I am due in 5 days, May 18th, and I still have not choosen a pediatrician for my child. I have been looking at our local clinics and reading doctor bio's but I am finding this decision really hard to make. How do I know which one to choose or what is most imporant? Is there anyone that lives in Apple Valley Minnesota, that can recommend a doctor your child sees and you really like?

What can I do next?

Check out Dakota Pediatrics in Lakeville. (They moved to Lakeville from Apple Valley about a year ago.) They are wonderful! When we have a 11:15 appointment, that means we are with a nurse at 11:15 and the doctor is with us within a few minutes. They are very thorough and my kids are comfortable there. They have been our pediatritians since the birth of my oldest, who is 7 1/2 and I have never been disappointed. Same day appointments are easy to get, the pediatritians & nurses are easy to talk to. They are parents, too, and are uncanny with their advise.

One example (of many)-
The baby (14 mo. old) was running a fever and refusing to eat/drink and we couldn't figure out what the problem was. After several days, and the symptoms were still present, we returned to the clinic with my 2 other children in tow. They preformed a strep test on the baby and when it was positive, they preformed the test ON THE ENTIRE FAMILY! Even my husband had the test - at the PEDIATRITIAN'S office! 4 out of 5 of us had it and they treated everyone that was sick - even my husband. (Who had to explain why he received a prescription from a pediatrician.)

I take my kids to Dr Wm. Kane at Metro Pediatrics. We go to the Edina office, but he also works in the Burnsville office. Dr. Kane is great and my kids all feel really comfortable with him. The Edina office # is ###-###-####.

Dr. Saira Mitha at Southdale Pediatrics (http://www.southdalepeds.com/)! She is absolutely fantastic. We started going to her on the recommendation of a friend when we moved from Minneapolis to Burnsville in 2005. I can't say enough wonderful things about her :)

Good luck and Congratulations on your impending arrival -- it's a wild ride, that's for sure :)

We really like Southdale Pediatrics. They've got a location in Burnsville where we see Dr. Leville. She is AMAZING! She's very knowledgeable, great with kids, patient and I never feel rushed. Their website is www.southdalepeds.com. Also, they have same day, evening and Saturday appointments. Good luck!

We see Dr. Clark at Park Nicollet Clinic in Eagan (on Galaxie just north of Apple Valley). We've always liked him and his approach with our daughter.

Hello K., I know how hard it is to find the right Doctor. I know that Dr. Kenneth Hughes is wonderful. He is at the Apple Valley Health Partners. He is a god send in my eyes and knows you and remembers you. He treats you like a real person and will make you feel comfortable and stressfree after a visit with him. Also he will give you the time you want or need and not just push you out the door.

I hope you find a Dr. that is right for your child .

Best of Luck,

T.

K.,

We go to Southdale Pediatric in Burnsville. They are large, but really, really nice and very professional. They even have an x-ray technician and allergist in the office so you don't have to go to a specialist or to the hospital. They were recommended to me by several people.

Congrats on your first baby,
S.

I have two girls, 1 & 3 and we go to Metro peds and see Dr. Durand. We really like the clinic - great hours and there is no waiting. Durand has a wonderful bedside manner, is thorough and informative. He is also of the opinion that children shouldn't be medicated unless absolutely necessary, which I agree with. He is great at giving options and helping us make informed decisions. We have seen others there as well, but we like his approach and thoroughness.

Good luck! It's not easy I know.

Sheri

I HIGHLY recommend Southdale Pediatrics in Burnsville! I like them both as a mother and as a pediatric nurse myself. They are knowledgeable, respectfull, and know how to care for both kids and their nervous parents! My daughter sees Dr. Lisa Oie but I'd recommend any of the doctors! I enjoy working with them both as a patient and as a professional (the doctors round at Children's Hosptial where I work). Start with Southdale Pediatrics, visit a few of their doctors, and pick which one fits you best. You don't have to pick one doctor right away. They work closley with one another so if you decide to go to one for one appointment, then another for another appointment until you find one that click, that's fine!

Our advice from the doctor in the family was that as long as the baby has no special issues we should see any pediatrician. I really liked the doctor that saw our baby in the hospital, she was from an Aspen clinic in maplewood i think. The first visit we had at 10 days was with someone from Children's and it was really stressful. We were not happy at all and planned to go elsewhere, but gave it one more shot (due to the kind of chaos having a newborn at home brings we went to children's again) We have been seeing Tina Park there ever since. I really like the way she talks to me. One mommy to another. She holds my baby girl like she is her own and is very smart, sweet and encouraging. She has given me wonderful advice! My child is perfectly healthy (thank you god!) and I am now very happy with the care I receive at the clinic at Children's hospital in St. Paul. We have not needed anything other than well baby visits. Don't know about sick baby yet. Maybe that is another plus in their column. My child hasnt been sick. Good luck to you. Your whole universe is about to change!

As already mentioned, Southdales Peds is terrific! I live in AV as well and their office is less than 10 minutes away. The doctors are great, the nurse line is great and very patient and helpful when you are calling every 30 minutes because your child has a fever and you don't know what to do. The best thing about their office is that they have sick hours too and they are evenings and Saturday mornings, great for working parents. Also nice to know that only sick kids will be there so if you are just going for a wellness visit, they won't schedule it then so you avoid the most germs. They also have a great fish tank/aquarium with fish and turtles in it and the kids just love it.
