My parents will be celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary and I am looking for some ideas on what type of gift to give them. I want to do something creative but just a note they live out of state. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

What can I do next?

I love the digital photo frame idea. We however took a picture we found of our parents from their wedding day, and placed it in special frame from Things Remembered, with a current day picture of them all dolled up placed directly next to it. My mom and dad loved this and my mom proudly displays it close to her as my dad passed a couple years ago. It helps her to remember two very special occasions in her marriage with my dad.

What about a digital picture frame that you preload with photos of their family (photos from the last 40 years would be good too, if you have access to some of the older ones).

A gift certificate for a really nice photograph. Find out who is good in the area and send one along. This will commerate their special day, and 40 years.

I would suggest a gift certificate to the fanciest restaurant in their area (including enough for pre-dinner drinks and wine if they drink). I did this for my parent's 50th (along with an overnite) at one of the top Inn's in the country (Inn in Little Washington). They thought it was fantastic and something they never would have done on their own. The restaurant also had personalized menus for them.

I ditto both previous responders.

Last Christmas I gave my mom and stepdad one of the digital picture frames loaded with pics I have and it still had plenty of room for them up upload what they wanted onto it.

Secondly, my mom and stepdad rarely go out to eat. It is something we do all the time here so I find it hard when I go visit, etc to not be dining out.

SO.....I gave them a generous certificate (including enough for a nice bottle of wine) for the nicest place in the town where they live. They enjoyed that as well.

J., Do your parents like to travel? Could you afford to pay for them to fly to your home for a visit, say sometime between Thanksgiving and Christmas? Of if you already plan to see them for Christmas, maybe during Spring break '09? If so, they'd probably love to come spend some time with their grandkids. Just an idea. Best luck to you! God bless! S. P.S. The traditional gift for a fortieth anniversary is something in ruby - while I can think of a million things a woman would enjoy with rubies in it, not much comes to mind for a man. Hmmm...
