My husband and I are thinking of having another baby. We have one 11y/o boy, and this is the right time for us financially, and emotionally. I am 32 years old, and am overweight. Besides taking prenatal vitamins, and maybe loosing a some weight, what else can I do to prepare. The Obgyn I see for all my female health, said If I can loose a little that would be great, but it shouldn't hold me back from trying to concieve. Does anyone have any good advice? Thank you

What can I do next?

I DON'T HAVE A PROBLEM CONCEIVING, MY PROBLEM IS MISCARRIAGES BUT I FOUND THAT IF YOU TAKE SOME KIND OF VITAMINS IT WILL CERTAINLY HELP YOU CARRY TO TERM. YOU CAN TAKE EITHER PRENATAL VITAMINS TO HELP YOU TO CONCEIVE OR REGULAR CENTRUM VITAMINS. I TOOK CENTRUM FOR TWO MONTHS BEFORE I GOT PREGNANT WITH MY SON. MY DOCTOR TOLD ME THAT THAT IS WHY I WAS ABLE TO CARRY HIM FULL TERM. I KNEW I WAS PREGNANT WITHIN THE FIRST COUPLE OF WEEKS, SO I IMMEDIATELY STARTED TAKING PRENATAL VITAMINS. YOU DON'T HAVE TO GET THE EXPENSIVE KIND EITHER, YOU CAN GET THE CHEAPER VERSION FROM EITHER WAL-MART OR KROGER FOR PROBABLY HALF THE PRICE OF THE PRESCRIPTION KIND.

I WISH YOU THE BEST OF LUCK.

Before you get pregnant is the time to take care of all the things you can't do while you are pregnant. See the dentist and get X-rays. If you need fillings, crowns, root canals, now is the time. Make sure that you are immune to rubella. (Dr. can test for this.) You can't get a vaccine while you are pregnant and if you catch it while pregnant, the baby can have birth defects. (I had a friend who had to wear a surgical mask in public her whole pregnancy because she didn't know that her vaccine as a child didn't take until after she was pregnant.) Get a flu shot now (check with Dr. first)because you shouldn't have one during your first trimester, which could be during flu season if you get pregnant soon.

Now is the best time to do fun, non-medical things, too. I am 11 weeks pregnant and have paint for my daughter's room sitting in the garage because I found out I was pregnant right after I bought the paint. She just has to wait for her new room for a while longer until the Dr. says I can paint. If you love horseback riding, cliff jumping, roller coasters, ice skating, scuba diving, traveling to countries that require shots or anything else you can't do while you're pregnant, scratch the itch now because it will be a while before you can do it again. (My husband and I always take a 2nd honeymoon in between babies.)

Best of luck,
S.

I would not worry so much about the weight. I was still trying to loose the weight I gain from my son when I found out I was prego with my daughter. I acctually lost 10 lbs. at the begining of my pregnancy. The OBGYN was not worried about the loss because I was over weight. My sis had the same thing happen to her. Congrats on deciding to have another baby. Hope all goes well. As long as you are healthy I would not worry too much about the weight.

Hi K.,

Well congrats! I wish my husband was into having another baby! You should consider yourself lucky! Well, I'm not to sure that if I were you i wouldn't be worried about being a bit overweight. I would however go to swimming classes or arobics about 1 or 2 a week. I would also start doing more kegal exersices. Umm.... and of course start shopping and or getting everything ready for the baby!! I'm so excited, and i'm not the one pregnant. So i wouldn't get to worried about what else you could do... that would just stress you out.

Well, K. as a person who started all over, I can tell you that it is not something that you take too lightly. It is something you have to seriously think about because you are starting the whole thing all over. Sometime I wonder what I was thinking about. However, when I look at this wonderful little person, I know I would not have it any other way. My daughter is 11 and my son is now 1. Therefore, they are ten years apart. I am sometime taking aback by all the little things he does. I forget about those days. I reminds me. You will have your little bundle between 11 and twelve years apart depending on when you conceive. I did lose plenty of weight before I became pregnant. I had been wanting another baby for a long time. But as time went by, I realized that I was not getting any younger and the time may never be the perfect time. Therefore, I lost over 20lbs by eating right and exercising. I ate plenty of greens and drank plenty of water and exercised alot, including light weight lifting. (Slim and 6 is perfect for losing the weight by the way). I took real good care of me. I incorporated exercise into my day in everything I did when I knew I could not take 30 minutes or so to do a full exercise routine. I parked far, I took the stairs instead of the elevator and I walked. I went from a size 12-14 to a size 4-6. I had a little problem conceiving. But when it happened, we were estatic. I was happy that I did lose that weight because after I had the baby I could only think about how much bigger I would have been if I did not lose it. I was a small during my entire pregancy as a result. However, I gained some of the weight back after I had the baby because I was so consumed with taking care of him. I am not as small, but I am glad I took care of me so I can have him.

If you want that baby, take the time to read everything you can on losing weight and eating healthy and exercising. You will be happy you did. By the way, I was 37 years old with other health problems when I conceived and had my baby. Therefore, if you are only 32, healthy and all you have to do is lose a little weight, you have nothing to worry about. Everything will be fine. Hope that helped.

P.S. Take supplemental vitamins when exercising, eating right and losing weight. That is very important to keep your metab going.

Congrats K.!! : ) What a wonderful choice we have in our lives to have children! I am SO excited for you!!!
I just want to tell you that it seems like you can never really be "prepared" for a new baby. Things are all so different for everyone, that it is just too hard to figure it all out before hand........what I would say is, someone gave you some awesome advice to exercise!!! You will be amazed that this pregnancy will make you tired, and if you start now, then you can keep your energy up with walks and staying active! (Plus, it will help you get the weight down). I really feel strongly that Weight Watchers is an awesome organization, and if you really want to concentrate on losing that weight before you get pregnant, they can give you some great tips! : ) I learned so much about food and eating habits that I never even thought of!
Good luck and God Bless you and your family!! : )
