☼.S.
I have a second grader and not yet, phew! I still remember always being paired up with this boy named Scott. He had the driest hands (palms) I've ever come across still to this day.
Do they still torture grade school kids with this?
Yeah, pretty much that was my memories, gross boys, I swear they made themselves extra gross for the event. My older two had to do it two but I don't think the younger two did.
M, the older two went Catholic all the way. I was shocked when Tommy came home complaining of the clean girls! :p
Molly!! Why didn't our parents do that?? It just proves they didn't really love us.

YES they do! We have what is called a "barn dance". Before the dance, the kids are taught some "barn" dances.
Not in my neck of the woods.
Here we have the Hula.
Margaret says no, they did classical dancing, Tango, Salsa, Ballroom, Samba, and the like.
BOW TO YOUR PARTNER! CURTSY TO YOUR NEIGHBOR! NOW DOE-SEE-DOE!
Ah-hahaha!
I always got suck with the creepiest boys, too.
:)
I remember having to learn to square dance in fourth grade, as part of the California state history curriculum.
Not fun. Boys still had cooties.
And, unfortunately, memories like that seem to color many people's attitude towards square dancing for the rest of their lives. But from having taken a square dance class when I was in my 30s, I can tell you that what is taught in grade school bears little resemblance to the reality. I understand that they don't have a lot of time to devote to it, but it's a watered-down, boring version >.<
I met my husband of 28 years in my class, and I'd still be dancing now if my knees and back would cooperate. It's pretty good exercise, I've had sooooo much fun, and I've met a lot of really nice people over the years!
4th grade report: nothing yet.
But I SO remember having SD in public grade school!
My son now says 'no' but I could have sworn he told me they did a week of it for PE in the 4th grade.
Although I didn't like the boys at the time, I enjoyed square dancing.
Swing your partner, allemande left, doh-see-doe and promenade home!
I'd forgotten about square dancing.
When/if I ever get some free time I think I'll look up a local group and see about joining up.
I took ballet, jazz and tap growing up.
I like watching clogging but I don't think I've got the stamina for anything like that right now.
Square dancing would be great (but I refuse to wear a poofy crinoline)!
I also like watching Morris dancing - I just love all those bells on their knees!
I like folk dancing!
OH, bummer, I was hoping you were joining a dance group that go's camping together and I'd join you...
In our school district, it is called Social Dancing, and my son has learned the Salsa, the Tango, The Waltz, Hip Hop, and yes, some square dancing. They had to choreograph their own dance as a test. He loved it and has now partnered with a fantastic girl and will be doing competitive dancing. His first competition is this month. Which reminds me, I need a black vest for him.
i never heard of such a thing. i went to catholic school though does that matter?
I was tortured with that in 5th grade. My teacher would wear these dresses pretty much every day. Instead of being stuck with a yucky boy, I picked my partner - one that was 'the nerd' because I didn't want him to feel left out - didn't help that his name was Phil Collins. He is probably a co-owner of Microsoft or Apple or something now.
Ugh...I always got partnered with the sweatiest, smelliest, grossest, boogariest boy. Blech. I still cringe when I think about it.
My oldest did not do it in middle school. I was never allowed to do it cause it was dancing. My mom always wrote a note for me to not participate.
LOL yes they do it here. It's part of "California history/pioneer days" in 4th grade.
My kids complained about it, but they always had a slight smile and a gleam in their eyes when they did.
Just like I did at that age.
I guess I liked the "gross" boys, though I don't remember them that way :)
I took it in college for PE credit and it was fun! But we never wore the outfits and the guys were horribly (well, depending on the POV) outnumbered.
OMG square dancing!! Well, ladies, I'll have you know that it's not just in THIS country that gym teachers use square dancing to torture kids. I spent my childhood in Japan, where, yep, they had us square dancing in 4th and 5th grade. It WAS an international school and I guess "America" had to be represented somehow during the dancing segment. Most of us didn't even understand what it was. Waltz? Sure. Tango? Si! Square Dancing? HUH?
I'll have to ask my kids if they've doh-si-dohed recently...
I used to cry when I had to square dance with the kid that brought a bag of snot to show and tell.
So far so good with my kid, and if it does happen, I will write her a note to get her out of it.
