How did you start introducing cereal and other food to your babys diet? How much? at what time? I have a 4 yr old, but I completely forgot how to I did it with him. My daughter is 5 months old and completely ready for cereal and other foods. She's on formula and eats 6 oz about every 3-4 hours. Do I feed her cereal in between the first 2 feedings then eventually just give her the cereal in the morning? Thanks in advance!

**Do you give her a bottle as well as the cereal?

What can I do next?

At 5 months I started giving my daughter one or two tablespoons of rice cereral with warm water at breakfast time and dinner time. after a week or so i started introducing pureed fruits and veggies with the cereral. after a another week or so i started feeding her cereal and one to two tablespoons of fruit at breakfast; cereal and one or two tablespoons of veggies at lunch, and cereal and two tablespoons of fruit and veggie for dinner.
She always gets nursed first as the bulk of her nutrition at this age still comes from breastmilk/formula.

typical feeding schedule:
6:30 am- nurse
8:30 am- cereal and fruit and water in a sippy cup
11 am- nurse
12:30pm- cereal and veggie and water in a sippy cup
3pm- nurse
4:30- snack- rice crackers, nurse (depends on afternoon naping)
6pm- cereal fruit and veggies and water in a sippy cup
715pm- nurse

hope that this helps.

I always used whole grain (rice) cereal which has the fiber in it. It was in the health food section & start with a little added to the formula. Just go with how interested she is in it. There's no hurry. Babycenter recommends to begin with about 1 teaspoon dry rice cereal mixed with 4 to 5 teaspoons breast milk or formula (it'll be very runny).

Also, sucking and eating use completely opposite tongue motions so that's why the food often is spit back out. Unless she looks unhappy, put it back in and keep letting her learn the muscle control.

After my babe got used to more foods, I used to mix morning breakfast of cereal, applesauce, probiotic yogurt and milk (of your choice) for a very healthy start to the day.

You can start her cereal now as my peditrician told me to start introducing solid foods at 4 months of age.I have started with baby food & she love to eat it, one kind of food at a time so that you can easily notice if she is having no problem to digest any kind .Then I started rice cereal with her ( any single grain cereal) again slowly with 2 teaspoons at a time. You can always begin with 1 meal 1 day then 2 meals ,depending upon your daughters way of eating.

Good Luck

I started my son with his "dinner" feeding. Then added "breakfast" and "lunch". As we added food items, I stopped weaned from the cereal at dinner and then from lunch. My son liked the cereal really thick. My daughter liked it thinner (she's funny about texture). You have to take your lead from the child on this one.

My kids started cereal at 4 months and 1st baby foods at 5 months. Just make the cereal very soupy at first until she gets used to eating it off a spoon and till you know she handles it ok. then gradually thiken it. I started it for lunch and as they got used to it i did the 3 meals a day. Now my baby is almost 8 months and on the 3rd foods and some table food and eats breakfast lunch and dinner along with bottles and water in a sippy cup. Just start slow and gradually increase to what your baby is ready for.

Hi B.:

I say give her a reduced portion of formula and a small amount of cereal at each meal. Everyday, slightly reduce formula and slightly increase cereal. So she will be having both at meal time.

All the best,
