My youngest daughter did that for awhile. I had warned her that it is rude and she will get a time out if she did it again to her brother or sister, which is who she would only spit at when she was mad at them. But that did not work, so I told her that if she did it one more time I would wash her mouth out with soap. So of coarse she spit at her brother so I had to do as I said. I always follow through with what I say to my kids. I took a little drop of liquid soap on my finger and put it in her mouth just enough to give her a bad taste in her mouth. I know this sounds really drastic, but after a couple of times she stopped doing it. I would try other punichments first before I did this. I would also talk to the childs mom to see what she does to try and stop it.

Good Luck to your co-worker.

Years ago when my oldest son was doing this I would sit him down with a wastebasket and tell him to spit in it until he had filled it up. He was older than two so I don't know if it would work with one so young. You can always give it a try.

Yikes!
I never had one of my children do this.. nor anyone I know personally. I have to assume that the parents have disciplined for this? Or did they laugh when it first happened? (That is a HUGE encouragement to poor behavior). Personally, I would speak to the MOM (your friend that is the "step" is a step MOM, correct?) and see what she is doing about it. Then work out a plan together that is enforced at both homes.
That is a HUGE disrespect and the child needs to understand in no uncertain terms that it is NOT acceptable. Once the "information" has been imparted to the child, the next occurrence would earn a spanking at my house. That is not just disobedience, but defiant disrespect. Many things can be corrected in a less stern manner. But blatant disrespect is a serious offense. Nip it now. I wish your friend well.

I have a 16 month old that is doing the same thing. We've started using a spray bottle to squirt him with water in the face when he spits. It seems to be working.

there's positive and negative reinforcement...This behavior is unacceptable; but reinforcing it in the negative only fuels the fire, to the entertainment of the child only.
Reinforcing acceptable behavior with praise and "rewards", be it a sticker or small treat, will shift his thinking to one that he enjoys the positive.
Am I making sense?
Absolutely tell the boy a firm "no spitting" and then move on to a positive activity that he can feel good about, like building a building with blocks, coloring on a big poster board, lining up toy cars...there are so many other activities...and he'll eventually forget the unacceptable behavior.

My son is 3, and he used to do this. Whenever he was mad or frustrated he would spit.

After having timeouts, and them enforcing 'no spitting' at daycare the bad habit went away on its own.

Just tell your friend to be consistent, a time out should be enough to dissuade the behavior. If not, I actually like the soap in the mouth idea the PP mentioned...only after all other methods are exhausted though.
