Still Losing My Hair

Hello
I know when you are pregnant the prenatal vits help to thicken your hair, make your nails stronger and so on, and then after you have the baby your hair eventually starts falling out (which I'm fine with btw) anyways my youngest child will be 4 in October, and I'm still losing my hair ACK! as long as I can wash my hair every 2-3 days or so it still comes out, but it's not quite as noticeable, but if it goes any longer than that then I can easily run my hand thru my hair and have a ton of strands come out...

my question is, why is it still coming out this long after I've had my baby, and is there anything I can do or take vitamin wise etc. that will help stop this from happening? I have a thick head of hair anyways so I know I'm not actually going bald, lol but it's just so frustrating to constantly have to clean up hair off the floor...

So What Happened?

Thanks to those who have responded :) I really do appreciate it! I see the repeating message of "see your doctor", and even tho I don't have a family doctor, I'll have to find a way to get to one etc. and I will certainly have them look into my Thyroid. If it is messed up, perhaps it'll help in some other problem areas I've been having (mood swings etc.) Thanks again ladies :)

I have absolutely no idea why it is happening, but if it makes you feel any better it is happening to me too. I can pull out 20+ strands at a time on bad days. I have 3 kids ages 11, 6 & 4 and it hasn't stopped falling out yet for me either.

It could just be natural "shedding". My hair stylist said it is very normal for people to lose hair daily. I shed quite a bit and also have medium to thick hair, which is how it ended up being a complaint I addressed to her. I know it's gross, though, for the hair to be everywhere, and more noticeable for those of us with thick or long hair. I have a hair trapper for the bath drain, and that helps. I saw the below advice to try some shampoo product. Don't know how it helps, but if it's very frustrating, it's worth a try. Heck, try Ebay or Sally's Beauty Supply, and they may have the same thing far cheaper. Good luck! :)

Have you had your hormones checked to be sure that all are inbalance? You could increase your B Complex that sometimes hwelps or some supplements which have helped others are at www.mannapages.com/SDavis. If this is what you do be sure to include
Immunostart.

Hi L....Have you checked with your doctor? Unusual hair loss is a symptom of a sluggish thyroid among other things. Talk with her about it and see what the doc says! A.

Hi L.,
I don't know why you are losing hair. I am 61 and have had 7 children and don't remember having any hair loss. I will admit that there were a few occasions down through the years when I thought I would pull mine all out but that's another story. I had gastric bypass surgery 18 months ago and have had some hair loss since then. My nutritionist said it is from some nutrient deficiencies and said to take Biotin. I hope that you find an answer to your hair loss problem and I hope that I have been some help.
God bless you and your famly,
Connie

L., I know exactly what you are talking about. I am 49 yars of age and since the birth of my second son born in 1994, I've used everything and taken many advises from professioinals and anyone who was interested in helping me.
Lo and behold, I wallked into JC Penneys for some shampoo and found myself asking once again what I am recommended to use.
I was told to use "NIOXIN" Cleanser and Scalp Therapy. I was a bit hesitant because not only was it expensive but also because I didn't want to throw away more shampoo. Well, A-M-E-N!!!!!! IT WORKED! And it continues to work. My wonderful long thick hair is returning to its natural state every time I use it. I recommend it wholeheartily. Try it and let me know how it went. You can also purchase NIOXIN at a Walmart Salon-it was cheaper for me to purchase.
Hope I helped.

I would recommend taking vitamins and make sure you are using good shampoo not suave or pantene!!! I saw someone recommended Nioxin excellent product but rule out other possibilities first! Also you may want to go to the Dr and get a check up sometimes hair loss can be do to a thyroid problem also stress will make you lose your hair!!! Another question is your hair longer than it used to be that makes hair loss on the floor the brush etc... more noticeable!! Also ask your stylist what he or she thinks if the loss is more than normal, and using a good boar bristle brush to stimulate the scalp may also help!! Hope this helps I know I was losing lots of hair and it was my thyroid medication, I am a stylist myself and know lots of things can reak havoc with your hair lucky you have lots LOL!!!

The one and only thing that has ever helped me keep my hair and grow some new is a vitamin called Biotin. Cheapest place to buy it is Target of all places. Less than 3 dollars and I have more hair than I have in my life and I am taking a prescription that makes me loose my hair!

I take a multi-vitamin that also has Biotin in it but from the research I have done having the higher dose is just fine because you can actually get Biotin in a higher dose from other manufacturers.

This is like that old saying," kids will make you crazy and pull your hair out". I know how you feel. I am 21, my son is 2 and I also have alot of hair so I dont miss it, but I do wonder if its going to stop comming out in clumps. Its sometimes seems like I might be balding. I know the feeling, but I have not a clue as to why its happening, maybe my 2 year old is pulling it out. lol.

PLEASE get your thyroid checked out. This is a typical symptom of thyroid problems, both hyper and hypo. Both are NOT something you want to have go on any longer than necessary. Do this before trying ANY home remedies, new shampoos or anything else. Your thyroid is extremely important in regulating MANY things in your system and can affect other areas of your health if allowed to go too long unbalanced.

I speak from experience as I have had problems with both types of thyroid problems, hyper and hypo, and am continuing to battle this problem. It is something you may have to deal with for the rest of your life, but it is treatable.

It could be hormonal. I just had 2 kids back to back and now I am having thyroid issues :( If you haven't had blood work lately (since the births) I would get that done just to make sure. Pregnancy can cause your thyroid to get all outta wack and it is an important part of everything in your body so chck to be sure! I thought my hair loss was due to the Mirena I had put in recently but its not. Postpartum thyroidism

Hi L.,
I know I've heard about thinning of hair, etc. after having kids but I can't say I've EVER heard about it happening for YEARS after childbirth. My first thought is that your hair falling out is completely separate from having kids. I would talk to a dermatologist or your family doctor, etc. about it. Has your diet changed since you had kids, are you eating all of the right nutrients, etc.? I have heard hair loss caused by stress and lack of appropriate nutrition for moms but after almost 4 years it just doesn't seem explainable as "post-pregnancy" hair loss anymore. I hope someone has some good ideas for you but I think at this point, I'd see my doctor to see if there may be another cause.
Good luck!

I would speak to your Dr about it. Many things can cause hair loss, various hormonal issues, chemical depression, and i'm sure other problems too. Probably good to rule that out. It may not be related to birth, since its so far out. Or it cold be genetic. Some of the women in my family have thin hair.
