I have a 12 week old little boy. He was born 6 weeks early and had a feeding tube thru his nose for 16 days. Since he was born he only spits up thru his nose. I have asked his doctor 3 times and they always tell me it's "normal". I also have a 9 year old son and he never had this problem so, I am having a hard time accepting that it is "normal". Also, when he is breathing and eating he is VERY noisey. I am just courious if anyone else has had this issue and how it was treated. My next step is to call an ENT specialist. Thanks in advance for you advice.
WELL, Here is my update....
Thanks to everyone for all the advise! Brody had a normal check up appt today. I expressed all my "concerns" about the spitting up and fussiness. He examined his nose and throat to find everything "normal". However, he did agree with the possibility of Reflux so, he gave me a prescription for something to help. Also, he gave me a sample of Similac A.R it has a rice starch in it to hopefully keep it on his stomach longer. I will let everyone know how the next few days go. Again, thanks for your help with this matter.
My daughter spit up through her nose for the first 3 months. The dr told me to let her sleep in her carset. It eventually just stopped.

Good idea to call ENT specialist and make an appointment and see what ENT do with ypur baby's nose and throat, avoid become health problem issues in future like sleep aperna. breath problem not clear airway (it cause very noisey),reflux, etc... remember a regular doctor only know general but not speicalize on nose and throat. Best way, go ahead to call ENT and find out what ENT offer to do with your baby's health issues.

I too would make an appointment to see an ENT doctor. My son was also a noisey breather, mouth open or closed. It turned out that he had acid reflux. With that under control he still was noisey...alas enlarged tonsils. It never hurts to get a second opinion. Good luck.
You have what my pediatrician calls a "talanted baby"! My first born never did that but my 22 month old did. It was disturbing to say the least until we learned to laugh about it and eventually he grew out of it. And yours will too, once the digestive system matures he'll be fine. Unless he is in distress or has labored breathing he is ok. My youngest would grunt and groan and make all kinds of noises for a while until his little digestive system matured and he eats like a horse today thankfully with no grunting. And he also used to not be able to tolerate side-lying while nursing, he'd "inhale" the milk. About5-6 mos old he preferred side-lying and grew out of the milk through the shnoz :)
He may have acid reflux. My son was diagnosed with severe acid reflux at 11 weeks old. He spit up through his nose but also choked. He was put on a small dose of Prevacid by his pediatric GI specialist, not to stop the reflux but to protect his throat. "Noisy" eating is also a sign. It's worth checking into. If it turns out to be reflux I reccommend the book Colic Calm. ("Colic" is the sarcasm in the title, b/c the author believes that for decades drs were unaware of reflux and just diagnosed all unknown issues as the phantom colic) Trust your instincts. Good luck.

my child doesn't have this problem, but does have the breathing/eating issues. he has asthma, reflux, and trachial malasia. maybe try a pediatric polmonologist. good luck
newborns normally breathe thru their noses......it should get better as he gets older. I would wait a few weeks and mention it to the doc again if it persists. My son was a preemie too, also fed thru a tube, but I don't remember him doing this.
I agree with the others. Get a second opinion. An ENT is a really good idea. It can't hurt and at the very least if it's nothing, you'll have a bit more peace of mind.
follow your heart and get him to an other doctor.
we as humans wait to long to check thing out.

spitting up through the nose CAN be normal. the problem would be if he's in PAIN when it happens and/or before/after it happens.

My daughter was 4 weeks early and had the same problem. The doctor diagnosed her with reflux and she has been on Zantec ever since. We tried other things first like, elevating after eating, burping often during feeding, etc. because I didn't want to medicate right away. She is 10 months old and still has the reflux, but it no longer comes out the nose.
It wouldn't hurt to take him to an ENT. Good luck.
I'm not a medical doctor, so I can't give medical advice. However, my sister was born with a cleft palate and she actually did the same thing that you described until her cleft was repaired. Definitely see an ENT...you may even want to see a craniofacial team. There is a great one at Shand's in Gainesville, FL.
