he is so well-hydrated, but it is affecting his sleep since once his diaper overflows his pajamas get wet and I have to change his clothes (doesn't overflow every day, but it happens a lot!). He goes back to sleep fine, but it sure would be nice if we didn't have this little nighttime accident every couple of days! He takes his last bottle at 5 and goes to bed at 7:30 with a fresh, dry diaper--I nurse him for MAYBE 5 minutes before he goes to sleep so he can't possibly be getting more than a couple ounces right before bedtime...not nearly what he pees out. I've tried other brands and Huggies Supremes are the only ones that don't leak for us (until they are so swollen they can't hold anymore! :-D). Any other suggestions?????

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

As is usually what happens with me, as soon as I ask a question, the problem stops! :-D I'm pretty sure he doesn't have diabetes since he doesn't have any of the other symptoms, but if we have the problem again, I'll be sure to bring it up to our ped. We haven't had any issues at all this week so it makes me wonder if he is done. I think Ileana might be on to something since it coincidently stopped happening when the weather warmed up a bit... Thanks for all the advice!

is he nicely warmed all over with his pajamas?
he could just be cold at night! i just made hubby get his own blanket. darn it i'm 42 and he kept pulling them off me and i was waking up 4 times a night. since he started using his own, i don't wake up AT ALL.
those feet pjs are the best. i wouldn't worry that there is something physically wrong with your son. i would assume:
1. he's cold
2. draft in room

p.s. it is better that he pees a lot than he doesn't do enough. that is part of how our body gets rid of toxins, so never try to do something to curb that. keep feeding him as you have been, don't compromise his growth/nutrition. i bet it's cold at night in his room and that's why it's happening. here in the desert temps drop very drastically, and since he's not doing it during the daytime...that is another sign.

Hi TD, don't forget to mention this to your pediatrician if you haven't already, just to be safe that it is not juvenile diabetes.

Now that said, with my daughter who was breastfed and also big for her age (99% for height and weight). Any time she started leaking either pee or poop I would move her up to the next size. So my first suggestion would be to try the next size up in diaper. The other thing you could do is get some vinyl training pants that are lined with absorbant cotton and put them on over the diaper for extra absorbancy. Yes, they need to be washed, but at least you are changing the bed all the time. Also, I like the Costco Kirkland brand of diapers the best.

Hope that helps! :)

You need to make an appointment with your pediatrician. Smell your son's breath, is it fruity or acidic (think Juicy Fruit gum or sweet alcohol)? Is he thirsty all the time? Has he stopped gaining weight, or even lost a little? Is he more tired lately?
Before you blame the situation on the diapers, make sure there's no medical reason for the excessive urination. Juvenile diabetes will typically present with excessive thirst, excessive urination, sweet or acidic breath, and weight loss or failure to gain weight. It's not a scary diagnosis, just one that needs to be made early to get it under control. Have the pediatrician check his blood sugar, and possibly give him a glucose tolerance test.

or, he could just pee alot.

Good luck!

My 1st thought would be to limit his intake by a certain time in the evening....maybe that would decrease the amount of fluid he would have.... Good luck!!! ;0)

What about the overnight diapers? I've never used these so not sure how well they work. Also I think Babies R Us sells inserts to put in disposables that help in that they also absorb in addition to the diaper. Good luck!

Hi,

My little guy used to have the same problem. We put his in the huggies overnight diapers that are one size bigger that he wears. They work great. They are in the purple package. I've gotten them at Target, Walmart, or Fry's. Hope this helps.

Have you asked your pediatrician why he might be urinating so much? That alones concerns me and I would definitely seek medical advice, if you haven't already. I, too, have found Huggies to be the best, but I have never had an issue with my children urinating that much at night, let alone during the day.
