Son with Sudden Tiny Bumps on Tummy and One Leg

Dear mommas,

My son developed ringworm on the inside of his knee over a month ago; we were traveling at the time, and the local clinic gave us a prescription cream to apply twice a day. We did... for three weeks, and it finally seemed to be going away. Then suddenly, last week, on that same leg he developed tiny little bumps up and down the inside of his leg, from his ankle to his groin. The morning I took him to the doctor, it had already spread to his tummy.

After his exam, she determined it was either contact dermatitis (meaning, he was having an allergic reaction to something on the skin; which is strange it wasn't on both legs or other areas) or that it was viral. She prescribed a steroid cream to apply once a day (and we kept applying the other for the ringworm).

Now it's been a week since that doctor visit: the ringworm spot is gone (finally!) but those tiny bumps have spread to his ENTIRE right leg, and now slowly onto the left. However, they no longer itch him, and they're not ever-so-slightly pink like they used to be (in fact, I have to rub my hands up and down his leg to find them to apply the meds; they're so tiny they're hard to see!)

I called the doc back today, and she says to keep up with the steroid cream and if it's not gone in a week, to go back to see her. Well... next week is Christmas and we'll be traveling. Just wondering if any of you have had experience with this before? Any advice?

Thanks so much! :)

That happened to my DD. She came over from her dads and was fine. Woke up the next moring and I thought she really sick. Red bumbs every where. I took her straight to the ER. Dr said it was viral and gave her Benedril. I gave her some more that night and the next day COMPLETELY gone. It was soooo weird.

Both of my sons are prone to eczema. When the rash is bad, its bright red and itchy. When the rash is developing or going away, its like you describe: tiny skin-colored bumps that you can feel but not see. Steroid creams and moisturizing help with eczema, so if that is it, you are doing the right thing. Hope it gets better!

I was going to suggest Benadryl (oral) as well like Mommy B.
When my daughter gets a mystery skin malfunction, usually one dose of Benadryl and it's gone. Have to give it to her only before bed since it knocks her out. Occassionally she needs two nights in a row.

I agree with Cynthia T re: eczema - my son also has skin issues and when it is beginning or going away it is the tiny little bumps you can barely see however since you just battled ringworm it could be that again or a reaction to either of the creams. We can't use soaps or lotions (even baby soap/lotion) on my son and have to use Cetaphil or Aquaphor cleanser and moisturizer. Try that for a couple days to see if it helps calm the skin then call the dr if it doesn't go away or gets worse. Good luck and Merry Christmas!
